During a time of unprecedented chaos and uncertainty, I can imagine it was great coming back to one of the most fundamental buddhist temple complexes within the country. After all, it has been a major site for training that housed 3000 monks at its heyday, surrounded by the thickly cedar tree covered mountainside and overlooking Kyoto. Furthermore, Mount Hiei is revered as the “mother mountain of Japanese Buddhism” due to the great many high priests from each sect of Japanese Buddhism who gathered on the mountain. It does not get much more holier than early Heian era sites of worship. That said, hearing the cable cars approach whilst honking their squeaky, compact car horn is just too funny. 😅 Out of all the prefectures I was fortunate enough to visit, Shiga has been the most hospitable. Me and my brother stayed for two nights at the Ryokan Beniayu (尾上温泉 旅館紅鮎), located near Takamatsu station in Nagahama city. We were greeted with a poster displaying the geographically similarly shaped entities of both Lake Biwa and our home country, Austria. It was a genuinely nice touch, and only the start of a wonderful experience with the staff.

Have not been to this temple, will be one of my visit spots next trip to Japan.

Hieizan Enryakuji Temple is where the founders of various schools of Japanese Buddhism, such as Honen, Shinran, Eisai, Dogen, and Nichiren, studied and where the foundation of modern Japanese Buddhism was laid.

From Kyoto, you can get to the port of Otsu in about 30 minutes by train. From there you can enjoy a cruise on Lake Biwa.
