Hello, all! Here is a compilation of auroras I captured when I was up in Fort Yukon, Alaska last month. I really wanted to test how the new Sony a7 IV would handle extreme low-light situations. Most of the reviewers who test cameras really don't stress them enough - testing low light performance in a studio setting by just changing aperture and shutter speed to simulate low light really doesn't do it. Auroras are barely bright enough to be recorded in real-time, and it takes a very light-sensitive camera to produce a well-exposed video of the aurora without huge amounts of noise. I found the a7 IV to perform very well for my uses, especially given the fact that I was using a 14mm f/1.8 lens which has a small clear aperture (not a lot of light getting transmitted into the camera). Usually in North Dakota when I shoot real-time videos of the aurora with my a7s I need to use something like a 35mm f/1.4 to let in enough light into the camera, but because the auroras in Alaska are so much brighter and the Sony did such a good job, I could use the 14mm without issues.
Now you may have noticed that this is the second aurora-related video I've posted on my channel this month. Is Apalapse turning into an aurora-focused KZfaq channel? No, but I want to share my own artwork more now that I have time to enjoy photography and really use my passion of astrophotography and aurora chasing. I am graduating college this summer and should have some more time to create KZfaq videos focused on general photography education, so keep staying subscribed for when those videos come out, because I have some great things planned.
I hope you all enjoyed this little real-time video compilation, and if you did, let me know in the comments! If you're not subscribed, consider it, because more videos like these and other more general photography content is coming very soon!

That was just incredible to watch. I have never seen it live. It always just images or timelapses with long exposure. Thanks for making making and sharing this. And impressive performance of the A7IV with ISO 40.000.

Absolutely beautiful! Seems like there’s more detail structure in the aurora perhaps because of the higher mp?

I got a say this is the best video of Northern light I have seen. Just bought the A7IV because I'm going to Iceland for a movie. Di'dn't thought this would be possible. May I ask what were your settings appart from the 40 000 ISO? And damn, 40 000, this is just insane the quality it has at such ISO
