Also, I am Swedish but I have family in Illinois I can stay with, so what I am asking is, can Europeans participate? I know there were Swedish soldiers but I am not sure what the rules are. Thanks!

I've lived in the deep south where there are many confederate cemeteries and such, it wasn't until I attended a reenactment that I truly began to *feel* the sorrow that comes with such destruction. I see people like to crack jokes about the "losers"... There are no winners in war, patting oneself on the back for killing entirely defeats the purpose and all that was meant to be learned is lost if that's the sentiment left with our descendants.

Especially with Germans this idea of the Union standing for liberty was prevalent, as many Germans who immigrated recently remembered the Revolutions of 1848 in Germany and viewed the Southerners in a similar way that they viewed the German nobility who tried and succeeded in keeping the nation disunited

Who were they and what regiments?! I’d love to know. I’ve read 1,000 of letters on both sides and once you learn about the individuals it’s a most fascinating perspective. Confederate Soldiers back then I can say had allot of respect to the founding principles of this country and the Constitution. The War of the Rebellion is both our history and we should both take rejoice in that no matter and take love for our heritage, culture, and history.

I’m sure that many rebels did have protecting their homes on their minds. But the chief principle they fought for, was the preservation and expansion of Slavery. I’m for the issue of states rights. Also in that same letter Lincoln ends it by saying that his preference was ” to see men everywhere be free” Lincoln was stating that his focus would be to preserve the Union. Even though his desire was to end slavery. So Lincoln kept his beliefs on ending slavery silent, to not rock the boat too much , so he kept a lot of his beliefs private In The beginning unfortunately. However Lincoln’s position on the abolitionist movement grew stronger as the war went on. Which lead him to write the emancipation proclamation. Even with all of that. It still doesn’t take away that the Confederacy’s main reason for Secession from the union, it was still the preservation and expansion of slavery. In a speech to the people of Savannah Georgia on March 21,1861 the Vice President of the CSA Alexander H. Stephens said… “Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite idea; its foundations are laid, its corner-stone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery subordination to the superior race is his natural and normal condition. This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth.” This speech was said a few weeks before the Confederate Army attacked Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861. Also there was a very common belief among the poor white population that didn’t own slaves that “Servile Insurrection” would happen if the slaves were free. Meaning a giant race war would happen, and the freed slaves would massacre the southern whites as an act of vengeance. This was clearly proven false after the slaves were freed. So many poor whites did support slavery, based on this lie that the southern leaders kept feeding the white population. It was this lie, that many took up a riffle to defend that practice. Also I did look up the confederation emancipation. The bill in question was really about allowing recently freed slaves to enlist in the army. Because the CSA was in desperate need of troops, near the end of the war. That bill was rejected in the Confederacy’s Congress time and time again. Until it finally passed in March of 1865. At that point it was too late, The Union broke through And the South surrendered in April of 1865. However The bill your talking about would not free all of the slaves in the south. Also I say this as someone whom has had family members from both my Father’s and Mother’s side fight for the Confederate Army for the State of Georgia and Alabama. I’m sure my ancestors had other reasons for Joining and fighting. But make no mistake, they knew they were fighting to preserve slavery. Their Legacy is not one I wish to honor. But God is Gracious, He has revealed to me the truth that all people are equally valued in His sight. And gave me the desire and fire of Anti-racism. That my ancestors clearly lacked. I’m not doomed to their racist legacy, but I must be vigilant. And make sure that I pass these values of Anti-racism down to my children if I should have any. So that our ancestors legacy is not repeated ever again. And it’s a hard fact to come to terms with, for many of us that have family that fought for the Confederacy. But it’s still an Undeniable historical fact, that the CSA, separate from the United States. Because of its wish to sustain slavery. And even many of the poorest white people, supported that, despite not owning slaves themselves.

