Gear box used in this build is Planetary Gearbox not Harmonic drive, Don't know how I got that name stuck in my head, time for a new head
@josephfouad35614 жыл бұрын
I hope it will work fine, as it is not cheap indeed !

I'll take the old head.

Harmonic Drive co. actually sells both cycloidal drives and planetary gearboxes under the same name. I picked up two used planetary gearboxes before I clicked to this little twist. Planetary gearboxes will work well for this application but keep in mind that there is some noticable backlash on the input shaft, so compensation via software is needed. The output shaft is characterized as "low backlash" and is almost immeasurable from my experience.
@advanceair4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for info. Mach4 has some backlash compensation I am hoping it will work for this.
@AsitShouldBe4 жыл бұрын
nice project, i vould do the same but i'm scared about backlash using normal planetary reduction drive.. and the strain wave generator gearbox is too expensive..

His machine was far better than those advertised. Simply fantastic. My jaw just dropped as always when watching his videos. A million THUMBS up.

@@advanceair In the future do you think you'll try to make a 5th axis trunnion?
@jellebosma76234 жыл бұрын
Wow looks great! I would consider making a thicker back plate for tge chuck tho. In your fusion model it looks to be a little bit thin
@advanceair4 жыл бұрын
I am planing on .500 steel. Hope that is enough
@jellebosma76234 жыл бұрын
@@advanceair ah, it might be just fine i guess. But if i was to build it i would use 20-25mm as back plate ( 0.8-1"). All of the cutting forces have to pass through it, so better safe then sorry. And of course good quality steel, the best option would be cast iron, but if that isn't suitable or out of price i would go with machine or tool steel. Or did you already think of this?
@advanceair4 жыл бұрын
I would like cast iron but can’t get it easy. I will get tool steel or stress less steel. I do have 1” aluminum but I don’t think it’s good Option.
@jellebosma76234 жыл бұрын
@@advanceair with your options i would go with the toolsteel. Cast iron is relatively simply obtained, but you'd need to have connections. Stress less steel doesn't help that much because machines put new stresses in the material, but i don't think that is a issue. Some good quality steel (in Europe S355), or tool steel will do the job just fine (in Europe c20-c45 or 42CrMo4). But I am guessing you already have something in mind?

The only thing I'd do differently is make a different adapter plate for the stepper to the gearbox, so that it acts as the fourth side of the cube.
@user-te5fb6lm2t4 жыл бұрын
I see you do not use pins to fix the parts only screws? What hold parts together against each other in directions where screws not work. Only friction? Is it enough?
@handdancin4 жыл бұрын
did you consider a hypocycloidal gearbox? they are cool. also, those 1" aluminum plates are awesome- where did you buy them from?

Vince, how is the servo shaft connected to the gear box? I see the shaft on the servo and the hole on the greabox, but is there a key on the servo that matches a key slot on the gear box? Is there any other set screws or something? Thanks,

Great job! But let me disappoint you a bit, Vince. Zero backlash of this gearbox is not so zero. More likely "zero". 5 arc minutes on the edge of your 160mm chuck will give approximately 0.116mm of backlash. Sorry. Think about to add some breakstop device to it.
@advanceair4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Andrew, hope backlash compensation in Mach4 helps a bit
