I love how we as the audience got to see this from Lucci's POV. One moment Luffy is way over there, bouncing around and laughing. An eye blink later, Luffy is right in front of him with his fist already cocked back, no longer laughing, and staring at Lucci with those glowing eyes.

this is why i love Vegapunk's description of Nika so much. "The warrior of liberation, the person who plays the fool and fights as he pleases. Sun god Nika!" You can really see that in luffy. he plays around hitting when he wants to hit slowly chipping away at the enemies sanity and making them somehow drop their guard because of his stupidity and then smash them in the face when the facade drops for the fraction of a second that only the person who is seeing it head on can notice. it's almost poetic consider this has always been luffy's way of fighting and it just got turbo boosted

Honestly, this first Gear 5 transformation where he taps into it willingly for the first time might be better than when it first happened in Wano. Love this scene, it looks like a movie *EDIT* For the people saying this isn't the first time he willingly tapped into it, you're technically correct, but he really just temporarily fell out of Gear 5 due to exhaustion, and then quickly tapped back in against the same opponent. This is the first time we've seen him do it against someone not named Kaido, and it had a special feel to it.

@@ivanteoh930 If we really wanna do the brass tacks of the thing in berries Kaido fought essentially almost 15 billion berries on the roof. (obviously berries aren't always used for power but you can use it in this case) Luffy in Gear Fifth is what finally turned the tables over powering Kaido. It's difficult to say if both were fresh if Gear 5th necessarily would win outright one on one vs Kaido... but if Kaido could fight that much off - That's what Luffy is capable of now if not greater. Which seeing how Luffy deals with Kizaru and Lucci starts to make a lot more sense. He's on a completely different level.

To me the thing about gear 5 for opponents is that upon first encounter they don't take Luffy seriously on account of him laughing and smiling constantly. It throws the opponent off that their guard is lowered ever so slightly. You saw it with Rob Lucci just now and you saw it with Kaido. The first time Kaido was thrown off by the powers of a transformation that he himself stated to be "absurd". After the second transformation he was weary about gear 5 and took it seriously giving it his all up until the end. I believe that in Luffy's head when he is in this state that he completely serious but just can't express it in any way other than joy and comedy. Like a person that ate a SMILE fruit.

I kinda get where you’re coming from..........I mean, one look at those eyes, and you just know..........that if he was real, and looked at you with those eyes, he would absolutely *see* you down to your soul; all the while pinning you in place with but a stare. Add in the contrast of the pink/red with the white, and it’s just striking in a way you don’t expect. 👀 As a side note though, I will admit that it kinda also reminds me of animals with the same coloration in the same places, having a white body with red eyes..............can’t remember exactly what the condition is called though............I *want* to say albino or albinism, but I’m not sure. 🤔

I completely agree, ive read about 200 manga titles or so but this is on point, I couldn't imagine a better power up for luffy, because of what Nika represents in the one piece world but more than that, what one piece represents to our world, which is a show that since the beginning was meant to be a nonsensical comedy shoe that makes us laugh 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

I was just watching clips of the original fights between Luffy and Crocodile, then came back to watch this. The key thing I noticed is that when luffy fights someone at this stage, it feels like HE is the boss fight now. The roles are completely reversed, he's truly an emperor now and both Oda and the animators know that. Holy moly.

Advanced Haki, Gear 5, Toon Force, and hero plot armor. Imu is going down by the end of One Piece. Koby will play a main part in the reform of the marines and the world government. Pirates will be given bounties based on actual crimes instead of who Imu wants dead. (A lot of depictions of Imu show them as a man but I think they're a woman. Not that it changes much either way. Just what I think.) Luffy will be pardoned for every crime he did even though most were negligible. The One Piece needs Joyboy to be activated and is most likely a weapon or defense mechanism of some sorts, or I could also see it being a giant ship that is hilarious for some reason or another. I mean if it's a giant ship, they have Zunesha destroy reverse mountain then park the Island right there and no devil fruit users besides Luffy can go there. Luffy would be pretty much invincible and it would be pretty funny. (Imu can't access the Island because Joyboy created the island and sets the laws on it. So he barred devil fruits users from being able to access it so Imu would have a lot harder time getting a marine crue out there. Considering the most powerful marines aside from Garp are always devil fruit users. That's also why they wanted the Nika devil fruit so bad because they know something about the One Piece. That's what leads me to believe the One Piece is something very powerful. The reason Roger couldn't use it or take it with him is because it needs Joyboy to be activated.) Luffy will destroy reverse mountain with Zunesha, allowing easier access to the Grand Line and Fishman Islanders be free to come to the surface. Luffy is considered the hero of the world, pirates are kept in line by followers of his morales and a reformed marines.

@@parodyze Oooh yeah. There's still so much to cover by the end of the anime. I know Oda said he wanted to wrap things up in 5 years or so 2 years ago but I think the manga keeps going for another 5 years from now and the anime probably takes 7 years to finish.

He also said that he wanted to wrap things up quicker before the end of Wano Arc and Egghead arc dropped. I think One Piece has become more popular than ever since those arcs. I mean Wano was my favorite arc so far and Egghead is shaping up to be just as good.

It would be much better if Oda used a new form of Gear 4th to fight Lucci instead of Gear 5. After all not everyone is Kaido. And Lucci will never be able to have a power like Kaido. It's like Oda acknowledge that Lucci has a fighting level of a Yonko when Luffy used Gear 5 on him.

This isn’t it at all. The fight between them is a total beat down. Luffy needed an opponent to test his new abilities on, like in Fishman island where he fights after a timeskip.

Gear 5th is pretty much all of the forms combined, so there is no real need for them.

@@WaffleOnWafffle Not tested? Dude he fought with that form with Kaido for a long time, don't compare normal humans to them. Luffy should already be familiar with his power. It's a body instinct for genius fighters. And do u think that his gear 4th has only 3 forms? There are countless animals in Ruskaina island. He should had forms for all counter effective on different creatures. And besides it's like you will fight a weaker opponent with full level account. It's a shonen show, most protagonist fights with enemy with the same power level or MC power level is below the opponent, then he power up after losing. You get what I meant?

This scene was so great, all that build up from the transformation and hype, then with the usual ending episode theme playing louder and louder, for a one piece watcher we are conditioned that it usually means its going to be a cliff hanger to the episode, but then the director masterfully used that trait against us, by not playing the final two beats that we associate with the end, followed with an immediate silence, with the slow panning shot of luffy approaching lucci. *Chefs kiss* THEY COOKED

A lot of the time light shows like that are just for intimidating but luffy’s is one of the rare ones where you just know he means business.
