Not only that but the FBI discovered that if a bullet move's over 2,200 feet per second it will cost a permanent wound cavity about 6 inches in diameter that will exceed the tissue expansions tolerance of the Human body in other word this revolver approaches rifle capability which exceeds even the 500 Smith & Wesson Magnum the fastest 500 S&W is the Hornady 300 grain at 2075 per second will not reach the magic number of 2200 foot per second !! This revolver is truly amazing .

I love shooting my 460 mag but I think my wife loves it more. My 13 year old daughter has worked up from running 45LC through it to the 454 Casulls. She's not quite ready for the big 460 mag rounds yet. Recently started reloading as the girls run a boat load of ammo through this thing. Shooting at an indoor range is a blast. You are literally the loudest gun on the range and people stop what they are doing. Shooters to your sides will stop as they are scared of the gap blast the big boy puts out. I'll let people shoot it, most turn down the offer, others will fire one round, put it back on the bench and walk away with a big grin.

I own the S&W 500 and the owners manual says you are supposed to use the muzzle break/compensator with the vents on top for jacketed rounds. And use the muzzle break with no ports on top for lead rounds. Supposedly the lead rounds could produce some shrapnel out the top ports.

I have to admit that I really enjoyed shooting a .500 S&W, and thought it was just about the perfect hand-cannon. Then I got to see the .460 and changed my mind. It immediately became my favorite. The power is mind-blowing, but its ability to shoot five different bullets made the change of favorites easy. What a magnificent beast it is!

I own both the .460 and .500 Magnums. Both revolvers are 8 3/8" and identical except for the chambering. After shooting and hunting with both if I could only have one hands down it would be the .460 Magnum. The versatility with being able to fire different ammo is impressive. The .460 also has gain twist rifling which helps with accuracy. There is nothing the .460 cannot kill vs. the .500 Magnum. Owning a revolver that can fire a 300+ grain bullets at .30 caliber rifle ballistics is impressive. If you are in the market for a hunting handgun I would highly recommend the .460 Magnum. I added a Leupold handgun scope along with four Weigand scope mounts. Rock solid shot after shot. The Smith & Wesson front carry holster is also a nice touch.

If you can stomach the $1.25+ for every shot, its worth it! I have the 14 inch model from the performance center and I dont need any other gun. I only bought it earlier this summer so I only have about 120 shots through it, but it just puts the bullet where you point it. Took it to my grandfathers range and hit both the 100 yard and 150 yard with iron sights (with the bipod that is included with the 14 inch model). Not to mention the flexibility of firing .45LC and other shorter rounds when all your friends gather for a range day but you dont want to drop $100+ for all day fun. As hickok45 said, it does gunk up the cylender when you use shorter rounds though.

This would be phenomenal for bear defense. I like the fact you can load a variety of ammunition using the long colt for target practice and possibly home defense. Use the Casul rounds for whitetails and use the full house 460 rounds for bear defense and big game. I am going out west next year, I'm definitely looking into one of these.

Not really an accurate contrast: the S&W X-Frame twins have different purposes, and they are each "the most..." in their own lanes, speed for one and power for the other. I don't know of any other .50/0 revolver-based rounds, but the .500 isn't about versatility-of-caliber, the two are a trade-off. You wouldn't dismiss a hammer because it isn't a saw.

*Many* thanks indeed for having one of these beautiful guns on your show Hickok!!! I have wanted to see you put an XVR through its paces for the last five years. I think it is the very best of all the heavy pistols--superior even to those that shoot the 500SW Magnum in my opinion and _miles_ ahead of the various Desert Eagles despite their hype. You mention how practical it is, yet also how special with the super-fast rounds and also the tamer cartridges. Just as you suggest, I would perhaps like to get my little wife--she stands an inch under five feet--interested in the lighter rounds while still being able to appreciate the really heavy stuff myself. A fantastic pistol and a really, _really_ enjoyable video.

I did get this (The hunter edition with the rail) over all other big bore handguns. I can shoot 45LC all day and not have a problem... and to be honest, I'm very used to the 460 rounds too now. I can somewhat comfortably shoot those one handed. It's unbelievable power and there isn't a bear in the woods I frequent that this gun won't stop. The 500 still scares me to actual use, but I proudly use this gun! I've alwasy sort of wondered what would happen if someone broke into my house (and of course posed a lethal threat) and I happened to have this gun on hand. A single 460 round to an intruder's head would do 2 things. It would make the head POP like the watermelon here and also it would make me 100% deaf in an instant. This is the loudest gun I've ever shot. At the range the other guns sound like air rifles compared to this.

I have one with the 5" bbl. With Hornady 200 gr flex tip it is one of the most accurate hand guns I own. I love shooting that thing. Wear good ear protection if you decide to get one. The first time I used it was at an indoor range, and that monster rattled the windows on the range.

You have to try the large performance center version! Shot 5 rounds of 380 grain bear loads! The shockwave coming back at you in your face is quite the experience. well made piece of engineering is why I like these large frame smith's

The video quality is very good. I like how john keeps the camera steadily focused on the gun at all times. I really do get a sense of what each firearm is about in each video. I wont be buying a hand cannon like this ever, but it would be fun to shoot.

Dear Santa, I've been a really good boy this year and all I want is a .460 XVR S&W Mag!!!! Hickok thanks for the great vid! I got to comment though - I've never seen you switch up your grip like you did with this one. I've got a .44 629 6.5" and find myself doing the same thing - as opposed to my .357 28-2 which for some reason just "fits" my grip straight out. Keep `em comin' , always look forward to your vids :)

You may "not learn much" by shooting 45 Colt through this thing. But you'd certainly have a lot of fun. 45 Colt seems perfectly accurate, too. Hickok45 hitting targets with ease with 45 Colt also demonstrates that short rounds in long cylinders are not inherently inaccurate, as is so often heard.

Yeah, and if you have one of these, (I have Magnum Research's .460 S&W) you can put it in a chest holster like I do and leave the rifle in the truck. I don't have any trouble shooting it at all, unless you want to call one pair of busted custom handgrips from the recoil trouble.

Great video and information. I sold my Freedom Arms 7.5" 454 Casull about 20 years back and regret it every time I go to the range. The S&W is the less expensive version that would allow me to have the caliber back. If Buds has a Freedom Arms 454 to send you or any other Freedom Arms models for that matter, would be a great review. They make revolvers like nobody else.

I had the 2 1/2" "Bear" survival kit. The recoil was not that bad at all and I am not a big tuff guy by any means. The concussion of the muzzle blast another story. I wore in the ear plugs and muffs any time I shot it. I always pondered if I would take on a grizzly hand to hand before shooting that thing with no ear protection.
