Hello, all! Here is a compilation of auroras I captured when I was up in Fort Yukon, Alaska last month. I really wanted to test how the new Sony a7 IV would handle extreme low-light situations. Most of the reviewers who test cameras really don't stress them enough - testing low light performance in a studio setting by just changing aperture and shutter speed to simulate low light really doesn't do it. Auroras are barely bright enough to be recorded in real-time, and it takes a very light-sensitive camera to produce a well-exposed video of the aurora without huge amounts of noise. I found the a7 IV to perform very well for my uses, especially given the fact that I was using a 14mm f/1.8 lens which has a small clear aperture (not a lot of light getting transmitted into the camera). Usually in North Dakota when I shoot real-time videos of the aurora with my a7s I need to use something like a 35mm f/1.4 to let in enough light into the camera, but because the auroras in Alaska are so much brighter and the Sony did such a good job, I could use the 14mm without issues.
Now you may have noticed that this is the second aurora-related video I've posted on my channel this month. Is Apalapse turning into an aurora-focused KZfaq channel? No, but I want to share my own artwork more now that I have time to enjoy photography and really use my passion of astrophotography and aurora chasing.
