This podcast will challenge decades of "common knowledge" about what type of rifle and bullet should be used for big game hunting. In fact, if you can't have an open mind about things you "know" to be true, you probably shouldn't listen to this. We don't say that to be dramatic, but because being willing to accept information that challenges widely-held assumptions is critical to processing this information...
When you listen to this conversation you will hear that killing big game animals quickly, cleanly, and consistently doesn't typically require a big caliber and a tough bullet. And why the bigger, heavy-hitting rifles are mostly counter-productive.

Years ago, I stopped using my 300 Rum, 300 WM, 28 Nos. I now use 6.5 PRC for deer and sometimes elk, and 7 PRC for elk. My biggest reason is BC and shot placement advantages with less recoil, and if needed a follow up shot. Not to mention less meat waste from internal shock to muscles. I did this because what I discovered out in the field. Unfortunately, many hunters don't get to have numerous amounts of western hunting experiences to see what they really need and don't need.

I'm now giving my 300wm the side-eye...🙃...but it is just doing what I expected it to do. Thanks for providing some info for those of us looking to consider even more information before making changes on our hunting rifle of choice.

Thanks for the written summary on your website! I’m looking forward to the second episode. My family has an oryx and Barbary sheep tag this year, and in my research I’ve seen people mention both of those animals are extra “tough” and that you need extra knock down power. Since they’re both from Africa their vitals are in a different spot (more forward), I think they have gotten their “tough” reputation from hunters shooting in the wrong spot, elk/deer vitals. Like you guys mentioned, most of the animals we hunt in Northern America are pretty similar

I've killed 2 Oryx, so my sample size isn't great, but I do have some experience. The first with a 308 with match ammo (ELD-M), the second with a 300PRC with ELD-X. Both within 100 yards broadside. Both first shots were double lungs. The 308 absolutely dropped it where it stood. The 300 took 2 follow-up shots to finish it off, but it didn't go more than 5 yards. I don't think they are "tough" animals, but people tend to use bullets that don't expand nearly rapidly enough. An Oryx is smaller than a cow elk. Aoudad are not particularly tough either. I've killed 4 (2 male and 2 female). And none of them moved after the first shot. They are really small. The ranch owner culls them with a 22-250.

Someone should let the 1000yd F-class shooters know that they can shoot better with a smaller caliber. 😂

This conversation is about terminal performance on big game, not external ballistics, or anything to do with shooting F-class.

Because a 27 lb .300wsm on mechanical front and rear rests is just like shooting an 8 lb hunting rifle from field positions. Someone should tell F-class shooters about 6BR's and .284win! Oh wait...

Are you of the belief that 284 win (which has dominated FClass popularity for a while) is a big cartridge for shooting in 20# f-class guns?
@egrootveld
@egrootveld 6 күн бұрын
@@brodychapman8348 no, I was saying that F-class shooters *do* shoot smaller cartridges. I'm not a benchrest guy, but I'd guess a 20lb+ .284win is less recoil than a 6CM hunting weight riflle.
