観音堂の背後には岩壁が覆い被さるようにそそり立っていて、その光景に圧巻されます。
江戸中期の建築といわれ、堂内には鎌倉時代の作と伝えられる本尊・馬頭観世音が安置されています。
馬頭観世音を本尊とする札所は珍しいそうです。
Behind the Kannon Hall, a rock wall rises up as if enveloping it, making for a truly impressive sight.
It is said to have been built in the mid-Edo period, and inside the hall is enshrined the principal image of the temple, a Bato Kannon statue said to have been made in the Kamakura period.
It is said that temples that have Bato Kannon as their principal image are rare.
馬が唯一の交通手段であり、農作業や運輸の動力でもあった時代、馬と生活を共にする人々が飼馬をひいて参詣する
ことで賑わったそうで、今日では交通安全の祈願のために訪れる方も多いとのことです。
In the days when horses were the only means of transportation and also powered farm work and transport, the temple was bustling with people who lived with horses, pulling their horses to make pilgrimages,and today many people visit the temple to pray for safe travels.
お堂の横には橋立鍾乳洞があり、昔から胎内くぐりの霊場として巡礼達に親しまれてきたそうです。現在も人気の観光スポットで、撮影当日も子供づれの家族の方々が大勢訪れていました。
Next to the hall is the Hashidate Cave, which has long been popular with pilgrims as a sacred place where people can pass through. It is still a popular tourist spot today, and on the day of the photo shoot, many families with children were visiting.
今回は札所28番の石龍山・橋立堂をお参りし、巡礼道を通って札所29番へ向かいました。
