Tight Curl Wash and Go! You're setting yourself up for a failed Wash + Go by doing too much... and not enough at the same time. This is a long one, but I'm sure you can identify with the habits that were practiced in this video by our new guest. Forget everything you've been told about the Natural hair game. The Wetter the better is not a thing... when styling. Did you know that Twist-Outs are far more taxing and require a lot more knowledge when doing them?

Yasss finally someone who said it…. My hair HATES being wet or drenched when I do wash and goes. I can never relate to most KZfaqrs who say your hair has to be soaking wet to get the best wash and goes like no that doesn’t apply to people like me. Can u do more videos on this topic ❤

Finally someone said it! For some textures, styling on damp hair works better than soaking wet. I have a rippled outer texture, thick strands loose and tight curls. Styling on damp hair gives me more definition and smoothes my hair down! Thank you for this video and your knowledge. Also your model has gorgeous hair!😍😍

You’re welcome! Yes! Essentially adding water dilutes your holding product. For rippled textures (whether fine or coarse strands) we want to smooth down the outer textures then clump the curls. Those with smooth and flat strands have the flexibility of not having to do this 2-part process. They can use foams, botanical gels, light gold gels, etc. we cannot. Thank you for watching!

Thank you ! I recently developed the perfect wash n go routine for my 4a curls by using less water. Years before my wash n gos were so puffy and stiff when I used gels on soaking wet hair. So glad I found that out. And funny you say “you don’t need creams as much, but usually in cooler weather”, because I found mousse and gels worked perfectly for me ! So happy you popped on my feed. Thanks!

The "adding/not adding water" thing is in relation to the types of gel you're using. Botanical gels like uncle funkys curly magic and ouidad stronger hold gel like water, a lot of water and if you don't use enough you won't have any definition also water is what actually moisutrizes the hair. Water and conditioner. If you condition well enough you do not need cream for the winter. I dropped oils and butters and stuck to shampoo, conditioner and one botanical gel (ouidad) and I haven't looked back since. My hair has also been growing like a weed. It's always been long but now its way longer, easier to detangle, shinier, and healthier not to mention softer. I wash my hair every 4-6 days
@LavidaLovesCoils
@LavidaLovesCoils Жыл бұрын
You are correct but this particular video is focused on her hair characteristics. Botanical gels (high humectant gels) are not strong hold and aren’t suited for her more rippled outer texture, and dehydrated state of hair. She wouldn’t have the results that you listed with those gels combined with a lot of water. The other videos stored in my camera (and a previous video with a more smooth and flat surface) would have flexibility (strong hold, botanical, foams..). I hope this helps you get more clarity on holding products.

It also depends on the formulation of the holding product. If the holding product is extremely drying, containing like many brands on the market, an alcohol that is intended to pull moisture from the hair (for a quicker dry and rapid hold) I’d recommend a moisture buffering gelatinous humectant gel under a holding gel in this case. This would be used in the warmer and more humid months. I’d recommend a cream in the more dry and cooler months. I have a video on cream application.

Start with a clarifying shampoo then hydrating shampoo. Thats where moisture is born. Spend time with your shampoo. You don’t need a leave-in conditioner unless you are high porosity due to color, heat or mechanical damage, otherwise this will sit on top and cause more dehydration. Thank you for watching!!

I know this has nothing to do with how u do ur wash and go and I’m still trying to learn but I have watched the Anthony Dickie’s technique so now I’m confused a bit but I am a 4C kinky texture. One thing I know is there has to be other great ways to do a wash and go. My natural hair draws up so tight but the goal is to get my curls to loosen and hang.
@LavidaLovesCoils
@LavidaLovesCoils 3 ай бұрын
Well the first thing I try to navigate with those seeking my guidance is having realistic expectations. Second is to truly understand texture and that hair typing isn’t a thing? Is your hair coarse stranded or fine? Smooth and flat or more rippled? What about wave pattern? If you have a tighter texture it may never hang but having the right holding product will help with seeing the potential of your hair. I love Dickey’s method but know that it does require washing your hair often. I did it as a challenge and my hair was so much easier to work with every day. So, your curls will only “loosen” if you have coarse strands. Because coarse strands are so thick and heavy, they will hand from a curl to a wave. Fine strands will unfortunately always shrink.

