City Walks, hello, Utah resident here. The large white building, next to the Temple that google id’d as The Beehive House is actually The Joseph Smith Memorial Building. Built in the 19th century and named Hotel Utah, it was considered the most luxurious hotel west of the Mississippi River for quite some time. In the 1980’s(?) it was slated for demolition and rebuilding but when the local citizenry expressed their love of this beautiful structure the owners instead gutted and renovated it, retaining some of the grandeur of the original hotel while converting the building into mixed use spaces. There are now three restaurants open to the public, office spaces, theaters, conference/meeting halls, dance halls, learning spaces, and free and easy access to the world’s largest genealogical databases within this beautiful structure. The top floor boasts both eastern and western viewing windows with magnificent views of Temple Square, Salt Lake City and the surrounding valley, and the beautiful Rocky Mountains. It is especially popular during the Christmas season to view the lights from these windows. Although all three restaurants have varied, and delicious, cuisine The Garden restaurant on the top floor has the added enticement of enjoying the fresh air through their retractable roof on fine days. The Beehive House is a smaller residential building on the east side of The JSMB which has been renovated and offers some of the city’s most sought after home style cooking. The Lion House Rolls are a particular favorite for many of those who have had the good fortune of indulging in them. Each of these buildings are filled with history and are staffed by happy people willing to discuss their stories with any who inquire. Thank you.

Fun fact. 23:20 That building was the original ZCMI Department store, started by the Utah pioneers. Each year, just before the Christmas season, the windows were covered so the staff could prepare the Christmas Window Display’s. Every year they were different, and filled with the magic, nostalgia, and wonder of Christmas. The mannequin’s and sales displays were replaced with Christmas joy and the people Loved it! This tradition was much anticipated every year, and many families incorporated “visiting the ZCMI windows into their Christmas traditions. Some families would gather round the windows and watch as the covers revealed their wonders, while others watched the reveal on the news each year, and then visited later in the season. Thank you.

City Walks, that building was not the State Genealogical Library, that was part of the wold’s largest genealogical library, also belonging to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Genealogy is tremendously important for their people, and they freely share this information with those who desire it, even partnering with other genealogical societies such as Ancestry.com.
