Copán Ruinas is located in western Honduras, in the Department of Copán, just 14 kilometers from the El Florido border with Guatemala. For many years, Copán Ruinas has been famous for its magnificent Mayan ruins, declared Archaeological Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 1980. Today Copán Ruinas is considered the Paris of the Mayan world in Central America.
Discovered in 1570 by Diego García de Palacio, Copán is one of the most important sites remaining from the Mayan civilization. The remains of the city and the imposing public squares reveal the three main periods of its development before the city was abandoned at the beginning of the 9th century AD The Hieroglyphic Staircase Plaza has a monumental staircase, one of the exceptional structures of the Mayan culture. On the 10-meter-wide steps, there are more than 1,250 individual glyphs, constituting the longest known Mayan inscription. After the City was abandoned, it was swallowed by the jungle, which helped in its conservation.
One of the most investigated archaeological centres based on another natural phenomenon is caused by the Copán River, which surrounds the eastern part of the main site, causing erosion and leaving a natural archaeological cut, the largest on the American continent. which served to obtain information on the different phases of construction of the acropolis. A few kilometres away are also the sites “Las Sepulturas” and “Rastrojón”, both with their importance and history.

The city has a historical record that covers most of the classical period and has been reconstructed in detail by archaeologists and epigraphers. 1 Copan, originally probably called Oxwitik by the Mayans, 3 was a powerful city-state , ruling a vast kingdom in the southern Mayan region. 4​ The city suffered a major political disaster in 738 AD. C. , when Uaxaclajuun Ub'aah K'awiil , one of the greatest kings in the history of the Copán dynasty, was captured and executed by his former vassal, the king of Quiriguá . 5 ​6 ​7​ This unexpected defeat led to a 17-year hiatus during which Copán may have been under the rule of Quiriguá. 8
A significant portion of the eastern side of the acropolis was affected by erosion caused by the Copan River , although the river was diverted in the 1930s in order to protect the site from further damage. 1​ In 1980 Copán was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO .
