My own experience with the P1000 is that for long distances the atmospheric distortions are the main issue and greater zoom would probably not be helpful. My biggest issue is actually for much closer subjects where the camera cannot focus at full zoom, so you have to actually zoom out a little to focus. Camera size and weight are also important and I am still undecided as to whether I prefer the P950 or the P1000 (I have both). The P1000 can get you very slightly better resolution at full zoom, but that comes at the cost of significantly larger size and weight, and in reality it is actually very hard to tell from looking at a photos of a subject taken with both cameras which camera was used in each instance.

The good thing about this set up at least is that big lenses have tripod collars so you have better balance of your whole setup whereas the Nikon P1000 is front heavy and is very unstable once you pass the 2000 mm mark. Nikon Coolpix P - 1000 was originally designed as a customer camera. This camera is more within the range of what they call Hollywood. My Nikon can produce quite sharp images using an extended 12,000 mm focus - which is pretty close to this. But this features a more powerful zoom and is therefore obviously a winner. Both lenses are very heavy, hard to carry around and sensitive.I´d love to see Nikon produce larger and more powerful zooms within a future P - 1000 series, which would range from P - 1000, to what I call Nikon Coolpix P - 12000. Such lenses would have to be interchangable.
