The Geibi Line (芸備線, Geibi-sen) is a railway line operated by West Japan Railway Company (JR West) in the mountainous area of the Chūgoku region in Japan. It begins at Bitchū Kōjiro Station on the west side of Niimi, Okayama Prefecture, connecting through Miyoshi Station in Miyoshi, Hiroshima Prefecture, and terminating at Hiroshima Station in Hiroshima. The name of the line refers to the ancient provinces of Aki (安芸) (in Hiroshima Prefecture) and Bitchū (備中) (in Okayama Prefecture), which the line connects.
The line between Bingo-Ochiai Station and Tojo Station is an overpopulated route with only three round trips per day and the lowest average number of passengers passing through the line in JR West's service area, with only 9 passengers per day in 2020.
JR West is considering to abolish the aforementioned section and replace it with bus services.

素晴らしい動画をありがとうございます。美しい風景が続きますね。植林された針葉樹の部分もありますが、多くが人が手をつけてない広葉樹の原生林に近いまま残されてるようにも見えます。もし廃止されるということになれば記録としても大変貴重なものになると思います。

Thank you for sharing another wonderful rail journey. I'm rather excited to be returning to Japan in two weeks with train journeys planned from Tokyo to Nagano, Kyoto and Kinosaki Onsen!

昨年、函館本線の小樽~長万部間を乗った時、私はずっと前面展望でかぶり付きで観てました。中国山地縦貫の芸備線や姫新線も乗ってみたいです。この映像が過去帳にならないように。いいもの観させていただきました😂。ありがとうございました。

JR西日本赤字路線ワースト1位の路線(備後落合ー東城)ですね。三江線も廃止されたことだし、いつ廃止になってもおかしくない。ということで、昨年、広島から津山に帰るときに乗車してきました。キハ120ならではのパノラマカー張りの前面展望。アドベンチャーワールドのような路線風景にワクワクしました。新見からはこれも赤字路線第10位の姫新線(新見ー中国勝山間)に乗車してきました。こちらは、多少開けてるかな w キハ120は、かぶりつきだと本当に良く見えます(ただし、立ち見)。

The English speakers who posted here don’t know how serious this railroad is. It only carries 10 person in average in a whole day. JR West Japan has started talking with the local governments about this railroad’s future. If it is continually not being used, a decision of its End Of Life may happen.

芸備線は三次駅、備後落合駅で運転系統が別れています。 庄原市内を抜ける(備後庄原~備後落合駅~東城駅)2時間半以上掛かります。 利用促進等は机上の空論です。庄原市役所前から東城駅前まで高速バスで40分 三次駅~備後落合駅 46km 1時間20分掛かります。1日5本 三次駅~備後庄原駅 22km 35分 備後庄原駅~備後落合駅 24km 44分 備後落合駅~新見駅 51km 1時間半掛かります。1日3本 備後落合駅~東城駅 30km 50分 東城駅~新見駅 20km 40分

In 2001 we were in Osaka and one Saturday in the fall in inquired about going out into the countryside by rail to a small mountain village. I took an express train to a branch line where a single track over 15 km connected several stations with many trains of different sizes going back and forth frequently. Being in the transportation field I was dubious how such a system could ever work in the US!! I was sitting in the lead car where the engineer was in a glass booth. Before getting a green signal he raised his hand with a white glove over his head and then gradually lowered it acknowledging that he had seen the signal and could proceed. I wondered why? Then it dawned on me that an inspector might be hiding in the bushes unseen and if he didn't see the engineer give the white glove signal it would be all over! Perfect safety record!!

The "pointing and calling" technique is a well-known industrial safety practice that just happens to have been adopted by the Japanese railway. By associating a physical and verbal action with a safety-related observation point, the mental processes associated with that observation become more reliable, and instances of human error are reduced. It has nothing to do with a potential inspector by the lineside, but is a habit ingrained into drivers during their training. The single most significant reason why Japanese-style railway operations don't occur in America is because American railways are, almost without exception, prioritised for freight operations. Japanese and European railways give priority to passenger operations; if a freight train conflicts with a passenger train, it is the freight that must be shunted aside and made to wait, not the other way around. This allows for much better adherence to the timetable.

Japan has some of the best infrastructure on the planet. It's why they're among the best places to live. As an American who's never ridden a train, we need this. We need high speed rail. Japan is the undisputed king of East Asia. The only thing they really need right now is immigrants. Japan needs open borders to immigrants. Lucky for Japan they have more than enough luxuries to convince people to move there. Long live the land of the rising sun.

The train, houses and surrounds remind one of a Studio Ghibli movie. Having said that parts of the line must be a big maintenance headache with regards to clearance and removal of tree growth.

4:06~4:37までは橋梁です 木がないとかっこいいんですけどねー 木がないとみえるんですが、そのあたりで牛舎があります そこでとれた牛乳や、季節の山菜や野菜をつかったアイス屋さんがあります おいしいんでぜひ行ってみてください。といっても芸備線では無理ですね

例えば、JR西日本のスタンプラリーとか、何かのイベントでは、京阪神の駅ではなく、こういう赤字路線の途中駅とかにスタンプ設置したり、或いは駅前の店を利用したりしたらポイントが付く・・・とか言う企画をやったりして、『乗ってもらう人を増やす』様にすべきだと思う。 とりあえず『乗ってもらう』ことで、沿線の景色の素晴らしさとかを『知ってもらい』、そうすれば『また利用したくなる』とか『こんな田舎に住んでみたい』とかで路線利用者を増やしていかないと。 とにかくJRは、私鉄と違って『儲け方を知らない』。私鉄は、利益がないなら増やそうと努力する、JRは利益がないなら切り捨てる。営業努力がなさすぎる。国鉄から民間になっても考え方は『お国の公務員の知能レベル』。だからやる気がなくて株価も下がる。

以前、この近くに住んでいましたが、仕事で忙しくついに乗る機会ないまま、転勤しました。周辺人口少なく、車中心の生活であれば利用者が少なくなってしまうのは仕方がないと思いますが、こんな素晴らしい景色の路線はぜひ残して欲しいです(収益の問題が大きいでしょうが・・・)試験的に、蒸気機関車、いや、設備が大変ですね、DD51あたりのディーゼル機関車牽引で観光列車(京都のトロッコ列車的な)を走らせる、みたいな企画で都市部にアピールするってどうでしょう?
