I have been considering a change in roof racks for a long time and finally decided to pull the trigger on a new FrontRunner Outfitters Slimline II roof rack for my Toyota 4Runner. I've been happy with my old rack (which will be for sale soon), but my experience in installing this new Front Runner rack really showed me how amazing this rack is. It's extremely well built, seems and looks super tough - can't wait to beat the crap out of it and see how it holds up!
This video is LONG because it's super detailed. I make a TON of mistakes, so there is plenty to learn from! The end result is fantastic and I couldn't be happier. This is PART ONE. Part two will be released next week with the details on installing the rest of the rack. This part we DRILL HOLES IN THE ROOF OF THE 4RUNNER! eek!

"I don't know if metal is going to bore out so easily, but I already have a hole in the roof so I might as well try it." Most guys have done something like this, but it takes a real man to post it on the internet. I found your video while searching for used 4Runners in my area, and this might be the most honest and relatable content I've ever watched, thanks!

Awesome video Jason! I really wish I filmed my install three weeks ago, I was in such a rush to put it on that I forgot to charge my camera. I had the advantage of having help from my brother who knew exactly how to install rivnuts. We just used an M8 bolt, a lock washer and two nuts to get the rivnuts seated. I really enjoy your videos keep up the good work and I look forward to part two of the install.

Hello Jason. I just learned of you recently so am still catching up. I have been driving Subaru WRX's for the past 15 years and have decided my next vehicle will be a 4Runner (maybe a TRD Pro?). My first experience with a 5th Generation was last October when I went with my friend around the White Rim Trail in Canyonlands NP. It was SO capable and was completely stock. I was impressed. I am turning 55 next week and have 40 years of auto mechanical work and a mechanical engineering degree to boot. Watching some of your stuff is like a horror movie with a well telegraphed plot (no offense). I appreciate you keeping your mistakes in the final edit. I also have something in common with you. I frequently buy a lesser model of something to save some money, but with a longing for the best. I usually buy the best in the end and spend more money overall then just going all the way initially. It's a sickness. Anyway, good channel, nice videos, and I appreciate you sharing your experiences.

We installed the Frontrunner rack on our 2018 TRD OR and learned some lessons. 2 recommendations from our experience: 1) If you're using the rivnuts, just buy the rivnut tool off amazon for $45 or so, it's soooo worth it. It even comes with a big assortment of rivnuts for future projects 2) instead of or in addition to item #1, buy/order some PlusNuts instead of using the rivnuts. The 5/16" size (closest SAE to the M8 Frontrunner size) is available on ebay from a seller and the pull out strength of a PlusNut is way higher than a rivnut. Grab 4 similar length 5/16" bolts, ideally stainless and never have to sweat issues down the road. The Frontrunner is a great rack, probably the best, but it isn't without it's own headaches or shortcomings here and there. Thanks for always sharing your learning with us Jason!

Front Runner roof racks are very high quality products, with loads of accessories to go with it. My dad rolled his 110 Land Rover Defender with a full rack on, the vehicle rolled 4 times over and the rack ONLY had a small bend on one of the side long ends. The rack was one of the old models still, the whole rack was welded as one piece nothing was bolted (aka build it yourself flat panel packaging) to make up the rack. The accessories from the old model still fit on the new models. Hands down I can say you've got a top of the line quality roof rack system!!! Buy yourself a step drill bit, they are made for drilling into sheet metal. LOL, you can also do with a rivet nut tool (gun) then you will not screw up your rivet nut inserts!!! You making the job harder than it really is by not having the correct tools for the installation, by having the correct tools to start off will save you a lot of headaches...

Good to keep perspective and complete the job. It took a lot of guts to not edit the video down into a smooth install. Instead you showed the false starts and effective recoveries. And now you have the experience and will know better what to do next time!

Great practice for when you get your van. :) You'll be drilling holes and cutting out sections of roof like there's no tomorrow. I much prefer PlusNuts to rivnuts. They provide more surface area under the sheetmetal and are less resistant to spinning. In other words, better for amateurs like me. I enjoyed the video Jason--I love the obsessive attention to detail...reminds me of someone I know.

