Back on Saturday March 18th, I visited the Cajon Pass area for a few hours to test out my new camera, the Sony AX-53. Got there around 10 AM, and initially it was really slow traffic wise. After waiting a bit, the traffic from both BNSF and Union Pacific really picked up and trains were flowing left and right! Got the normal BNSF and Union Pacific action, but a CREX managed to show up on BNSF.
Union Pacific was the star of the day, sending up a military train with 2 CSX locomotives all the way from Lafayette, LA! It was heading to Yermo, and what a sight that was as it curved along and up the Cajon Pass!
I stayed mainly at Summit, which is currently undergoing some massive changes right now. Caltrans is embarking on an ambitious project to straighten out the 2 lane Highway 138. Over the next few months and into next year, Highway 138 will be closed in order to remove dirt and realign the road onto a more straight path, which includes bypassing the famous Summit overlook at Big Cut. No word on whether this location will be saved, but it's a shame it has the high chance of going away forever into history.
