recognition is something that makes people feel very good...to be honest, it's why most people try hard at anything in life, not because of what it actually gets them, but because they want recognition from someone (parents, partner, children, peers). why not socially construct silly awards to make people happier? win win

i think the discussion on french people's rudeness is interesting since even we tend to see eachother as mean depending on where we are from in the country (north vs south, parisian vs provencial etc...) , i'd gladly talk about it on the podcast as a french creep
@amityislandchum
@amityislandchum Жыл бұрын
As an American creep, my experience in France was that Paris absolutely lived up to the stereotypes. I spoke decent conversational French, and still (most of) the Parisians were incredibly rude, rolled their eyes even at the most basic of questions, and refused to speak French to me. On the other hand, the people in the south of France were extremely nice and personable. I went to a lot of small towns where nobody spoke English, and they were more than patient with my limited French capabilities. The south was also more gorgeous than I imagined! But I have to add that I dealt with a level of sexual harassment all over the country unlike anything I've experienced in any other country I've been to. I was 14 years old the first time I went to France, and the things that grown men would say to me in public were absolutely sickening.
@kppsan
@kppsan Жыл бұрын
@@amityislandchum Sadly i feel like some french people feel offended by americans (even when they approach french people with the best of intentions as you did) because they have this weird stereotype of them feeling entitled or something.... Also it seems as Paris has maybe the same problem i've heard about New York? Since a lot of people come visit all year long, citizens that live there get tired of tourists and want to just get on with their lives without getting bothered. I'm from the south of France and i do feel like in areas of France outside of Paris we are nicer and willing to communicate with strangers. That might be because we are not jammed in a very heavy parisian routine? I'm happy to hear you enjoyed the rest of France because it's a beautiful country with amazing landscapes and great experiences to live (apart from the sexual harassment obviously, growing up getting catcalled was not fun at all for me and my friends either and i know exactly how it must have felt, french men can be really gross bastards)

@@amityislandchum Parisians would initially be a bit rude to me because they thought I was American but they'd relax instantly once I told them I'm Mexican. I was only 15 but I knew that for the rest of the trip I'd have to say I'm Mexican to be treated nicely (which had the opposite effect of saying it in the US) lol

Maybe someone can corroborate this: I heard a theory that French people have this distain and cynicism toward others esp other countries is because they’ve always been number 2, historically. Rich and powerful and cultured yes, but always behind someone be it Spain, Britain, America, Germany, etc. and that creates a lot of bitterness. Also personally when I was in Paris, I went to this old-timy lindy-hop dance thing and a Parisian woman was visibly unhappy that she was paired with me. (I’m Asian.)

As an expat in France, I can confirm that a lot of French people (not all) can be a bit extreme about their language they just can't stand people not mastering it and pronouncing things incorrectly and they would even judge you for that. As for the arrogance and rudeness stereotype, having lived in a major city, Paris and a small one near the Atlantic coast, it's 100% true for the former and completely the opposite for the latter. I was even creeped out by how nice people were there at first.

Can confirm. Growing up I spent a lot of time traveling to and around France. The random small towns felt like a different country. I tried to explain to my yankee husbeast what driving in the city is like. It’s not something I’ve seen before or since . I had a universal drivers license but was too intimidated to drive there.

Rob's talking about Parisians, I think. In my experience, non-Parisian French people are typically pretty nice. But Parisians are always "too busy" to have any compassion. I once was at a Parisian cafe with my partially deaf friend who had worked really hard to learn French. And as soon as he heard her Scottish accent and beginner-level French, he replied in English. We ordered drinks, he walked away, then I "went to the bathroom" but secretly found the server and paid him 20 euro to finish service in French. I know money talks, yada yada, but all I'm saying is that Parisians seem to always act "too busy" to be nice. Everywhere else I went in that country was inviting and people showed a genuine interest in me. But Paris is pretty heartless. Update: They are correct about the sacred break time. I went to the bank once and none of the employees would look at me. I said in French, "Hello... excuse me... is the bank open today?" like trying to be nice and eventually the bank manager walked out of his office and was like, "Hey, sorry, they're on their lunch break, how can I help you?" LMAO this was in the northeast.

For me it's when you try to speak French to be polite and the French pretend not to know what you're saying. I know they know what I'm saying because a) I took French for like 8 years at school and the phrase I'm saying is basic af and b) other French people have zero issues understanding me. But they can tell I'm British and apparently that's enough to be rude. Go to Germany instead lol, they're so nice there.

I would hope most people don't do that! this seems extremely rude to me. I'm French (and living in England actually) and always find it great to meet native English speakers who learn French and try it out, it's an honour to have foreigners being interested in our language and culture.

@@kevinh.1624 Tbh I always assumed it wasn't the majority of France, more a good proportion of French customer service workers. Since I've only visited France as a tourist, the vast majority of people I've interacted with likely interact with other tourists on a pretty regular basis (food staff, ticket vendors ect.) and obviously something there has put them off foreigners lmao. So nice that you live in the UK! Bit of a nightmare at the moment though with the cost of living and prime ministers coming in and out like a revolving door. Hope you're finding it okay here!
