Art for art's sake. A well-balanced intelligent and artful conversation is so rare on the small screen. I had a friend who played a couple of parts on DS-9 under the name Chris Latta, I believe. When I knew him back east he was a method actor, which used to freak me out when he was in character.

The problem with DS9 was that it wasn't the only Trek show being produced, with TNG running at the top of it's game and the first series of DS9 being a bit directionless, it got a bad rep. The later seasons were fantastic though, leading into the war with the dominion. DS9 was a lot darker than most Trek series but still carried across all the lofty goals of the Federation, but just on the brink of war.

This was one of the most powerful interactions between these two characters in the whole series. You get whole volumes of both of their respective cultures in the things they do and don't say, in the silences, the looks...the shared humor in this one little moment of cross-species understanding, and the shared horror of the situation they're facing in the greater story outside of this scene. I'm glad the writers let the actors perform their lines the way they saw the scene. It truly gave great depth to not only the characters, the scene, and the overall plot setting, but to the entire Star Trek universe...plus a little HFY moment, with the aliens' perspective being, "they are truly weird...but they are also wonderful in their own way."

More than that in this scene. The way they describe it is entirely within the expectations for their respective species. For Quark, he looks at it thinking commercially, considering the consumer’s interests. “What would draw a customer to this? Why would a customer like or hate this? How do I maximize sales?” It’s all about selling points, qualities, service. For Garak, he’s looking with the eye of a spy. “What is its purpose? How is it being used? Who is using it?” He sees it like a weapon, like he’s analyzing lethality, effective dose, area of effect. This is why they got picked for their roles: they’re really, REALLY good at getting into their characters’ heads.

God I love this scene. Really paints the federation in a different light. It shows how it's scene from an outside perspective.
@Saintbow
@Saintbow 6 ай бұрын
It only "paints in a different light" from these two point of views because their moral compass is very messed up. You have one who's greed is unmatched, who would sell his own mother for a profit, and would happily cheat everyone just as long as he made money off of it. The other is a former/current operative, who would have a friendly lunch with you one day, and would assassinate you after dinner on the next day. He would be more emotional over losing a lunch buddy, versus being upset over killing you. Even though he says he's been "kicked out" of anything Cardassian and can't even go back to Cardassia, he still fights secrete battles for Cardassia. These two represent everything the Federation is not, and to them, that is vile and insidious.
@joeclaridy
@joeclaridy 6 ай бұрын
@@SaintbowI will have to disagree with you. Yes, Quark exhibits the worst of capitalism and will sell his mother out for profit. I would pose to you that the Federation is no different when you look at their actions with citizens from Dorvan V and the DMZ. In both cases the Federation offered their homes and was willing to force their own citizens out to appease a foe that was weaker all in the name of peace. If the Federation had the resolve, they would've soundly defeated the Cardassians in the Border Wars but they didn't which came back to bite them in the Dominion War. For the Federation it was more important to be morally superior and save face than it was to defeat their enemies. Hell, Sisko fought his mentor to prevent a coup just for him to go overboard a season later and attack his fellow citizens homeworlds with chemical weapons. And hw faced no consequences for that. In Garak's case its simple, Section 31. Show me any episode were Section 31 was involved and they played it by the book. Even if you discount Section 31, again Sisko aided and abbeded the murder of one Romulan Senator and one convict just to drag Romulus into the war against the Dominion, a war the Federation started. The Admiralty was complicit and framing their most famous Captain in the aftermath of Praxis destruction just to keep the Federation and Klingons as enemies. To me the Federation is the best option in a dangerous galaxy. Does that mean they're the good guys, no it just mean they're the best option.

Yeah I really enjoyed Quark too. Not sure he was my favorite character, but definitely up there. I think my favorite part about him was how he viewed business, and his bar especially, reflected his outlook on life. To him, "paradise" was a full bar, people drinking, laughing, playing games, having a good time, nobody fighting, just, being entertained. Sure he was making a profit, but I remember one episode, I think after the Dominion took over but I can't recall. But the bar was barely populated by anyone. And he's just sitting there, depressed. Not because he wasn't making money (at least no ONLY because of that), but because it just wasn't fun. He didn't want to spend his days like that. He wanted to be surrounded by dancers, music, the rattle of the dabbo table. The cries of victory and loss as lady luck flitted about the bar. And him, at the center of it, enjoying the spectacle around him. To him, THAT was a good day, a good life. He didn't want to hurt people to make money. He saw no need for it, when there we SO many ways to make money that didn't require violence. Just give people what they want....and they will happily pay you for the chance. And I found that really profound about him, from a character perspective.

Those 3 shows were the end of the middle generation of Star Trek. Unfortunately I doubt anything like these 3 shows can ever be made nowadays. The classic episodes of these 3 series sometimes there was no right choice, open discussion among fans was required whether the choices on screen that were made were correct, or were the Federation betraying its own ideals...And it didn't require one lens flare, one explosion (on screen) or action sequence, it just required top notch character acting.

It is an interesting little fact most Americans probably won't know that root beer isn't really very popular outside of the US. I'm in the UK and it can be tricky and expensive to get hold of. And nobody else I know likes it.

@@ArchieRatsworthI'll one up you on that. No, two or three. I have sassafras on my family property. We harvest the Roots from it to make tea. Sassafras tea was the first, then sasparilla (yes, it's a real thing and no, it's not root beer), and then root beer. Yes, sassafras does have side effects...strictly digestive though. Coca hasn't been in Coca-Cola since the very early 20th century.

It's technically two scenes but: "That's why you came to me isn't it Captain? Because you knew that I could do those things that you were capable of doing. Well, it worked. And you'll get what you wanted: a war between the Romulans and the Dominion. And if your conscience is bothering you, you should soothe it with the knowledge that you may have just save the entire Alpha Quadrant! And all it cost was the life of one Romulan Senator....one criminal....and the self-respect of one Starfleet Officer. I'd call that a bargain." Smash cut to: "So I lied. I cheated, I bribed men to cover the crimes of other men. I am an accessory to murder! But the most damning thing of all? I think I can live with it. And if I had to do it all over again? I would. Garak was right about one thing, a guilty conscience is a small price to pay for the security of the entire Alpha Quadrant. So I will learn to live with it....because I CAN live with it......I can LIVE with it....Computer, erase that entire personal log." Smash cut to black.

I also submit: "What of Bajor? You cannot tell me Bajor doesn't concern you! You have sent the Bajorans Orbs and Emissaries- you have encouraged them to create an entire religion around YOU! You even told me once that you were 'of Bajor'- so don't you tell me that you're "not concerned with corporeal matters!" I do not want to see Bajor destroyed. Neither do you- but we all know that is exactly what's going to happen if the Dominion takes over the Alpha Quadrant. You say you don't want me to sacrifice my life? Well FINE! - neither do I! You want to be Gods? Then BE GODS! I need a miracle, Bajor needs a miracle- STOP. THOSE. SHIPS!" "We are of Bajor." "But what of The Sisko?" "He is intrusive" "He tries to control the game" "A penance must be exacted." "It is agreed." "The Sisko is of Bajor...but he will find no rest there." "His pagh will follow another path."
