I wonder what the mentality was at the time for this technique to be the norm. It’s strange that neither of them has their guard up, and they never attack the body. Perhaps there were certain rules in place that put constraints/ incentives for this kind of boxing to be favored, but it sure looks strange by today’s standards.

@@seeriktus The rules were different, rabbit punches, clinching, different types of holds and several other "dirty" moves were still legal, along with time limits being higher. If you believe a modern boxer would last 20 rounds, for years with those rules, think again. Watch modern guys in prefights or street brawls clinching and throwing kitten punches and tell me they would be better with different rules.

Actually Gentleman James J. Corbett lost to Bob Fitzsimmons due to a classic solar plexus punch which knocked the air out of Corbett. That last round was unfortunately missed in this video though the last still frame may have been Corbett on the far left on the floor. While not a knock out he didn‘t make the count to his feet. The fight was not supposed to have been filmed but a concealed camera was smuggled in to get the footage. I was one row behind and saw the whole thing…all those years ago..in Carson City.

Fitzsimmons, (a Cornishman by birth), was a rugged individual with a knockout punch. By todays standard he'd have been at best a super-middleweight yet he knocked out many a genuine heavyweight. Corbett himself, (buttock man), who himself was knocked out by Fitzsimmons in this fight, would have been rated no more than a light Cruiserweight today.
@COBBETT1215
@COBBETT1215 2 жыл бұрын
@Lantern In The Woods Bat Masterson is indeed the timekeeper at this match. It wasn't the only match in which Fitzsimmons was involved with a famous lawman. In 1896 Wyatt Earp refereed a match between Fitzsimmons and rival heavyweight Tom Sharkey. Fitzsimmons was beating Sharkey easily and in round 8 he finally flattened him with his famous punch to the solar plexus, (the punch that also did for Corbett). Unaccountably Earp immediately declared Sharkey the winner. Controversy raged for days afterwards as there were already suspicions that Earp had taken a bribe to ensure Fitzsimmons wouldn't win. The fallout from the fight did real damage to Earp's reputation .

I don't understand why I can't believe these people are now dead. It's probably a cognitive trap. I see these old shots that have miraculously survived to this day and I can’t believe it. So many years have passed. It becomes scary. Someday I'll die too, and this will all be over. Retro shots and just chronicles from any country, when the life of different people was filmed on camera, brings to tears. Such a strange indescribable feeling arises. It's like looking at old photographs of the past. All these people lived, studied, made plans, communicated, dreamed, quarreled, betrayed and loved. They endured hardships, cried, dreamed, were sick, suffered, hated ....A very strange feeling. I can't put into words. There is a residue in the soul, some shame and sadness. Long and deaf sadness... I'm crying...Hundreds of years separate us from them. Abyss. Such pain inside...

This is extraordinary! I was hoping the person with the camera panned over to where the orchestra was playing. It sounded like a fair size orchestra that not only played beautifully but just loud enough to completely dominate the audio of this event. OH MY GOD! Is that DON KING in the second row on the left about 4 people from the corner of the ring!?!?? Wow, he looks so much younger than the last time I saw him in California during the Los Angeles earthquake of 1994. We were both attending Harry Nilsson’s funeral. The earthquake hit during the lowering of the casket at the cemetery. Don was between Michael Palin and myself. Of course George was there on the other side from where I was. George was with Ringo. Did you know that Ringo was Harry’s best man at his wedding? No wait. Maybe it was Harry who was Ringo’s best man when Ringo married Barbara Bach. Funny, I don’t remember if Barbara was there. You remember Barbara right? She was an actress and even played a Russian spy in a James Bond movie. Which movie? It was The Spy Who Loved Me… of course. I didn’t like the way Roger Moore played Bond. Too goofy. I liked Connery’s Bond. Yeah, Sean was a good Bond. I have only tried to drink a martini 3 times in my life. Once in the airport in Montana during a stopover on my way to Seattle. It was an airport bar - whatever that means. I just finished watching a Bond movie on the flight from Toronto and it got me curious about the “James Bond martini”. So I ordered one. I hated it. The next two times weren’t any different even though I had them in much nicer locations. One place was tropical. I’ve often been asked why I cheer for the Boston Bruins when I live only an hour away from Toronto. Apparently I am supposed to be a Maple Leafs fan. I was informed that the distance from the Maple Leaf Gardens to where I was living is clearly and logically within an area considered “local” with regard to a sports team fan base. I quickly understood that by proximity and the deliberate weather of southern Ontario made myself and every other human, domesticated non-human and anything else considered living (by definition including aphids, leatherjackets, sandpaper and nematodes). But I had other ideas so I bought a 1973 Plymouth custom four door satellite. It was blue. My proclamation was simple and immediately accepted. I said, “ Bobby Orr is from Parry Sound and has parents including one mother and a semi-father who had the respect of all semi-parents from Inverness and lurches along the ditches of Wellington side road 32. I’ve been told what my story is but so far I haven’t received any fruit or artichokes. Another bishop proper said with one nostril that everyone born in any season except the last four must - by the age of 9 (months or weeks I wondered) - know the basic fundamental foundation of all pondered and guessed during the passage of each breath taken and given back then scattered along roadsides for all who pass and all who fumble the greatest knowledge to withhold deep and down. The question and answer. The found what was seeked. The revelation of meaning, purpose, excrement. Seven words….. what is the difference between a duck?

In the process of coloring old movies, is there color information hidden in old tapes, or does whoever is doing the process put the colors they think look best? Back when protecting yourself was considered low class. Just a competition on who smacks harder. Honorable and idiotic at the same time.

If I had tried any of those styles boxing as a young man, I'd spent more time on my back than on my feet🤕 But really cool to see old timey boxing in color, and in relatively normal speed👍
