The Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden is a magnificent 207-hectare park that opened in 2010 as part of the Shanghai Expo. It’s located within the Shanghai Sheshan National Tourist Resort and is a collaborative effort between the Shanghai municipal government, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the National Forestry and Grassland Administration.
The garden is divided into four functional areas: the central exhibition, plant conservation, five continents plant area, and a peripheral buffer zone. It features over 20 specialized gardens, including the East China Botanical Area, the Pit Garden, and the Rock and Medicinal Plant Garden2. The Chenshan Mountain within the park is a conservation area for indigenous plants and includes an exhibition greenhouse, which is the largest in China, covering 12,608 square meters.
This botanical garden not only serves as a green resource for the city but also as a new center for plant science, with a focus on East China’s urbanized environment. It has become a popular public attraction with three spectacular glasshouses, a calendar of festivals, and 26 themed areas. The garden also has a significant educational program for children and teenagers and is actively involved in plant science research and conservation initiatives.
