#46 Mowing and building up the barn windows - Renovating a farm in Italy

It's the first week of our second year on the farm! This week we're clearing another piece of land, building back up the window sills in the barn, and enjoying the bounty of the land.
We're Isis & Bertus, a belgian-dutch couple. In the summer of 2023 we moved into a neglected farmhouse in a tiny village in the northwest of Italy. The last inhabitants left some 15 years ago, but large parts of the property have been empty for well over 20 years.
Thank you for joining us on our adventure!

I agree re their style of filming and not needing to "entertain" us with constant comments, etc. Find it very relaxing. Appreciate their "team" work on both of them working side by side and both sweating to get the jobs done on the property.

Every time I watch a film I feel like it only lasted a few minutes, it's so great to see the mountains, the meadows, the flowers, the insects, there's always an unsatisfied feeling. The windows in the workshop will be a great plus, when cold days come it is difficult to work longer in the cold, and the windows always stop the cold coming in. Double glazing in the house will certainly make a big difference and it is very good that the frames can be retained and for aesthetic and financial reasons. Velluto is so beautiful, those wonderful eyes and how calmly he takes them from Bertus' hand. My warmest greetings to you, have a great week and look forward to seeing you again.🐈‍⬛🍀

I love your videos. Honestly I’m pretty jealous of you guys. BUTttttt. I’m a concrete guy. Tons of experience with wet and dry concrete materials. Please look into silicosis poisoning. It comes from breathing in the particulates of silica or concrete dust. Maybe a mask would be helpful when cleaning or breaking any mortar, grout or concrete.

The ecosystem at your Italian farm is truly a pleasure for those of us living in suburbia. The views, the meadows, the flowers, the fruit, the LIFE buzzing and chirping and whirring...and Velluto of course for a bit of WILD. Those windows will be welcome when cool then cold weather returns. Excellent work in readying the window openings. I love watching the building emerge from the brambles and weeds and to see the trees in all their glory--still leaving habitat for all the creatures humans NEED for our survival. Thank you so much.

First of all, thanks for the beautiful videos! The direction, the script and the lighting are perfect in each of the episodes! I wanted to draw your attention to the fact that, as an immigrant myself for only two years in Italy, I found that the translation using artificial intelligence tools from English to Italian is more accurate and accurate, according to the feedback I received. I have been a devout watcher of yours since the first episode and you are an inspiration of manual labor, care for the material and care for the past. As someone whose areas of interest sent him to study At the university history and philological research of texts I appreciate your work very much! Grazie mille per tutto!!!

You bring such a sense of order and the peace that comes with it. You found chaos and mess; already intelligence and logic are imposed upon your sphere! My late mother-and her mother-and her mother-would have so much enjoyed these videos. My mother was half Scotch-Irish, half German. Her female ancestors were all German. I have more Scotch-Irish and German on my father’s side. Somehow I’m the messy one, but I was taught better. My challenge is going through all the stuff that I inherited and curating it down into what fits in our townhome! Watching you deal with a much bigger mess systematically gives me inspiration and hope that little upon little ultimately accomplishes much. Thank you!

Great job. I was going to suggest tapping along your score line and then I saw you doing it. It really helps along a long cut. FYI There is also glass cutting plyers that apply pressure to both sides of the score line. On long cuts you go gently apply pressure from one end to the other.

Hi Isis and Bertus, love watching your vlog. I used make headlights and can offer you some advice on cutting glass. The old cutters may not be blunt, (they don't feel sharp) When we use ours we have a cotton wool swab with oil (sewing machine) and dip the wheel into it before making a cut. When you make the cut, even but light pressure, the glass should make a ssssssss. don't recut over the top or gouge the glass by pressing too hard.. When you mark the glass with your cutter you are breaking the surface tension of the glass-its a liquid1 Tap with the end of your cutter at the beginning of your cut, you should see a "crack" form along your cut, then with your fingers either side of the cutting mark snap down and apart. using the bench isn't a bad idea. When you are sanding the glass beware the dust is not good. keep up the good work, I just love the stone buildings. regards Pam Australia

@@storiesfromthecascina also you do not need to use your hands to break the glass, the rectangular holes at the sides of glass cuters are exactly for that. You slide it to the side of the glass and use the lenght of the glass cutter as a lever (thats how my grandpa did it).

We have similar 60’s windows. Using 4+6+(2+2) glazing, the window rebate doesn’t have to be deepened- glazing is retained by a timber strip that is “planted” onto existing frame. Glazing units are quite heavy, so I was keen to avoid any reduction to existing frame. Complete paint removal, by chemical dipping is available in Costigliole di Asti, our first windows due back next week! Message if you want details.
@andrewsargeant6225
@andrewsargeant6225 5 күн бұрын
If the double glazing unit protrudes beyond the external face of the wooden window (with no routing of the frame) glazing is held in place with a stepped external cover strip. 10mm x 30mm with a 4-5mm deep rebate about 15mm wide. This appears to be a widely used solution around Asti (AT) Good luck if you opt for a routing solution, the window is not wide enough to reliably support a plunge router. Original frames appear to be from a resinous pine, mass produced (see steel X dowels in corners), structure appears ok but when checked, frames are not square. Original glazing held in place with pinned quadrant but its external, lower section of the frame is generally degraded because there is no putty or sealant around the old glass. Its a design fault, when it rains, water goes behind the quadrant and is trapped on the top surface of the lower frame . New glazing is fully sealed into old frame, effectively it becomes part of the frame structure 🤞🤞