Jason, love the videos :) I feel your stress and pain. I was putting same exact full size Front Runner rack on my 2018 4Runner last weekend. Very nervous drill 4 new holes in new roof and never installed rivnuts (was trying same two wrench hand torque method I saw on utube :) Few things I learned: 1) put drill bit sleeve/stop on so when bit breaks true, bit stops 1/2" after breaking thru (since I heard air bag was in area) 2) good quality 7/16" bit is key for M8 rivnut. After smaller hole drilled first 3) Re: rivnut by hand...yikes! I knew this was not gonna go well (after first couple turns) So, after talking to local 4wheel drive install shop...set up appointment...they did quick 15 minute pneumatic rivnut drill install of 4 rivnuts in my 4 pre-drilled holes...charged me $25 ...definitely the way too go (for me :) Keep up the great videos :)

The silicone is not a very good idea, especially long term. I would recommend to properly clean the area and nutserts of any grease or contamination. Touch up the bare metal with a self etch primer then paint. Once dry, install the nutsert with windshield urethane. Clean off the excess and put a small bit of seem sealer around the nutsert.

If you fit a piece of rubber tubing over the drill bit only allowing the amount of depth you want to drill to protrude you won't go too far into the hole due to pushing hard and possibly go through the headliner or an airbag cable....some folks use tape but that can move due to pressure.

As a person who has owned more Toyotas than most, 3 tundras, 3 tacomas, 3 4runners, 1 sequoia, 3 early 90's 4x4 trucks and 3 fj40's I ran thru the Rubicon, love toyotas, they are great vehicles, but the whole Toyota reliability is a huge marketing ploy built on decades. If you watch consumers reports and pay attention to reviews in general, Toyotas are sometimes great, good and last. I just find it funny when people talk about Toyotas legendary reliability which isn't always legendary. My service advisor can atest to that.

@@luciussulla987 I agree, but if this companies are as good as they say they are, they should make the life of their consumers easier. If they had the right tools they wouldn't be paying a premium for such products. I used to buy a lot of parts for jeeps when I was a newbie, I'll tell you that it was the companies that included the most simple tools that still have my business and my friends whenever we or new people we meet want products that are worth their premium price.
@luciussulla987
@luciussulla987 5 жыл бұрын
I'm not quite sure what you mean by if they had the right tools they wouldn't be paying a premium, people pay for these brands because they have a reputation for having quality products that last regardless of the tools they own. If these companies did start including the necessary tools all it would do it raise the price to cover their costs to source and provide them. Sure it would help a portion of their customers while another portion like me would most likely just throw the included stuff in a bin and use their own preferred tools. It's the old "no such thing as a free lunch", personally I'd rather just use my own tools since I'm familiar with and trust them but I understand why others would rather it all come in the package. As they say, you do you boo boo.

why didn't you go with GOBI? It's so much easier to install. Thats what i have on my 2015 TRD PRO and really love it. and it was a breeze to install.

I ran a Gobi on my 4Runner and had I kept my 4Runner I would have made the switch to frontrunner. The frontrunner is just so much more useable. The Gobi I had on for a year and it did have spots of rust. Mounting things was a bit of a challenge.

I've seen so many GOBI racks here in Utah with rust on them as well. Not good!

They couldn’t make the rack where it uses factory mounting locations??? Great video though Jason 👍🏻👍🏻

I want a good roof rack as well. After watching this video, I would probably NOT buy the front runner rack. Why would they have you install rivnuts? Just drill and use proper bolts? Very sketchy.

Nathan, mainly for others down the road that agree with your comment (I originally did before install). The rivnut allows the whole system to be waterproofed from the top via silicone (though I wish FR had worked this out better) under the rivnut and in the threads of the rivut as well. Due to the way the FR rack assembles, it would be extremely difficult to use nuts and bolts and waterproof it well. I bought all the hardware to bolt it all instead and as I'm mocking things up, had one of this verbal "Oh no" moments when I realized it really wouldn't work well. Just my personal experience.

Please start getting into the habit of putting the rear cap on your lenses when they are not in use. Its a good habit to get into ( like if it rolled off the roof like the wrench) and you are drilling metal around it. You could easily get a small piece of debris on the back element and then scratch the lens.

The half hour drive to Lowes or Home Depot would have been worth it. Read the instructions first and get the tools they are telling you to get. It's not rocket science

NEVER EVER use Loctite on a bolt inserted into a rivnut. Spinning rivnuts are the real deal, especially if they are inaccessible from the underside.
