●Yakushiji Temple.
Yakushiji Temple is a Buddhist temple in Nishinokyo-cho, Nara City, Nara Prefecture, Japan, and is the main temple of the Hosso sect of Buddhism. It has no mountain name. The main deity is Yakushi Sanzon. It is one of the seven largest temples in the southern capital. The founder is Emperor Temmu, and the official name of Yakushi-ji Temple is "Daihonzan Yakushi-ji Temple" of the Hosso sect.
The Founding of Yakushiji Temple and the Transfer of the Temple to Heijo-kyo Capital
Yakushiji Temple was built by Emperor Temmu in the 9th year of the Temmu Emperor (680) to pray for the healing of Empress Uno Sanryo (later Emperor Jito). Emperor Temmu, however, died before Yakushiji Temple was completed, and Emperor Jito came to the throne and built Yakushiji Temple in the new capital, Fujiwara-kyo. In 697, the main statue of Yakushi Nyorai was opened to the public, and the following year, the construction was completed and monks were assigned to live in the temple, as recorded in "Shoku-nihongi".
UNESCO World Cultural Heritage.
In 1998 (Heisei 10), it was registered as a World Cultural Heritage site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as one of the components of "Cultural Properties of Ancient Nara".
