Exactly, I would much rather hear an honest, trustworthy, review than one that glosses over the issues. If its not a top version so be it, I will wait for a price drop if its a 'nice to have' remaster rather than a 'must have', its a shame as I was looking forward to this, but as there is no Atmos soundtrack I can wait a little while longer to get it at a cheaper price.

It's just the way he talks. He sounds very polite. Maybe he's "sorry" because he knew how much the fans were looking forward to finally getting The Goonies in 4K, and this isn't the best transfer. It's like he's saying, "Sorry to be the bearer of bad news." He knows this less-than-stellar transfer isn't what everyone was hoping for, so in essence, he's saying, "Sorry guys, but they could've done a little better on this one."

The thing is everyone is going to have their own point of view. If I listened to a every review I've ever seen/read, I would have missied out on some great releases. An opinion is just an opinion and differs from person to person. I agree with his Beetlejuice review, the picture and sound is top notch. Haven't seen The Goonies yet though. Havent agreed with many of his reviews though, like Gremlins etc... What I'm trying to say is, look at many reviews and even then, maybe give something a chance because your opinion may differ from one gents video review!

@@auiki I don't purchase a disc based upon a review. It's a factor, but the main reason why I buy a disc is because I like the movie and have a desire to watch it again, regardless of the quality (unless it's a bootleg.). I'm a collector of physical media, and that's what I've done thousands of times. That said. obviously if I have a choice of video transfer quality I'll prefer to purchase the best one available at the best price, typically but not always at the time of initial release. So, more often than not I already own the title being discussed and listen to reviews to help me decide whether upgrading would be worthwhile. If I don't own a title but have seen the movie elsewhere, a review helps me decide which release available is of the best quality. I very rarely buy a title "blind." If I haven't seen a movie, I would normally stream it, watch it on regular television, etc., before I decide to add it to my library. I have no interest in owning a movie I do not like, although there are exceptions. The few times I have bought "blind" or it's not my favorite movie, is when it's generally considered a classic of the genre or a true masterpiece. That category would usually include "foreign film," (produced outside the U.S.) of which my knowledge is very weak.....

Tony Stark I remember hearing that. That a number of sound effects were changed by Burton. Due to him saying the effects in the 80’s that were available weren’t up to par. That pisses me off they messed with it. At least we should have been given the two versions.

Shawshank isn't that great on bluray - if its a bad master then we'll likely see a benefit just from a decent 2k/4K remaster on bluray.

That’s my goal. I don’t have crazy equipment that 99.9% of people cannot afford. So it’s a “realistic” review in my opinion. Does it look and sound good or not - that’s what it comes down to at the end of the day.

Exactly,and due to the fact that you have normal, good quality home theater equipment(like many of us) and not some fancy 50-100k impossible setup(just to show off) . We get a true, honest, unbiased(well, except the Jaws maybe 😋😉) review that really help us in our purchase decisions. Not to mention that I really enjoy watching your reviews, even if I'm not interested buying some of the movies. Keep it up! ✌🏻

This particular UHD doesnt have an Atmos / DTS:X soundtrack it is DTS HD 5.1, the same as the blu-ray. Generally Atmos can be carried by a Dolby Digital Plus track (lossy) or Dolby Digital TrueHD (lossless) and usually a blu-ray or UHD blu-ray will be DD TrueHD Atmos (lossless). If the soundtrack is the same on a 1080p blu-ray as a 4K UHD, e.g. if they are both the same Dolby Digital TrueHD Atmos track they will sound the same. There wont be any difference between the blu-ray and UHD blu-ray version.

Well Richard Donner directed The Goonies, Spielberg was only the co-writer and producer, but yes I get what you are saying - he has a magic touch. I don't agree with Maurice that he is overrated but he could get a bit overly sentimental at times. I was 8 in 1980 so my formative years were throughout the 80s and Spielberg was the man - his films (directed or produced) are nostalgic legendary favorites that I can always go back to. Already pre-ordered the 4K Goonies gift set so l'll chance the dark scenes Jeff mentioned and see for myself.

Not all his stuff is great - I appreciated Schindlers List but Munich just left me cold. It's an odd experience when a film about a few guys getting revenge for their country leaves you more depressed than thousands of people dying in a captivity.

Yeah man i know what ya mean i just bought a LG nanocell and i love the tv.but the hdr dims the colors and the clarity compared too having it on say the vivid or even sports setting which too me looks more realistic and vibrant, find hdr just makes it look like a regular 1080 p flatscreen

I have a Sony 4K TV that I bought 5 years ago. It’s a pre HDR television set. So yeah no HDR. But anyways I watch 4K Blu-ray Discs on that television set and the 4K Blu-ray movies look fantastic on it.

Can you not modify your HDR settings as people do with tonemapping HDR to SDR monitors/TV's?

Be careful about HDR settings on TV’s. Some have a setting that attempts to “mimic” the look of HDR on non-HDR sources. It basically “forces” the display to show the input as HDR. My Sony has that setting.

Drew DeBoise I have a Vizio Quantum X. HDR and DV look amazing. But it was an expensive tv. Before that I tried a cheaper Samsung (7100) model and I had the same experience as you. Looked horrible with hdr on. Sadly, I think unless you spend more you will get crap hdr. HDR requires high light output from the tv, and my model has nearly 3000 nits. A lot of tvs are under a 1000. Fine for SDR but shit for HDR. Good news is TVs just continue to get cheaper and better.

It is a good transfer, but sadly the transfer is entirely within the OCN, so all the effects work only gets more obvious. They should really follow the Blade Runner model and separately scan the effects and set work and then recomposite them digitally as Ridley did - the effects for Blade Runner Final Cut looked completely flawless because they went that extra mile.

@@JeffRauseo Nice! I just upgraded to an LG OLED. Overall, I love it, but I have also observed the same thing that you referred to in your Goonies review. Sometimes HDR, in dark scenes, is a lot darker than one is used to.

I did notice that - my mistake. But honestly it’s probably the same mix. I never find much difference between TrueHD and DTS MA anyway.

We watched that on crts with no issues at all..

@@TheRealJohnHooper I really miss CRT's sometimes, despite their limitations of size (well, screen size anyway). I still own a high-end Panasonic HD CRT Widescreen TV. It was one of the last, if not THE last, top-of-the-range CRT models that Panasonic released before ceasing production of CRT'S in favour of Plasma and LCD technologies. The picture quality is still stunning, quite frankly. It was extremely expensive to buy at the time, but was superior to every LCD and most Plasmas for years following its purchase. I take it out of storage occasionally just to marvel at its beauty, and for the exercise too. It weighs a hefty 80kg.
