I’ve been clabbering my extra milk and the chickens love it. Tons of protein 🤗. I’m also throwing them all the cow patties. Their run is right next to the cow pen. They dig through the manure for undigested grain and are composting it for the garden.

This was a fantastic video! I had no idea just how many things you can feed a chicken! Knowing things like that can make keeping chickens way more economical. I am very seriously thinking on getting some chickens for eggs (I know I eat enough eggs in my household for it to be well worth the effort).

Mine get so animated getting to dig through the new bedding in the coop. I spread my coop bedding in the yard and they love scratching through that just as mulch and it covers the yard tamping down odors and giving them hours of play time!

Justin thanks for letting us know about the Teflon coated bulbs! We checked with Mr Google pants and that coating on bulbs is called PTFE…. and it says PTFE is not good for BIRDS. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! I thought I was being so smart using a plastic bulb incase it broke, then I’d have no glass on the run floor. Who knew!

I feed them whey with old bread, cornbread, etc. pretty much anything that we are done eating. In the winter I give then black oil sunflower seeds and cracked corn. They are not impressed with the snow but deal with it. I still free range the chickens in the winter. They go under the deck or to the lean-to to dust bath. It's so fun watching them trek behind one another from coop to water to dust bath. The rooster goes running every time the hen announced laying an egg. Entertainment! Never thought to give them road kill.

I loved the video you did a year or two back with the guy that didn't really feed his chickens but they lived on a compost pile or something like that? :) This is a great video for those of us that tend to spoil our chickens a little too much! I hand raised my from hatchlings and they think "I am the Parent" when they hear me talking they come running, they sit down beside me and tell me stories... Kacaca Ka ka ka... :) Crazy chicks!!

Since moving to the countryside, we have no food waste. If the sheep won't eat it, the chickens will, or it goes on the compost heap. Our chickens love fat trimmings. Before putting compost on beds, I spread it on a tarp for the chickens to pick out the larvae and bugs. And they enjoy grain more when it's been soaked overnight, with a little apple cider vinegar added.

Great suggestions Justin! My girls will eat most things and I had a girl who was low in niacin (she couldn’t walk straight) so bread, rice and oats brought her back to life. I also have no problem feeding chicken bones from soup stock to my chickens. My rabbits soiled hay is always interesting to them… i am in Canada so it is cold here and they love scratching up stuff… my girls do really well with whole corn, black oil sunflower and DE too…. I usually put whole wheat or barley too but that’s not a favourite. Last year black oil sunflower was a favourite But for some reason whole corn was a big fav this year! Never know…. Just need to keep trying new things… kitchen scraps are always a big hit!

I eat salad every day so what’s ever still on my plate goes into chicken bucket for next morning…they love sprouted lentels

Since your chickens are under your poly tunnel you could make an area to plant a cover crop or toss old seeds you won't use in the garden because they are getting out dated..put compost....cover planted seeds with a 4'×6' 2"x4" frame with hardware cloth on top to put over seeds sprouting...they will grow up through the wire, The chickens can nibble tips off providing fresh greens all winter....without digging them up......peas make a tasty nibble...lettuce spinach, kale any old seeds you won't use mixed up is O.K....start another frame each month so one is always growing to eat...pull off wire cover when second one ready to eat do a new spot start another one...you are building new soil for your poly frame garden with these compost + peas= nitrogen added with these frames put them where you will be planting your spring veggys...

It is always super windy here. We have the deep liter method going on in the coop and a radiant flat panel heater that they can go stand in front of if they get cold. We have a heated water stand that their water sits on to keep it from freezing (which it actually did just a bit yesterday as was -8. We have hay bales just around the outside of the coop and run to block the wind. Our rooster does have a tiny bit of frostbite on his comb but today they are staying in the coop (of their own accord as their door is still open) and it looks ok. Just gave them a freshly cooked squash just slightly warm. They get crushed shell, scratch, and meal worms daily. When I remember, I give them scraps. They seem overall happy thus far.

Uncle Justin is centerfold in the most recent Premier one catalog with Josiah in a supporting role. There is not an apron in sight! So is it a doppelganger?? The chickshaw 2.0 and turkey shaw are featured! So cool ! He's bringing sexy homesteading back. So bad he wears the plaid! I have made the chickshaw 2.0 and it is SO efficient! I have gone from zero chickens to sixteen chickens, 14 hens and two roosters, and hatching my own chicks. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
