Only Americans think this, Europeans or Asians don't care about Kwan that much. She is overrated, she played it safe technically many times and her jumping technique wasn't good, look at the flutz and prerotated, toe-hammered underrotated flip. Irina should have been first here easily

Interesting that the exact same 3F problem occurred in her long program. In both instances, she was tilted too far forward in the air and landed too forward on the toe pick. But in the long program she couldn't recover.

Ilove Michelle Kwan of Spiral!😍 I love Michaelle Kwan!!!! I'm Japanese, so I am not good at English. I used Google Translate. I heard from the fans of Mao Asada that spiral raised his feet slowly and it is very important and it is very difficult to slide. That's why Michelle Kwan 's and Shizuka' s and Yuna 's Spiral have low difficulty and poor, she said. Is this true!? I do not believe it!! If you'd kindly teach me.

Yes Michelle is a beautiful skater , but no matter how much I watch her programs I can't figure out what all thd hype is about and how she won first place all those years. I mean I wanted to see and enjoy like everyone else..lol..but i just couldn't see what the world saw. So many other skaters ( my opinoon) are just as good . Michelle skates very carefully very few triple combo's or combo's in general ..no biellmann, her footwork and choreography are nice , but nothing spectacular. I just dont see it .

It was the whole packaging put together fairly consistently and for a very long time. Your observations are correct, but she reliably skated programs landing 6 or 7 triples for several years; most skaters rarely if ever skated a clean 7-triple program during their career. Of those who did, they beat Michelle when they skated clean and she did not, or when their jumps were more difficult, as with Lipinski at '97 Worlds and '98 Olympics and Butyrskaya at '99 Worlds. Kwan started this pattern of accomplishment by landing 7 triples as a 14 year old at '95 Worlds. Her longevity merits some of the exceptional praise she gets--not only performing at a high level but doing so for 10 years (she did lose a significant amount of technical strength by late '04-'05 but how many skaters perform at the top level for that long?) She had no glaring flaws or weaknesses during her performances except for rare instances, such as '97 Nationals where she still landed four triples. She did nearly everything at least fairly well and several things exceptionally well, such as her signature spiral (very few skaters did an inside-edge spiral at all in those days, much less one with a seamless transition to an outside edge). Comparing her to her rivals, Lipinski did have a much more difficult combination of triple jumps and was duly rewarded for this at 1997 Worlds and 1998 Olympics. Though her skating was much less mature, she still beat Michelle for gold in Nagano. I would say Slutskaya, at her best, was better than Kwan on jumps and some spins, but even there it is close--Slutskaya had a great Biellman on both feet, but Kwan had a much better sit spin. Cohen would have been another candidate for a "potentially better than Kwan" award but she rarely skated a clean long program (only one that I know of) and usually had at least one or two major falls. Slutskaya had great technical strength and speed but not nearly the grace, elegance, and effortless artistry that Kwan had. Suppose we say Slutskaya was still better than Kwan at her best, if we value the technical strength, height, speed, etc. more. That would still leave Kwan with the distinction of having begun a career of top-level international performance at an exceptionally young age and lasting longer in the group of top contenders for world-level titles. Am I missing anyone? Other than the rivals whom I considered here, and who were duly rewarded when they outskated Kwan, who else would even compete with Kwan to deserve the level of acclaim she gets?

Because other than Irina, all the others were having a hard time completing 7 triples in their programs and completing a clean program without falling once or twice.

Sasha and Sarah was NEVER close as consistent as Michelle was. Especially Sasha. But she’d definitely beat Michelle if only she could complete a clean program, which RARELY happened. So how can you say that medals were just handed to Michelle? You are just hating on Michelle. She’s not arrogant at all. You’re the one who’s arrogant and you’re a nobody.
