This was my first time ever at GRR! What an awesome little airport! Also, really nice to see the Delta and American MD-80s again as they have been pulled from DTW. This was filmed from the GRR observation area park! Hope you all enjoy!

I love Grand Rapids, they have a spotting area instead of getting chased by Detroit police! I go there all the time! Underrated for sure.

I do, too, but Gerald R Ford doesn't have bigger terminals and a plane train just like Chicago's O'Hare in Rosemont, Illinois and Hartsfield-Jackson in Southwest Atlanta, Georgia.

Damn I’m gonna miss that mad dog roar. I used to fly those out of Chicago all the time. Sad to see them go.

USANG KC-135's do an evolution of ~half-dozen touch-n-go's at GRR about once/month. That viewing area is an unexpectedly amazing, up-close place to see a heavy like that tap, roll, rotate, depart...circle airspace...repeat. Only other 4-holer I've seen there is an Atlas Air cargo 747 a couple times last year. UH-60's, P-8's, and C-130's show up once in a while. Spotted Canadian Snowbirds land a 4-ship formation about 3 weeks ago. New covered pavilion and restroom are awesome additions to the viewing area. If you're a plane nerd (like me) in town, you should pack a picnic and hangout there for a while. I live a dozen miles from the tarmac, directly under the approach corridor. Nice thing is...small airport restrictions on landings before 6a or after 11p...so my windows aren't rattled all night long. I'm lucky I don't have neck problems due to all my looking straight up into the sky.

Love the comment! Yeah, I really enjoyed GRR and will definitely be going back soon! I wish a lot more airports will follow GRR and add those observation parks! DTW especially needs one. Thanks for watching, Steven!

Love my hometown airport! I live under the approach for 26L. I can always tell when a Mad Dog is coming in on 26L or taking off from 8R. Sure going to miss them when they go away.

I've flown into GRR couple times and really liked it. I like DTW but the GR airport is almost the perfect size when traveling with kids. The two airports are almost equidistant from where my parents live.

Here in Michigan there are still A LOT of MD-80 series planes flying around. 8 times out of 10 plane sightings are of that family seen here in the Flint area coming and going from Bishop. Looks like GR is the same.

Awesome! No one has uploaded a GRR plane spotting video in years! This is honestly the best one I've seen and enjoy those old Mcdonell Douglas aircraft while you can. I think American Airlines is getting rid of their MD80s somewhere around 2019-20.

Lepp Aviation You’re welcome. I was actually in Detroit recently and I believe I drove right past that big parking garage that you would usually film at. Didn’t really have time to stop, but I would’ve totally taken advantage of that location. One spot that caught my attention was on the south side on Eureka rd right by the shell gas station. From the road, you just see the endless row of Delta aircraft.

I know this is an older video but it's great to see all the aircraft that I'm familiar with. I wonder if Delta flies A220's into GRR now? It was also nice seeing that new Frontier A320neo.

Delta isn't using mad dogs into DTW anymore?! Or just for the GRR route from DTW?
@LeppAviation

Yep, all MD-88s are all flown from ATL now. DTW only has the MD-90s and 717s now.

+Lepp Aviation If it’s for noise that’s BS. MD-80s use the newer JT8D-217 and -219 engines that are Stage III noise compliant and are only a little louder than the CFM-56s on 737s. The older JT8D-1 through -17 engines on the DC-9 ,727 and 732s are Stage II noise compliant and are way louder than the JT8D-217 and -219s. Even though nowadays in the US ,JT8D-1 through -17s have Stage III hush kits ,they are still louder than the -217s and -219s which don’t need any hush kit as they are already Stage III noise compliant.
@LeppAviation
@LeppAviation 5 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's noise. DL has a ton of 717s in DTW, so I think it's the amount of passengers. Because the 88 can hold more than a 717, they sent them to ATL because there are more passengers at that airport
@Duderocks5539
@Duderocks5539 5 жыл бұрын
+Lepp Aviation I see. Btw how close were you to the runway and were the MD-80s loud to you? There JT8D-217s and -219s are only like 2 decibels louder than a CFM-56 for example. Also the older JT8D-1 through -17 variants on the DC-9s and 727s are Stage II noise so they all have Stage III hush kits in the US. I have seen multiple DC-9s and 727s take off as close as 200 feet from the runway and when they go by they are louder than your yelling even with hush kits. but from the same distance they are still louder than the MD-80s right?
@LeppAviation
@LeppAviation 5 жыл бұрын
My guess is I was 500-700 feet from the runway. Absolutely they were loud, but you are correct, the JT8Ds fitted on the DC-9s and 727s are definitely louder than the ones on the MD-80s, even with the husk kits.

That is one very long takeoff roll for the G4 319, about as bad as the 737 ground gripper. Frankly I’m not impressed by rear engine aircraft that do not use the “cans” on engine reverse. I always thought that looked and sounded cool. The cut off must have been with the MD-88, with the MD-90 eliminating those gorgeous “cans”.Nice video, the only hub flights I didn’t see were MSP, SLC, JFK, The Frontier flight was a pudge A320neo
