今回はアルプスの絶景。「世界一美しい湖畔の街」と称されるハルシュタット。オーストリア・ザルツカンマーグート地方の奥地、標高500mほどの湖のほとりに位置しています。
わずかな土地で暮らすのは約900人。それでも3000年も前からの歴史を誇っているのです。雄大な山々に抱かれる、小さく、そして静かな街。
湖畔の断崖に、へばりつくようにあるハルシュタットでは、狭い土地を有効利用するように建物の多くは3〜4階建て。この街のユニークな地形を生んだのは、背後に迫るアルプス・ダッハシュタイン連峰の氷河でした。
そして、ハルシュタットのあるザルツカンマーグート地方。その名は「塩の宝庫」を意味します。岩塩が採れたことで3000年もの間、栄えてきたのです。塩は金にも等しい価値があり「白い黄金」と呼ばれました。
さらに、もうひとつの見所と言えば、ミニSLで登るシャーフベルク登山鉄道です。麓から登っていくと、景色がどんどん変わっていって、徐々に周囲が見えていく様子が楽しいです。美しいアルプスの山と湖が織りなす景観は、一見の価値があります。

This time, a spectacular view of the Alps. Hallstatt is called “the most beautiful lakeside town in the world.”
It is located on the shore of a lake at an altitude of about 500 meters, deep in the Salzkammergut region of Austria. Only about 900 people live in Hallstatt on a tiny piece of land. Yet it boasts a history dating back 3,000 years. It is a small and quiet town nestled in majestic mountains. With beautiful footage, we present the scenery of life here that has been preserved over the years.
Hallstatt is perched on a cliff by the lake. Most of the buildings are three to four stories high to make the most of the narrow land. The town’s unique topography was created by the glaciers on the peaks of the Alps’ Dachstein massif that loom behind it.
The Salzkammergut region is where Hallstatt is located. The name means “treasure house of salt.” It flourished for 3,000 years because of the mining of rock salt. Salt had been as valuable as gold and was called “white gold.”
Another attraction is the Schafberg Mountain railway, a mini-steam locomotive that climbs up the mountain. As you climb up from the foot of the mountain, the scenery changes rapidly, and it is fun to see the surroundings gradually come into view. The sight of the beautiful Alpine mountains and lakes is well worth seeing.
