I am a retired middle-school teacher who taught in a small Indiana town where lunches were prepared by incredible farm moms. Best lunches ever. Then, like you said, the government stuck its nose where it didn't belong and anything homemade became illegal. It was tough going for several years. And a I mean tough ... I could tell you some stories of horrible food served to children ...Glad to hear your garden is doing well. Love seeing you hand-loomed potholders. During the "lockdown" I wove over 200! It was a blast! Bless you for all you do for sooooo many people.God Bless America!

Sh makes and does a lot of things that remind me of what I grew up with. I love watching her and Mr.Brown they are so precious and the love they still have for each other to this day is so nice to watch. I wish we could all go back to living this way. I grew up on a huge farm and we had canned goods, fresh veggies from the garden, fresh chicken eggs, wood stove, a water pump from the spring in our front yard, and many more things I haven't seen in many years. It's such a shame we've lost so much of the simpler way of living.

I'm a retired teacher who loved the cobblers, rolls, cakes & goodies that our lunchroom ladies spoiled us with. As a kid I learned to eat quite a variety of good food when eating in the school cafeteria. We would be hungry and willing to try things that friends liked. Peer pressure used positively. By the time I retired, lunches weren't the same. No salt, no fat, no flavor. Kids and teachers were sneaking in salt and pepper shakers. We just acted like we didn't see them.

Looks great! I have never had applesauce cobbler. I definitely will give that a try. Someone should open a school cafeteria restaurant. We had the best food when I was a kid. Just like the recipes you talk about. The ladies there were excellent cooks and our cafeteria was so clean every day.

We had the meat, two vegetables, roll, and a desert. It was always delicious and planned with the food groups involved. No frozen pizza with corn was served. Gone are the good old days. .

I love it when you share old memories! It makes me think of my grandma “nanny” and how she would make pear preserves every year. She knew I loved the syrup better than the fruit and she would always make them “extra soupy” just for me. What a joy it was to stand beside her with my hand in her apron pocket looking for a piece of bazooka bubble gum. She didnt have any teeth but she would suck on that bubble gum until it got soft enough for her to gum all the flavor from it.

I know this sounds silly but my grandmother, mom and myself have used three layers for a cobbler, particularly peach. A bottom, middle and a top. The middle…my absolute favorite. P.S. my grandmother was also from Arkansas!

Growing up, my Mom and Dad made the old fashioned custard ice cream and us kids would take turns cranking the ice cream maker until our little arms could not crank any more, then Dad would take over and finish it off. I inherited that old ice cream maker and now make it with my grandkids. My kids enjoyed making it too but they did it with Grandma and Grandpa. It was something fun for them on the weekends, to go to the farm and help grandma and Grandpa with chores and then make ice cream.

My 6 brothers and sisters, and cousins, had the best of times taking turns cranking the old ice cream maker. Homemade angel food cake and ice cream for every birthday and holiday. In later years, parents got an electric machine. Good times.

What a great recipe, Lori. Growing up with my grandparents on a farm and cattle ranch, we made lots of custard ice cream in the summertime. We would get a cantaloupe from the garden, grandpa would cut it open and scoop out flesh with hands and fill the center with the ice cream. Food memories are gold for the soul. I'm from Texas, but born in Arkansas. I have a special place in heart for that place.

Ms. Lori, when I was a kid me and my cousins were cranking homemade ice cream one day, and it was taking forever! My dad, upon checking the ice cream for the third time time, still was not done, saw my cousin get ahold of that crank and just go like crazy, and he noticed that she was left handed, and had been cranking backwards every time she took the crank. Once we got the "right" (handed) people on the job, we finally got to eat the ice cream! Funny!

I really enjoy your stories of your youth and as a school cook. We also loved when our cafeteria staff made cookies, cakes, soups and other goodies. Now we can only eat what is served to the students. Some of our wealthier schools picketed to allow the cafeteria staff to make fresh coffee cake, but most schools had to eat the individually made cakes (not so good). Happy Fourth of July to you!

Ms Lori ,it all looks so good .I feel the need to pour my heart out to you and ask for yalls prayers. Ive been sick for so long I just revoked hospice .However my eyesight is so poor that it would literally take months to write a legible one.I wanted to let you know that about 7 years ago I stumbled across a recipe from a church cook book .I tried it and it changed my life for as long as I was able to continue to cook. I thought I would pass it on. I discovered when making any kind of cream pie, puddings or whatnot to nix all your dry ingredients together in a sauce pan ,then beat your egg yolks into your milk or liquid .Turn your burner om and just slowly whisk your wet into the dry and keep stirring till it's reachs desired thickness. It's absolutely amazing . No lumps or bits of egg.Wishing You,Mr Brown along with all your family a Happy 4th and let none of us ever forget .No matter what our circumstances Our LORD GOD blesses us abundantly every day.❤❤❤❤

My father preferred applesauce pie. Mother nevermade a regular apple pie. Slow hand cranked ice cream churned by Dad was the best!

I had plants come up volunteer of potatoes in my raised beds. I left them go. And some are blooming. I have 2 full beds of them. What ever I get will be a gift. Maybe I can get a crop of green beans when they are done.

My garden started off real good and then it got to be 108 degrees and windy so I lost quite a bit. Shade cloth has helped a lot. Happy 4th . Stay safe.
