48 - FRA warning for tank cars leaving shops

My FRA inspector told me to pay attention to any cars recently out of shop. He said the FRA has received multiple complaints across the US, specifically tank cars, coming out of shop with quality control issues. I am passing along his warning.

I appreciate the videos you put out, thanks. If you ever get a chance to document different service maintenance such as pipe schedule sizing and type, re painting, galvanic corrosion and dissimilar metals please do share.

Will do. Concerning pipe schedules, welded pipe is sch40, threaded pipe is sch80 for all I do. Using sch80 for welding or sch120 for threaded pipe is reserved for pressures and service greater than shown in these videos, and they have smaller flow ratings. Next time I do a project I'll shoot a video. Thanks

Well i have joined the industry. then again i only fill the Bottles. in the building next to rail yard.

Welcome aboard! Cylinder sales are crucial to this industry. One of the bulk plants that gets delivered to from my place uses 9-12, 000 gallons each day that they fill cylinders.

Are they talking tank car shops or general RIP tracks? Most RIP tracks do not deal with any of the tank stuff just the railcar stuff like couplers wheels side bearings etc.. Keep in mind just because a car was in a shop doesn't mean the valves were even looked at. The carriers don't have anyone qualified to deal with valves or any tank car specific items, thats all contracted out. At least up here it is

My inspector specifically mentioned tank cars that were shopped primarily for their scheduled maintenance, but also in shop for other general reasons. Thanks for commenting.
