The energy and enthusiasm that the 4ocean Haiti crew brings to cleaning the ocean and coastlines is absolutely electric. March isn’t even over yet and the team’s already recovered nearly half a million pounds of harmful marine debris.
In this video, you’ll join Jeanty, 4ocean’s co-founders, and the 4ocean Haiti crew on the water as they scout the coastlines of Haiti for plastic and have a good time.

Is it their habits in these poor countries or is there no trash pick up/trash companies to keep things clean?
@mjb12141963
@mjb12141963 3 жыл бұрын
@@pammietime4495 It was the not that big of a deal 60 years ago for people to throw trash out of their moving cars. Even today it is not uncommon. Cities and states use prisoners and those serving community service to pick up trash on the highways. Now we have groups that are almost militarized. Think they have the right to threaten you. In many countries there is no trash pickup. There is no concern for keeping the environment clean. Many countries have no air pollution control. People in America don't know how clean our country is comparatively. In India they use the same river for drinking and cooking as they do to dump trash and dispose of their dead and it has reached a point that people are getting sick. People need to pick something they can do that will help the environment. I compost all my yard waste and kitchen scraps, most cardboard that we always seem to have piles of. I have piles of compost in my yard that I can't give away. If every household did one thing the world would be a better place. That is a pipe dream unfortunately.

@@4Ocean : Thank You for your reply, My Brother or Sister. As I was checking out your video here, I noticed this video to the right from this guy called Danye Har who was questioning whether you guys are scamming or not. Every time your videos come up his does as well. You have already, addressed his concerns but he made another video after, questioning your answers. The sad and annoying thing about this, and something that is telling about people's overall, mentality today, is that his videos have gotten over three million views while you guys are struggling with a hundred thousand some odd, views here. Meaning that people are showing more concern as to whether or not you guys are scamming rather than being concerned about the conditions of the oceans and the global environment overall. I can't begin to tell you how sad and depressing that seems. I mean, can't people use their brains at all. Look at the problem you guys have had the balls and backbone to try to tackle here, which is a global problem. What the heck, do these people expect anyway. It's so senseless and leaves other people thinking there is no hope so why bother at all. Correct? It's a case of the focus absolutely, being placed in the wrong place. I mean, if these people think you guys are scamming or not doing enough, then why the hell, don't they get out there and do better if they think they can. Correct? Instead of sitting on their damn, asses doing nothing, complaining about a group of people who at least, are making SOME, attempt and doing SOMETHING, as feeble as that may be. At least it's a start, and a very, long, overdo start, at that. I don't understand people you know, because every time someone gets out there and tries to do some real good in this world there always has to be someone come along and try to discredit them and try to tear them down. Pretty much, without fail. Sickens me beyond words. I mean sure, I'm not doing much of anything myself, which is why I most, certainly am not going to try to discredit and tear down the precious few out there, who ARE, attempting to do some real, genuine, good in this world, that's damn well sure. To me, you guys are Saints, Angels in the flesh. You look at this problem, you know it's colossal but yet, you refuse to let that deter you. That alone, makes you a huge, huge, inspiration to many. By now, you guys should be having the attention of all the world media, and be getting funding from governments and the filthy rich of this world, so you can expand your efforts in a way that I'm sure you would prefer to but are limited because of the limited resources you have to work with. Why people can't understand that is utterly, beyond me. You need our support not our suspicion. I'm sending all of you my most Deepest Love and Admiration. What you do you do for me and all of us on the planet. And for that, you are heroes of the highest order, you really are. I so, so, hope you get the media attention and funding you need in order to do this thing better. Much, much better and very, soon too. Warmest Wishes and Much Love from Canada. Be Well. Be Safe. Out For Now.

It's our pleasure, Ivan. We know that everyone is on their own path towards being sustainable, however, if we can just convince one person to make the switch we believe that one person will then encourage 5 other people to be more cognizant. It's important to know that many people aren't aware of the ocean plastic crisis and how they can make a difference, but with everyone's help, we can encourage others to make the switch to reusable alternatives and continue raising awareness of this issue.

