Rolex is 'The King' right? But how does a $4K Rolex compare to a watch from the Lidl Supermarket which cost just $4. The result might surprise you.
In this video UK watchmaker Richard Perrett does a detailed comparative analysis of the $4K Rolex Lady Datejust and the $4 Lidl Auriol ladies watch.

As far as I recall Auriol is Lidl's own brand name and they always were pretty good time pieces. I bought one way back when they first introduced them. I think mine was more like £12 to £13 and I bought it as a daily beater when I was working within a busy engineering environment, so it was put through watch hell and it survived for at least 10 years, always keeping good time and remained dry inside. What surprized me most of all was the glass crystal never showed any signs of being scratched. The only reason could have been that they used some kind of Gorilla glass. It must be said that these £3.99 versions do look that they are built less well than mine, but you get what you pay for and I think they are certainly fit for purpose. OK it will never be a family heirloom but it isn't meant to be. Your scoring was extremely biased, but you can be forgiven for that. Practicality, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.

This video inspired me to start my five dollar watch collection. Instead of arbitrarily dismissing a watch because of price, I take time to look at it and see what caught my eye. The novelty of what was impossible a hundred years ago, dismissed now because "cheap". So, big numbers tops the list. My first "5 dollar" watch that I took time to wear I realized I could read the time without squinting. And it had 24 hour format under the 12 hours. A better band, screw down crown, better movement...now I want to make a watch.

One thing I noticed is the quartz movement in the Lidl watch is a Seiko. That makes this watch amazing value for money - that movement is present in watches costing 50x the price. Most very cheap watches have cheap Chinese clone movements. The Seiko movement, while basic, should run reliably for a decade or more, and a compete replacement can be bought for 1/10th the price of a basic service on any automatic device.

Even with no jewels, those cheap quartz (Epson) movements can run for decades as long as you don't let it sit with dead leaky batteries in it, and since we're all watch enthusiasts, fill the cheap quartz with mineral oil and you'll have (literally) lifetime lube plus an additional bonus waterproof down to several hundred meters more.

At first, I wondered how the Rolex dealer could have known on sight that you weren't going be buying one of his Rolex watches. Then I spotted the red Komandirskie you're sporting on your wrist and thought I understood the possibility he then knew you had no need of a Rolex, lol. I'm still waiting for my red Komandirskie to arrive. I've already received a nice new red and white NATO band in preparation (appreciate the tip). Thanks for all you do for the craft of watchmaking. Just finished watching. When I saw title was thinking this is a complete joke, however I think you gave a very real comparision keeping in mind the differences in price and how that affects the choice of materials and level of engineering possible. I do think your resilence score was a little low for the Supermarket watch. To survive the pressure tank at that price was impressive. Really enjoying your content, new subcriber looking forward to watching more on your channel.

Thanks for the interesting and useful review - brilliant. The Auriol caught my eye when doing my weekly food shop and I bought three for my granddaughter. I had to do it as she loves anything shiny, her favourite colour is blue and she loves swimming and messing about in water. I'm certain she would choose the Auriol ever the Rolex every time, but I suspect once she gets into her teens her views will have changed. It's a shame we all have to grow up and get boring. Now subscribed to your excellent channel.

As far as accuracy goes, I don't want to have to adjust my watches between putting them forward or backwards for winter and summer time. That meant having to keep up with a school running on radio controlled clocks and be within half a minute. My budget Lorus managed that, my house pendulum clocks manage it, (they're very good ones.) a Rolex would struggle.

a very fun video, the Auriol has a rehaut that's way too deep and plastic and just doesn't look right, while the Rolex has a date magnifier that's way to big and takes away from the elegance of symmetry and simplicity and just doesn't look right. the Auriol would look better with a shiny matching blue woven nylon band, the Rolex would look better with a traditional Oyster (not Jubilee, not President) band. The Auriol is clearly a "barbie" watch and it is *perfect* for that role, the Rolex is clearly a "luxury" watch and is *perfect* for that role. IMHO, YMMV 🙂!!! PS, there's something wrong with the explanation of the water pressure test, if the watches are sealed they can't have any high pressure air in them before you submerge them, they must have first leaked air into them during pressurization, and then leaked that pressurized air out after you submerged them.

Always a pleasure to find someone who cares and is polite especially on KZfaq :-) Not to worry I'm confident that pretty much all great videos start off like yours. Since you enjoyed the last one here is some more of my two cents worth. I used to admire Rolex but no more. The value just isn't there. I would much rather buy from a small startup or different company. All together too many watch snobs in the Rolex camp. If I start hearing that Rolex cheerleaders can recognize that the Invicta Pro Diver with nh35 movement is in fact a good value and a real watch I might change my tune. In fact anytime there's an ultra-strong leaning to one manufacturer over all others I question it. There are many many stars in the watchmaking firmament. I prefer vintage fully jeweled automatic movements from 50 or 60 years ago. I have many such watches that when serviced keep very nearly chronometer level accuracy. That is a testament to the design and workmanship no question. The fact that non-working gems can be had for 20 to 50 Canadian dollars doesn't hurt either! I got myself some good oils ultrasonic cleaner jug of lighter fluid and a free timing app for my phone and I'm off to the races!

