4K Quality - Simple install of a tarp over a swag. I've never seen anyone do this and there are not other videos on this subject on You tube.
I would definitely recommend this set up because when it's hot, or raining you can pack your swag and ground mesh up while undercover.
I store the poles and tarp in a simple canvas pole bag.
I'll be running this set up from now on because the extra 5 minutes set up and pack down in worth it in my view.
If you are a swag camper, do you use a tarp? Why do you use a tarp? Why do you not use a tarp? Let us know in the comments.
Thanks for watching.

I have looked for something like this as well. This then pops up. Great idea. I had a swag on a stretcher which is very comfy but when it rains the water pools along the bottom seam of my swag which is all canvas. Result is wet bedding. Thanks for the video

Only a select few make these videos. And like you, I've been searching for days only found you and another guy. Thank you! I've done a slight modification of your setup and instead of using a spread bar, I use a ridgeline and only use 2 poles. I'll nee 2 trees for this set up though. I'm on a motorcycle and packing light is a MUST! :D

Looks great. That's exactly what I had in mind when I got my tarp gear to add to my kit - less the cross bar. But that looks like a good idea. You're right noone else has done a video on it. I thought it was just a random idea I had because I don't like packing up wet gear 🤣
@AdventureCampingAustralia
@AdventureCampingAustralia 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Katherine, it really does work well, particularly when you leave camp early. I don't mind throwing a wet tarp in the vehicle. At $50 it's easily cleaned if it get's moldy. Much better than risking packing up the expensive swag wet!

G'day mate, big fan of a tarp over my swag. Why deal with packing away a wet swag if you can avoid it and then having to deal with it at the next stop. Subscribed, good luck with the channel 👍🏼

Very similar to my set up. Have just invested in a 7m X 5m tarp. A bit over kill, but good to be able to have 2 'walls' when the weather is bad.. Spreader bars are key.
@AdventureCampingAustralia
@AdventureCampingAustralia 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think the worse the weather the more it's worth investing the time in a larger tarp. This setup was for fine weekend camping when it's just me. I think If I was adding a 2nd swag for my wife I'd need a 6M X 3.2M tarp & if I was camping in poor weather I'd want at least 6 x 6m. I'm amazed there aren't more videos on KZfaq about putting a tarp over your swag?
@luketregear2154

I know right? It's such an important part of my kit. Have searched numerous times and I was a little surprised when I found this video. When you take half an hour to properly set up camp you can then really enjoy yourself, comfortable in the knowledge that you will be dry, warm, cool and safe from all elements. A good tarp is sooo important. You should make another vid with your 2 swag set up.
@jayoswald9632

That's basically how I set up my swag. I have a double swag for me and my wife though so it takes the majority of the area under the tarp. I don't put that middle pole in, and will set up a 2nd tarp of a similar size Infront of it, sharing the same poles to have seating and kitchen table under cover as well if we expect rain, or even dew. Curious to see why you both love the spreader bar? I've never put one up, never seen a need for it.
@AdventureCampingAustralia
@AdventureCampingAustralia 3 жыл бұрын
Hey @@jayoswald9632 thanks for your input. Hey that's a great idea adding a 2nd tarp using the same poles at the outside, I had not thought of doing that. I guess the reason for the spreader bar is to remove any sag from the tarp and provide a pitching point, granted you don't need it but I found it takes allot of the effort out of making the tarp taught.

@@jayoswald9632 sometimes I set up the tarp with a spreader either end and one in the middle. It just makes the entire thing rigid as.. I then zip tie all possible tie down points. Takes 2 mins and makes a difference.

That is a pretty slick tarp set up; how long does it take you to set up and pull down? Is it something you would do every night when touring or is it for a more semi-permanent camp of a few nights? Personally while I have a swag and it is one of the smaller ones, I don't like them as they are very bulky and awkward to get changed in if raining. Swags started out as a quick and easy form of shelter; basically the original ones were bivy bags but the fashions in vehicle based camping have allowed for hoops to be added to increase head room and foam mattresses to give comfort. End result is a humongous thing to roll up and store int he vehicle. I just prefer the tarp by itself, or lately I have been using a tarp and hammock. Which reminds me; I have a swag for sale... Thanks for adding to the body of knowledge and experience KZfaq offers.
@AdventureCampingAustralia

Hey, thanks for the support Perry; it only takes me about 10 minutes to put up both the swag and tarp. I always put the tarp up because I like that it keeps the dew off the swag so I can roll the swag up early in the morning in the dry then just roll the wet tarp up and throw it in a bag I have for the tarp. If the tarp gets mold on it, it's easy to throw it on the driveway and clean it but with the swag mold is a killer and may not be able to remove from the mattress. Each to their own but for me, the tarp goes everywhere the swag goes. Cheers.

Thanks for the video. Are you still using the same setup? Also any reason why you didn't use a cross poll at the front so you wouldn't have to have the middle pole? Thanks again.
@AdventureCampingAustralia
@AdventureCampingAustralia Жыл бұрын
Hi, yeah still using the same setup. No particular reason for not using a front cross bar other than my preference to have plenty of ropes around the outside to hold everything down. I have a few extra poles as well. Last time I set it up I ran an additional pole on each end and didn't have the center one on the outside. So long as the ropes are taught, you can't go wrong, just pick a combination that suits you and go for it.

Im still trying to work out how you put it up by yourself??? the one with the spreader bar, how did you get it up and in position by yourself?
@AdventureCampingAustralia
@AdventureCampingAustralia Жыл бұрын
You lay the tarp on the ground and go around and install all of your pegs then peg the low side down, and go to the front two corners inserting the poles loosely. Once you get it up in the air you go around and adjust the poles and ropes putting tension on them to make it neat. Hope this helps.

Put the guy rope loop over your spigot. Then do a slip knot below on your pole. Minimizes wear on the tarp.

How did you attach the spreader bar?
@AdventureCampingAustralia
@AdventureCampingAustralia 4 ай бұрын
You lay the tarp our first with the spreader bar underneath the tarp; then install then install all the pegs in the ground, using a pole as a gauge to ensure the pegs are a uniform distance from the tarp, including the lower 3. Then you simply place one pole at a time, loosely installing the guide ropes, working your way around until all the poles are installed and the tarp is up. Then extend the poles and work your way around adjusting the ropes until all the poles are plumb and the ropes are tight.

@@AdventureCampingAustralia Thanks for the info. How is the spreader bar attached to the upright poles?
@AdventureCampingAustralia
@AdventureCampingAustralia 4 ай бұрын
 @PopCornSheffield-ow4vm The spreader bar has a hole at each end and the top of the pole goes through the hole, with the rope going over the top to hold everything down. You can sort of see at 2:55 in the video.
