This video is now available on a brand new DVD: 'Uphill & Down Dale, Northwest Mainline Steam, 2007-2011'. Go to www.linesidervideo.co.uk/dvds for more information.
Ex-LMS 8F freight loco 48151 blitzes the southbound climb to Ais Gill Summit with a most spectacular display. This view shows her breasting the summit at about 7p.m. on 19/08/07. With the temperature in the 50s, and a cold northerly wind, it felt more like November than August, but was all the better for it!

I travelled behind her in 1989, and the run is on mainline 89. On that occasion, she reached 72 mph, it was the drivers last day on the footplate, and he wanted to go out in style. He was presented with a plaque on Garsdale station. There is one clip near Lazonby i think it is, and you cannot believe how fast the wheels are turning. An amazing engine in the right hands.

72......on an 8F! Ummmmm. The rods would bend in the mid 60s and the loco is limited to 50 anyway.

@bolendoc Thank you very much. There must be some some really historic moments in your footage. There are so many runs from those times that I wish I could have captured; 46229 on its Blue Riband runs, 1000 and 5690 double heading... There is some super 8mm footage up on KZfaq from acw71000 which is so valuable.

I used to drive the 43's out of Kings X up the ECML... With 4500 hp under the bonnet ( 2250 hp ) one up front and one up the botty there was plenty of power on tap... Pulling out of the station on notch five with the Paxman Valenta turbo's screaming their little heads off and clouds of exhaust smoke ( sorry Greta Thunberg ) was something to behold with more excitement to enjoy... 125 mph here we come although they would top 148 mph... Now there is food for thought but as I did not fancy tea and biscuits with the Boss well need I say more...

I was watching Marsden Rail 27 (the one about the S&C, great DVD btw) and it showed quite a few 8F's double heading freight trains. Would the 8F normally need double heading on the S&C up this part?

Yeah, although I think she was only doing 30 as there is a 30mph slack over the top at the moment. I think the 2 cylinder beat makes it sound faster than other engines at this speed.

Lovely work, great sound. Eerily similar sound to our much more powerful and bigger wheeled NSW Australian 38 class, comments anyone ? Of course in Australia we don't call 1 in 100 a bank ... 1 in 75s are normal, 1 in 40s rate a mention

Its not so much the 2-cylinder beat as the small driving wheels. You've got 4 beats per revolution on 4'8 1/2'' wheels there, as opposed to, say, 4 beats per revolution on a 6' driving-wheeled Black Five. That's an absolutely cracking shot you've got there nonetheless!

@theredraven Depends on what the 8F had to pull up there of course. There's the better part of 500 tons behind the drawbar of this one, & it doesn't look like it's struggling. A single engine should certainly handle 650 tons.