@LavidaLovesCoils
@LavidaLovesCoils Жыл бұрын
Your foundation (cleanse and conditioning) is how you moisturize your hair. It isn’t necessary to constantly rehydrate the hair throughout the week. Leave-in conditioners aren’t necessary unless you have high porosity hair due to heat damage, color damage or mechanical damage. I touch on this in the interactive/fillable guide. You ALWAYS should apply product on wet or damp hair. The cuticle will absorb the product and heat will seal your product. I mention leave-in conditioners, creams and why we don’t refresh in the video.

@LavidaLovesCoils
@LavidaLovesCoils Жыл бұрын
Gels are created to hold hair so no moisturizing properties are needed. Gels shouldn’t contain emollients but sometimes they contain humectants (aloe, pectin, marshmallow root, flaxseed) which helps to move product around a bit. They aren’t necessary with the right foundation. Botanical gels work best with fine - medium strand thickness with a flat and smooth outer texture. Not this hair character displayed in the video.

technique is something else. there are tons and no one way is the only way. Her definition looks great and her hair looks juicy and full. Today, i performed a wash n go on a client starting with a soaking wet base. I used a water based, mucilage humectant as a leave in (I chose Uncle Funky's Daughter Curly Magic). The soaking wet hair brings out definition and ads moisture. The mucilage locks the water in the strand. Finally, the gel locks the definition in place. Now, before I was a stylist, good ole eco styler on damp hair worked well too. Unfortunately, the formula is too drying because of the high alcohol content🤷🏽‍♀.
@LavidaLovesCoils
@LavidaLovesCoils 10 ай бұрын
Yes, you are correct. That technique and product combination will work on those with a smooth and flat outer surface. Most tight curls, whether they have a fine strands or more coarse in thickness, have more of a rippled outer texture and unfortunately, leaving the hair soaking wet will only yield a very short-lived style and/or an Afro with little to no definition. Essentially (which I mention in a lot of my videos) the holding product is being diluted. A humectant-based gel is absorbing moisture, encouraging shrinkage and a broken cast. I don’t use eco. I know it’s easy to assume great care is taken when someone has a head full of hair. She came in because she faced challenges of dehydration, broken ends and long wash days. Water is necessary but it needs to be used properly. I see many people spritzing, spraying, and adding water in non-productive ways. If water doesn’t penetrate the cuticle, it won’t do its job.

So... What if we're using a botanical gel that says to use on wet or sometimes even say on soaking wet hair, would you still suggest to only apply it on damp hair?
@LavidaLovesCoils
@LavidaLovesCoils Жыл бұрын
I don’t recommend botanical gels on most hair types. They have humectants that keep the hair wet all day and don’t contribute to hold/longevity. Those with a smooth and flat outer texture along with a looser wave pattern has the flexibility to use these products. Most tighter curls and those with coarse strand thickness will not be able to successfully use these. As far as directions. Many of the companies are parroting what is said by other companies but not considering all of their consumers. Tight curls have always been left out of conversation.

This makes sense because I've used uncle funky and my hair was always mushy. I preferred gels like eco styler before my hair detox, but I was told that it was bad for my hair (didn't allow proper moisture and hydration). If I'm clarifying properly, can I use more hardening gels? My stylist put me on uncle funky, innersense create hold, and trepadora papaya slip but I only get 2-3 days of hold. For hair characteristics, I have fine strands, medium density, and a mix of coarse and silky surface texture.

Those with a flat and smooth outer texture and more coarse (thicker) strands can make it work. Tighter curls with a more rippled surface and finer strands will not get favorable results. We will have an afro with a "cream only" application. When I talk about "no cream" and "use less water" I'm referring to those specific hair characteristics.

Maybe u mean it doesn’t work on 4b/4c hair because my coils are pretty tight and it has more of a cottony texture. Definitely not smooth or flat. My hair just doesn’t seem to need as much of a hold as someother peoples do. Most gels make my hair too crunchy. Might hair seems to like light and or medium hold products. I guess everyone’s hair is different. I just didn’t like that u said you shouldn’t use creams because some people may need or prefer a cream to a gel. Gel wash n gos made me hate wash n go’s at first because I always associated them with crunchy hair.

I work on science-based application and formulation. Wave pattern will affect application but outer texture, strand thickness, and current condition of the hair has more bearing on the product selection and styling goals. Creams contain more emollients (which lubricate, aid with pliability and softness). Dependent on porosity, dew point and overall temperature they may not be necessary. I don't believe I said "you shouldn't use creams". They shouldn't be used in more humid temperatures (based on the collective styling goal... longevity of a WNG). You are also color-treated (bleached) so you are more porous and more prone to dehydration. Those emollients will fill the cuticle. I also wouldn't use a strong-hold gel on your hair because it will break. A light - medium hold, or a more botanical gel would suffice.. not a cream. This video is not applicable to your hair.

