Excellent review of this product, which arrived yesterday after only 10 days. The issues seem to be very minor compared to other 4 TB drives such as those from China. Those builds rarely get great reviews because the collections are not curated very well. I too am an old school gamer, and I still have a modded Xbox with the original Coin Ops which was only available for the Xbox at the time. I love playing those old school arcade games at home. Stuff like Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, and the Metal Slug series. After contacting the seller about a question I had, he was very quick to respond...within 24 hours which is great. He also mentioned that he will be offering a service that can be either free or paid. He will allow you to very simply add games to this system without having to hunt down the game yourself from sometimes shady websites. Pretty cool service actually.

Thank you very much! Yes, I love this drive. It's the best one I've reviewed/own. I use it very frequently. I was also recently informed about the ability to add games to the drive as well. I've not yet tried that aspect, but will be soon!

Hi Jon Thanks for the great video. I have the 4TB drive to and I find there are some games that don't play like Model 3 "Star Wars Trilogy" and talk to Ricardo and he is quick to respond from a email and added a fix but I still can not get it to run. Overall I really like the RetroStation 4TB HDD build.

Hi Wayne, thank you! On my drive, within the 'Model 3' option I'm not seeing SW Trilogy on the drive. Was this something custom that was added to yours by chance? I've used it before on the Steam Deck and you can use the controllers, but hard to do. It worked better for me using the touch screen on the Steam Deck.

Awesome video thank you and I ended up purchasing this Dr. I wonder if youve used any controllers aside from the Xbox wired one? I have the 8bitdo ultimate Bluetooth which works in the menu screen but not at all in the games themselves. Same for PS4 controller and a Logitech F10. They all work in the menu but not at all in the game, basically I'm stuck using the steam deck itself for controls which is difficult when it's docked LOL

Just to update anyone who's had a similar problem, my trick to get the 8bitdo ultimate Bluetooth controller to work is to map the "select" button as the hotkey. So in the controller and Bluetooth settings menu, setting > controller mapping. Map all buttons as you normally would but instead of making the home button the hotkey, use "select". Fpr whatwvwr reason, this worked and thus controller now works during gameplay.

Brilliant video just a quick question iv used the method you showed by plugging into a dock and played it that way but some tines when I hold down the volume and power on the drive doesn't show not all the time any tips?

Perhaps check if anyone has encountered a similar issue with the same dock that you have. Also, check if there are any firmware updates for the dock and that your Steam Deck updates have all been applied. I've not seen it intermittingly show the drive, it's been consistent here.

Can this be adapted to run on a PC working through the OTC connection on the At Games Legends ultimate. Seems like the problem is always controller mapping. Is it better in Batocera?

I've connected Batocera to the ALU in the past with no problems. You just need the HDMI and OTG cable connected from the ALU to a Steam Deck dock, press the Channel button to swap over to the deck. You'll then go into the controller input, press and hold a key on the ALU and map the buttons. I've not tried it specifically with this drive, but it's running Batocera so should be good.

Depends on the controller. I used a wired xbox 360 controller (clone) and it worked without any mapping. Other controllers will require mapping. Steam Deck worked immediately, though it's also emulating an xbox 360 controller.

What are you using to view the spreadsheet (I assume you're talking about the spreadsheet)? In excel, I'm seeing 30k rows, each listing one game. If you're having trouble viewing it, you can use OpenOffice (free) to view it I think: www.officesuite.com/en/free-download

Hey Wagner, do you have any knowledge why none of the roms do not play? I have tried every emulator and roms. When pressing the button for launch game and it looks like it wants to load, but then it goes back to the game selection. 4 tb hdd

Be sure BT is enabled, then under Controller Mapping there is an option for Bluetooth controller pairing. It's been a little while since I've done it, so going based on memory.

Totally up to you, this drive has 4TB of games vs 2TB on the Retrostation PC. Also, using it with the Steam Deck may make it more convenient.

Great review. Thanks. If it had Sinden light gun I would buy. Lack of BBC micro is a shame, but I guess more mainsteam games have bumped it..

Just an fyi - You can actually plug in the Sinden light gun with this drive and it will auto-configure light gun support. You can go into the menu to add the "Light Gun" option and it will scan the drive for light-gun enabled games and auto-categorize them for you. I mentioned to EoF that this may be something they want to make as a default for users that they won't have to do this themselves.

A few things to try: 1) Try updating the Game List: wagnerstechtalk.com/pc-batocera/#Update_Game_List 2) Boot the PC/Steam Deck in Batocera wagnerstechtalk.com/pc-batocera/#Boot_Batocera_from_USB_Stick One of those should help. There is a video at the top of the guide, but of course you don't need to install anything (skip over that). This guide+video was designed for installing to a USB but you already have everything on the HDD so nothing there for you to do. It will have some usage information that may be helpful though.

One bit of an annoyance I have run into I got my 4tb yesterday hook everything up to the steam deck using your video tutorial but now my switch emulator buttons are all over the place!😢 When I press up it goes left and only registers one button press yet yesterday it was working just fine. Could you please help me out with fixing this boss please please!! I will greatly appreciate it

I don't know if I'm in the minor or not but I'd like to see less computer system/8-bit systems. I feel companies want to sell you on the number of games which I don't think is really necessary. I think sticking to the more common systems is the way to go for most people.

It depends on the buyers. I mostly play the classic Arcade games myself, but totally get why that wouldn't appeal to others as much that don't have the nostalgia for those games or consoles available during that same period. Definitely check their game list to determine if this drive makes sense for your personal preferences.

