National Guard troops arrived in Los Angeles on Day 5, charged with re-establishing law and order during the observance of protests held to demand justice in the 5/25/20 murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis. While looters and arsonists ransacked Santa Monica retailers today, utterly outnumbered and overwhelmed police watched from behind gates, helpless to intercede effectively. Meanwhile, California's National Guard troops patrolled Los Angeles streets in the skid row area, where no outwardly evident crime was taking place. NG troops have not been called to restore order in California since the 1992 protests that followed a police attack on Rodney King.

Generally the NG will stand a static position for securing and protection of buildings, infrastructure, etc. Clearing people out of an area forcibly is not a primary job/tasking for them. Police may clear an area with CS, OC, non-lethal and force the crowd back, the NG will then hold the ground. Use of weapons is restricted to self defense only, or defense of others who are in immediate danger of death or serious bodily harm. Gas masks allow them to work the area as the police clear it. While they CAN be used to physically clear people from an area, it generally is only as a last resort, and for rioters causing damage and not just to close down a protest.

Georgia and Texas would have to disagree with you there. California has the highest budget but all three states are pretty damn close in terms of equipment. As far as training goes... There's a reason the Georgia Guard was chosen as the pilot for the new Army program that combines active duty and National Guard units. When I was in we had the best performance record in the nation. That came straight from the National Guard Bureau and big Army.

One weekend a month. The training is not efficient and I wish us national guard soldiers trained not only for deployments but for fires, earthquakes , riots and other national disasters.