Very loaded question. I will have a video on this soon. Typing only tells part of the story at different stages of growth and hair health. It can look “4b” or “4C” when it’s dehydrated but “4a” when hydrated and 3c when the right product is applied. This is general for anyone. Typing isn’t definitive. The strand thickness and outer texture matter most. She’s fine - medium strands with a rippled outer texture. I break those things down in the guide and I will do a deep dive in the upcoming book. Everyone’s methods to get from point A to point B is different, however, how you make it to point C (longevity) and back again (point A) cannot be disputed. Science is science. Cream-based stylers used the way that many people are instructed to use them yield the same result… temporary hold and style on SOME hair structures, but zero hold on most “4-type hair”. I am one of the few voices for fine-stranded, rippled-outer surfaced, tight curls.. most of these popular methods do not work for longevity. Dickey is THE Moisture King. An OG that pushes frequent washes. That is solid advice across the board. I once did a Dickey challenge and washes my hair everyday. I loved the results and I think many of us would benefit from doing this.

This does not work for appearance, feel (because grease?), efficiency or for the health of the hair. Castor oil, cream and grease are of no benefit to the hair on its own. Grease was developed to repel moisture and avoid any water to keep a press from reverting. This combination causes a massive amount of build-up, breakage and is extremely messy.

@LavidaLovesCoils
@LavidaLovesCoils Жыл бұрын
Wave pattern, hair typing and overall density don’t really give the full story. Hair typing sets us up for failure. One can be more coiled in a circle when the hair is shorter or in a more humid area and dependent on product but as it grows out, because of the strand thickness. It can appear more elongated and zig-zagged. So the main things to remember about hair characteristics are your strand thickness AND outer texture. Is is more rippled on the surface or more smooth and flat. You have more product and outcome flexibility with a smooth and flat outer texture. I can tell you that mane choice has far to many fillers and oils, while Camille rose curl maker is a botanical gel that attracts moisture from the hair. Then pectin, marshmallow root and glycerin are humectants and have little to no hold depending on your hair characteristics and texture. I would suggest using your camille rose gel as a base and then layering a small amount of the mane choice on top of each section, that way you get the hold and the fluff- I actually do this on my hair (Ive got a video on this) and it works really well and lasts all week :)
@LavidaLovesCoils
@LavidaLovesCoils Жыл бұрын
@@kadadoeshair that won’t work on tight curls, fine strands and a rippled outer texture. It’s either an Afro or curls. Many “4 type” naturals cannot do both. Hair typing doesn’t explain the entire hair story or hair characteristics. Camille rose has too many fillers (I started out with curl maker when I wasn’t as knowledgeable as a Texture Artist) and Mane choice has far too many emollients. I’d recommend you clarify more often and change both lines and you’ll see more curl consistently through your strands. You have more curl definition because you are more porous on the ends and water easily penetrates.
@kadadoeshair
@kadadoeshair Жыл бұрын
I agree about the clarifying for sure we don't do enough of that and it changes results massively when we don’t have buildup on the hair My gel base of choice is actually 99% aloe vera gel then a dime size of mane choice per hair quarter to add extra hold- I suggested she use Camille as she has that in her stash already and didn't want her to waste it :) Either way its worth playing around with what you have- I suppose thats the beauty of our hair as its so specific to the individual :)

@Kada Does Hair for the health of her hair and the end goal, I recommend that combination not be used just for the sake of using it up. The formulation of Curlmaker alone will cause build-up given the high content of coconut oil and castor oil. A gel shouldn’t have oil in the formulation. A 99% aloe based gel is a humectant has very little hold and will not extend the wear of her styling. Thank you for your input. My goal of using this platform as a Texture Expert of a very diverse spectrum of textures from coils, curls and waves with many years of extensive research, trial and error and experience is to get the correct information into the world through science and specific hair characteristics. It is not necessarily individual-based while most texture hair wearers have the same combination of challenges; dehydrated hair, frizzy ends, puffy tight roots, hair style uncertainty, and a constant need to focus on their hair throughout the week. These are the things that I hope to convey easily by using this platform.
