4K Review: Mateba 6 Unica semi-auto revolver

This is a redo of my shameful review of the Mateba 6 Unica from 5 years ago, this time in high-res 4K. These innovative revolvers have a unique semi-automatic mechanism that cocks the hammer for you. Are these really worth the $3000 (and more) they command at auction these days, or are they just a silly gimmick "answer to a question nobody asked" like I hear all too often?

I think a big part of it early on was that you use less steel with a 12 o'clock barrel. The Chiappa Rhino uses a lot of aluminum to save cost & weight, plus it has a rather complex hammer mechanism. Mostly, I think the 12 o'clock barrel is just a tradition at this point.

@@JustaThing for me it was when i saw it in Ghost in the Shell as Togusa's Revolver. i'm not even a big "Gun Guy", but the minute i saw the Unica it just made an impact, like the first time a young kid sees a vintage Chevy Camaro or Corvette Stingray. it's like if Dirty Harry was Robocop, this would be his gun. honestly, if i could justify spending the cash on one, i don't care it's a museum piece you can't find parts for anymore, i'd make this my EDC in a shoulder holster. "you must be processing, 'did he fire 5 rounds, or 6'? you've got to file one query: 'Do i estimate the statistics are favorable?' Well, go ahead Punk-bot, MAKE MY REFRESH CYCLE."

having the barrel at the 6 o'clock puts the recoil force more in line with your arm, which reduces the lever action that comes from having the recoil energy further from your arm (written at like 1am so sorry if that made no sense)

Speaking of the Chiappa Rhino, their 200DS is a terrific little 2-inch .357 Magnum. The 6 o'clock barrel significantly reduces both recoil and muzzle flip which insures subsequent shots to be on target faster than ever before, even with the use of ultra light alloys used in the construction of the Rhino. The flat sided cylinder design of the Rhino reduces the typical revolver profile allowing greater concealment. Featuring both double and single action characteristics, the single action is actuated by a hammer cocking device that engages the unexposed hammer to prepare to fire. This hammer-cocker is stiff and a bit awkward, so the DAO model is fine, too. I switched the small soft rubber grips for medium laser-etched walnut grips and they feel and fit much better. The wood grips go better with the brown form-fitting leather holster. I really like the machined aluminum speed-loaders, but they cost extra, too. Like Italian sports cars, the Rhino can cost you on accessories! I am worried about reports of the delicate hammer assembly that looks more clockwork than gun, so I rarely fire my Rhino. Practice with my solid Ruger revolvers, instead.

My lady likes to be naked when I hold her. I couldn't bear the thought of somebody putting clothes on their revolver. They really don't need anything in that game. Or at least I found the iron sights to be satisfactory. I mean it's not like it's the G36 iron sights with the circle that has everything else blocked out around it. Or the AR variants that always have the front post present even though it's very easy to remove it. I think the M60 would have to be one of the worst offenders in my honest opinion

To me, it allows a faster fire rate while being rather accurate. Double actions have heavy triggerpull and long travel, which can throw off your aim.

if the grips breaking during shooting is and issue, get the rubber ones for shooting, and all the complex stuff is going to hold up as long you maintain the gun. If it brakes it is expensive paper weight, but if you dont shoot it and do not enjoy it, it is just the same as it would be not functioning. Well except the resale value, but somehow i think you are not planning to sell it :)

I met Emilio in Pavia and I shoot in his converted shooting range behind the pasta and ice cream machines, I shot my beretta 9m and I shot also his prototypes, it was 1993. I have good memories and in my opinion, he was a gun genius! his guns way outmatched my berettas 9m, thye were a long shot better and really smooth.

+Crylhound The one used in Ghost in The Shell is the 2006m 1:49 not the Unica 6 since they came out closer to the release of the movie.

+TheBigOne0305 In the 1995 movie and S.A.C anime, Togusa's Mateba is a Unica 6 frame (which doesn't 'cover' the cylinder) with a 2006M front-end and hammer. In the Innocence movie it's a 2006M lookalike. They are DA/SA in both cases.

So could you simply rack the gun back like a standard 9 mm pistol after a reload or coming out of a holster? It's curious thought really, not really expecting it to seem like an effective way to operate the gun.

Hey Potato. Not sure if you were aware, but Mateba is currently doing a third production run on the Model 6 Unica! If you need replacement parts, or want to buy a new one (for FAR cheaper than you paid to buy one off a previous owner) direct from the manufacturer and stock up on replacement parts, now's the time to do it.