A more absurd, indeed biased comparison I did not witness in a long time. But amusing it was. BTW, what is it with clucky clucky ratchety bezels? Where did this unanimous opinion of the absolute necessity of this feature come from? Diving watches I had in the 1960-1970 time did not have this feature. And we went diving quite well and no one drowned for lack of clicking. Just curious... Oh, the soviets were not famous for diving prowess, but managed just fine with these very ratchetless Vostok. I wonder how. Keep on producing these shows, Sir. They are educational. And I enjoy them.

I normally love your videos but this one was hard to take. You are not comparing apples with apples. These watches are about as far apart as they get in nearly every respect save for one...they both tell the time. One of them is a posh piece of engineering only available to the rich or noveau rich. The other can be bought by a person on benefits. Here's the bottom line... They both tell the time with accuracy. The cheap watch is actually more accurate. The cheap watch will probably give its owner ten or so years of service before the nylon train gives up the ghost (maybe even longer) and will not cause heartache and distress if stolen, lost or damaged. The cheapy is waterproof to a reasonable level and it is quite presentable in finish. So I suppose this is like comparing a Roller to a Ford Mondeo. Both do the job, both are fit for purpose...one is more for showing off and, really, will transport you in similar comfort to the Mondeo. Personally, although I respect the Rolex brand and engineering I'd be just as happy with a Seiko or Citizen automatic. Many watches in my collection are quartz and they beat the pants off my mechanical watches. My most accurate watch is actually my smartwatch.

No mention of the 3-year warranty on the Auriol? -- Lidl do actually honour their warranties
@andrewallen9993
@andrewallen9993 2 жыл бұрын
Rolex had to increase their warranty in 2015 as Auriol's warranty exceeded theirs by a whole year! And of course Lidl doesn't quibble over the misuse or third party maintenance clauses like Rolex does to get out of replacing watches that no longer function as advertised.

Fun, I'm glad you gave the plastic watch some respect... I have a couple of Rolex watches, and yet I love some of my cheap plastic watches.

Store of value for the Auriol should be a lot higher, as it can't really lower than 3.99, the cost of a cup of coffee. Look and value are most subjective and in a way the scores are a subjective comparison. In some way Brand value seems to be more powerful than any engineering excellency in terms of value.

This is so tongue in cheek, only English can make it and understand it. The video is a bit long, but I enjoyed it. These cheap watches are of course just OK and when the battery goes, so does the watch, because a battery replacement cost here at the Costa Blanca € 4,- and so does a new watch. But there is another good side of these watches. You can use the battery inside to replace the battery of a good quartz watch. This is how it works. Your Seiko quartz needs a new battery. You go to the market and buy a new watch for 4 euro's. You take out the battery, put it in the Seiko and it runs for another two years. You put the empty battery back in the Chinese watch you just bought and the next week, you go back to the market and tells the guy, that the new watch you just bought stopped. You then get just another watch and don't have to give back the 'broken' one. So now you have 2 brand new watches and two batteries for the same price as a replacement battery.... Everybody happy.

The Lidl watch you tested is a copy of (homage to, if you will...) a Chinese-made watch by the Belgian brand Ice watch which costs £65. www.ice-watch.com/en/watch/ice-sixty-nine-turquoise-small-014763 I like the fact that you looked at a cup-of-coffee priced watch.

Hi Xavier Ghazi ... this feedback is very valuable. Truth is I am just a watchmaker that figured it would be fun to start videoing what I do and I am currently pretty rubbish at it. I do want to get better and because of this feedback and a few other similar comments I have decided to try and stick to about 25 minutes and plan out much more carefully what Goes into each video which, as you noticed I don't currently do. I just turn the camera on and start talking. Thanks for this honest feedback. The raw truth is almost always a valuable thing. Richard

I’m not sure what is plastic, but I remember Rolex suffered criticism in the early days online over it. May have been the Explorer. But certain plastics, I’ve heard are the best materials for cogs. The person running plastic down may not have been aware of it’s benefits.

Yes the Rolex is much nicer than the other one but you're talking about a 4,000 dollar watch compared to a 4.00 dollar watch so the 4,000 dollar watch is going to be a lot better than the 4.00 watch so if you can afford to pay 4,000 dollars than you would probably be more prone to buying the Rolex and if you can't afford the 4,000 dollar watch than you are probably going to be more prone to buying the 4.00 watch!!!