I got the steam deck and I connected the retro station hard drive, and it’s not recognizing the drive as a boot device. The only time it recognizes the retro station is in desktop mode in the steam deck, but I don’t know how to execute it to open from there it’s not recognizing it when I boot it up.

Haven't heard of this issue. Make sure your steam deck is fully shutdown. Then, connect the drive and hold the volume down and press the power button once while still holding the volume down. Should take you to the boot menu, select the drive and boot it up. If not, may be something odd with your drive. In that case, contact eof here: explosionoffun.com/contact-us and let them know the issue you're having.

I notified explosion of fun. They said the version I had was for windows. Meanwhile, on the website they’re selling 2/4TB versions that say it’s for both steam deck and windows.Thank you for your help.

After selecting it in the boot menu should the boot video auto play? Just got mine and when I select the drive my screen is just black… fans still on but just a black screen

Please check with EoF here: explosionoffun.com/contact-us . One thing I do know, some Steam Deck users encountered the black screen issue on boot (very few of them). I never heard back on what the fix was when I asked. Not sure if EoF already knows a solution, so best to check with them. Alternatively, you can plug the drive into your Windows PC and it should work just fine (if you have one). But, if you hear back with a solution from EoF, please let me know what it was. I would love to update my guide with the fix.

This is a hard drive, not a console. A Pandora's box has the games pre-installed on it's own console. I'm thinking that would be a no, but I don't own a PB so I could be wrong.

Does anyone know how to hook this device up to a tv ? Does it have to be done through a mini PC or can it be booted from a streaming box ? And if a mini PC which is the best cheapest mini PC for this

I show in this video connecting it to a Steam Deck, which is a mini PC. Of course, you could buy something else also, if you wanted. I also show it docked and connected to a portable monitor/tv.

So its ez to add games to it? I use google with steamdeck for any random ps 2 rom side and download it and Put it on the ps 2 folder from the external hard drive?

Unless mapped differently, you'll press SELECT+START at the same time (on the Steam Deck, it's the two top black buttons). @wagnerstechtalk I was told that on the 4TB drive but was told playing on retro station will delete the info on drive. Have you run into this issue at all? I have not purchased the deck because I don’t want to lose my games but I see you are doing what I want. Please advise.

Not sure where you heard that, but they were misinformed. You run RS as shown in this video, all data is on the HDD. I've run it every method possible, zero data loss.

@@WagnersTechTalk Thanks for taking time and helping clarify this issue for me. So the 4TB Retrostation Deck has less games and of course runs off Steam Deck. I have the Retrostation PC4U which has 75thousand games but looks like the one you have in the video. I was trying to find out if you did have the PC4U version that has 75thousand games and if it has loaded with Steam Deck? I asked Ricardo directly and he said it would work but there is a chance I would lose the data on the PC4U Retrostation 4TB version. I want to get a Steam Deck but not if it will wipe my Retrostation you know?

I've got one of these drives. It's excellent but my 8bitdo controller will NOT pair while using it. So my solution is to just rip the ROMS I want into Emulation Station and play them that way.

No Batocera 36 option?... No light Gun category?.. also.. why do they want your pc to log in?... and only 95 PS2 games on a 4TB drive, case looks nice though.

I mentioned to EoF about a lightgun category would be welcomed, of course it's very easy to add it. The drive is 95% full, some room is needed for rendering. Don't think much more could be added without removing others. I must say, this a great curated list of games overall. There is room for improvement and likely to happen, EoF is very responsive to feedback. If you're booting into the drive from the Steam Deck or PC, no internet is needed. If you plug the drive into Windows and start it from there, that's the only point where you'll see the login prompt mentioned in this video.

I don’t understand why people pay for emulator and game hard drives. You can literally get it all for free from any of the thousands of archive sites. If it’s not legal for you to download the game in your country, it’s not legal for you to own this either.

Please tell me you are joking? While I'm not into emulation and I don't care about running emulators or playing retro games I mainly play big MMOs on my Steam Deck but even I can tell setting up a system like this where 80-90% of the games actually work with one button press is not something easy to do, let alone adding all the media and making it look as nice as this, to make something like this happen you need to have time and not just a little bit of time, this takes DAYS if not MONTHS to have a nice looking setup like this, and not everyone have the free time to do this. Also let's not forget not everyone know how to make emulators run, and things can get very confusing for someone who is getting into this sort of things.

@@zackdreak1870 i second to the most what you’re saying I’ve been messing around with emulators for YEARS and still I am learning new stuff to this day on making certain games and certain emulators runs smoothly it by all means damn sure ain’t no easy let alone quick process the part from downloading tweaking testing and then getting all the artwork video clips together and putting it all in order it is slow as hell. I got my steam deck back in February and I’m still working on, the artwork and the video clips till this day just mainly because I don’t have that kind of time to sit around all days a week or weeks to get it done quickly as possible so I don’t know what that guy up there is talking about lbs nothing is as simple as it looks when it comes to the set up process of emulation

@@zackdreak1870 P.S. not to mention I already had a hard drive sitting around that I bought I believe late last year like this for roughly 120 on Amazon and because of this video, I was given the idea to try to plug it into my steam deck and see if it would also work on there and to my surprise, it did just as easy as plugging it into my PC

Sean, in many countries in Europe a comma (,) is the decimal separator. I also show at 01:08 the conversion rate in USD to make sure it's clear. Not sure how better to answer your question. Maybe this: eur.currencyrate.today/convert/amount-179-to-usd.html ? It can change daily depending on currency fluctuations/exchange rates. I hope this helps.