@@4Ocean : Agreed, for sure. Every journey has to start somewhere, no matter how small or feeble it may seem at first and on the surface. Once it is started there is always, the possibility for the snowball effect to take place. Of course, the problems we are having with our oceans is but the tip of the iceberg regarding the environmental problems we are having worldwide both on land and sea. Deforestation, the polluting of the air, the polluting of our lakes and rivers as well, the destruction of wildlife habitat worldwide, and so forth. People choose to forget that everything is interconnected on this planet, and we life in a web of life, where we are one by one, breaking every strand needed to sustain life, to sustain US, and if we continue to break too many more of those strands the entire web is in danger of collapsing. We've had this message preached to us for decades now, and we increasingly, are seeing the effects with our very, own, eyes yet most of humanity STILL, chooses to do nothing. Basically, we are talking about Species Genocide here, and most of us are too, damn, blind and stupid to see that for ourselves. Even as you guys do what you do, I'm sure you realize the urgency more now, as you've gotten more into this, and seen more, than you sensed when you began this. If the oceans collapse worldwide, I can't begin to imagine the effect that will have on the rest of the world. If we destroy our forest, our Old Growth Forest in particular, worldwide, to a point where there is no return, that tipping point in other words, again, I can't begin to fathom the effect that will have on the rest of the world. Honestly, I don't think we have a choice any longer. If we don't start doing something major, soon, it is certain we are sealing our fate now. Maybe a hundred years from now, maybe two hundred, if we last for another five hundred going down the path we are currently, on I will be extremely, surprised. So this is why I say, you guys and those like you, are Heros of the Highest Order, as you force us to raise our awareness regardless, and I'm sure that the further you guys go with this, your awareness as well, will be heightened even more than it is now. Much Love and Most Warmest Wishes. Out For Now.

It would nice to see the process of how the collected plastics are processed locally or abroad. Just can't have them laying around in giant bags outside. What are the plastics being turned into. Who makes the bracelets, bags for 4Ocean?
@4Ocean
@4Ocean 4 жыл бұрын
That's certainly a great video idea. Everything we collect is taken back to our facilities where it's carefully sorted and compressed into bales. It's then either taken to Solid Waste Authority in West Palm Beach to be recycled or turned into energy, or it's being stored at our facilities for future use as we evaluate our co-processing options. The bracelets/bags are hand-assembled by Balinese Artisans.

Ocean pollution comes from many different sources. Many countries don't have the proper waste disposal infrastructure to handle the amount of plastic and waste being produced. Spreading awareness and educating others can help make a difference. Most people want to see change, there just isn't the economy or facilities to do so. We're out to change that.

Adopting a "pick it up, don't pass it up" mindset is a great way to work towards a cleaner ocean. 🌊

Great job 4ocean team! I am really curious, all this marine debris is coming from the Gulf of La Gonave or is garbage of nearby coastline?
@4Ocean
@4Ocean 3 жыл бұрын
It comes from many different areas, but we do see a lot of pollution in La Gonave.

How long will these young generation survive in cleaning the environment. Won't they get weary n tired if not properly compensated?

So I'm suggesting that schools must take part to require students in cleaning the environment as part of community service. If they are not taught at their young age, who will.

How sad to see this. In many undeveloped country they use the ocean as a dumpster. I saw it with my eyes in Bali. Once i moved from an island to another. In the middle of the ocean, from the roof of the boat where the locals were sitting, they started to throw full bags of trash in the sea. I couldn't understand what was going on and why. But i never forgot that. Was year 2000...

Many people aren't aware of the ocean plastic crisis and how they can make a difference. Other times, in areas where there is a lack of developed waste management infrastructure, there is nowhere for the trash to be discarded, so it ends up on the streets and in the waterways. With your help, we can encourage others to make the switch to reusable alternatives and continue raising awareness of this issue.

You can help us with our mission regardless of where you're located! You can volunteer in your community and raise awareness on the causes and effects of ocean plastic, have cleanups of your own, and especially reduce your use of single-use plastic. 💪

It’s awesome what you guys are doing HOWEVER your shirts are made out of plastic! It seems extremely redundant to make your shirts and other gear out of polyester which is plastic. Every time you wash one of those polyester shirts you are releasing millions of tiny plastic fibers into the ground water which then ends up in the ocean.

When working full-time in the elements where sunshine and moisture are prevalent, our crew members have the option of wearing a rashguard to protect them from rashes and UV rays. We're conscious of our plastic usage, but we use tools and materials that are the best for the job and protect our hard-working crews. We're conscious of the impact that microplastics have however, which is why all of the shirts we sell are made from 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton.

It's amazing hearing from others that are passionate about the oceans and coastlines and are looking to help. While we don't currently have a team there, we have a dedicated cleanups team that is working to expand our reach and make sure we have the biggest impact possible. In the meantime, we encourage you to start a local cleanup in your community, even if it's just some friends and family.

While there are other organizations focused on cleaning the open ocean and various garbage patches, our work focuses on cleaning trash from the coastlines and mouths of rivers.

It's a start.... There has to be a better way than picking it out of the water one piece at a time... Probably some expensive technology that Haiti can never afford.