@@verderhapsody Great reply, it is obvious that you have strong feeling and thoughts on this subject based on your family history but i would also like you to consider our shared upbringing ( I grew up in NY in the 80s and my educational and media diet was most likely very similar to yours) Slavery was ending everywhere, in Brazil it ended in 1888 and in Cuba in 1886. Of course in the Arab middle east slavery still is going on. General Lee said that he would hope to see the end of slavery and many other prominent southerns felt the same way. Abraham Lincoln wanted freed slave to be transplants to our countries (Liberia, central America) He was a white supremacists by today's standards even by 1900s. He only wanted a western Christian united States and felt it would be better not to have blacks competing with white for the same jobs and wages. I would also suggest that many liberal abolish have quite a savior complex towards non whites but they truly don't view them as equals. The reason I mention this is that most of our educational the arts, movies, News papers, music is controlled by these same savior complex elites that love to point their finger at others saying they are Trumpers or racist when those same elites have nothing to do with non whites in their personal life. I think this country is and has always been the least racist country for it's particular time in history. That said i thank you for this exchange of ideas. It was his attempt of a compromise between the radical abolitionist and the conservative anti-slavery movement. Yes there was a belief that once freed, the newly liberated African American's couldn't successfully assimilate into american society. Which was indeed false they most certainly could, provided that leaders would stand firm and protect their rights as citizens, but that is a topic for another day. However the planed was a failure, many countries in central america didn't wish to participate in the program. One of the countries that was considered was Belize. As well as the fact that there was evidence of huge amounts of embezzlement. From the people in charge of the program. The colonization program was criticized during that time as well. one of the critics was Fredric Douglass himself. However many Freed African Americans opposed to that idea because, of the fact that they spent their whole lives in America. However Lincoln had abandoned the plan. Even advocating for political suffrage for the liberated slaves. But one thing that can not be disputed was that Lincoln was in favor of Ending Slavery, He expressed his views on the subject. And made efforts to make it happen once in office as president. And He did make it happen. If you remember our discussion of the greenly letter. Lincoln had an earlier draft of the emancipation proclamation already made. Before that interview. SO, as for General Lee, there where records of him owning slaves before the war. Also yes he did say that, in a letter to his wife in 1856 "In this enlightened age, there are few I believe, but what will acknowledge, that slavery as an institution, is a moral & political evil in any Country. It is useless to expatiate on its disadvantages. I think it however a greater evil to the white man than to the black race, & while my feelings are strongly enlisted in behalf of the latter, my sympathies are more strong for the former. The blacks are immeasurably better off here than in Africa, morally, socially & physically. The painful discipline they are undergoing, is necessary for their instruction as a race, & I hope will prepare & lead them to better things. How long their subjugation may be necessary is known & ordered by a wise Merciful Providence." But from the context of this letter it doesn't seem that Lee wished for the system to end anytime in the near future as to the date of that letter. This letter also proved that Lee was not the kind slave master that many people wish for him to be. Lee also was Completely against the civil rights for any of the newly freed slaves after the civil war. There are accounts of his former slaves, stating that once they were recaptured after trying to escape He had them beaten severely. When it came for his father-in-law's slaves to be freed after his Death. Lee had forced them to stay for another five years. He refused to exchange black union solider prisoners when Grant proposed to a prisoner exchange. He thought also thought that Black people were intellectually inferior to white people. It seems beyond a shadow of a doubt that Lee was indeed a white supremacist. So compared to Lincoln, Robert E.Lee showed no growth or change on his beliefs what so ever. Yes your are right, there were, people who wanted to end slavery and didn't think black people were equal. But you forgot one major thing. The abolitionist movement had two main groups. .. -The anti-slavery side, that viewed slavery as wrong and wished for it to end. but didn't view black people as equal to whites. and thought it should be ended , whether gradual or immediate. and ... -The Radicals believed in complete and swift end of slavery and the belief that black people were equal to whites and advocated for complete civil rights and suffrage for African Americans . Also remember that Bill we talked about when the confederacy debated about using freed slaves, They were on the verge of losing to the Union, and many in the confederate Congress and CSA army generals were opposed to the idea. because it was against the idea of their revolution, SO given that, the CSA was against using Black soliders even though in theory they could have won the war if not prolong it. I dont think that the CSA would have ended slavery soon if they won the war. Also no, The generals fighting for the CSA, were in fact supporters of slavery and owned slaves themselves. Also that FBI link you sent me doesn't really prove that servile insurrection was something to worry about. in fact I had to look real hard, the only thing I found was the 1995 fbi report on violent crimes concerning murder. So If you're talking about the 1995 fbi violent crime report on murders. which I'm assuming you're talking about that. That is extremely taken out of context. The difference between white and black offenders was not even 7%. Also in the same report, the majority of white victims are killed by white offenders. this fact is stated In table 2.8 on page 17 of that report.
