Get ready for an unforgettable 4WD adventure!
Let me tell you a tale about an epic journey we embarked upon, conquering the fabled Iron Bridge to Denniston track (also known as the New Creek to Denniston 4WD Track)! This adventure was absolutely fantastic.
Our journey began with a mighty roar as we revved up our engines and set off on the road, which was originally built to service power lines. We encountered a few river crossings along the way, but the most challenging one was the Mackley River. Nevertheless, we managed to navigate across with a slow and steady boulder hop.
As we continued on, the road took us through a series of forested hills and valleys, traversing the mighty Mt William Saddle onto Burnett’s Face. And finally, we arrived at the historic coal mining area of Denniston. The scenery was simply breathtaking!
But wait, there's more!
We decided to spice things up and turned off onto the Confusion Corner track. This took us down to the Waimangaroa River, where we embarked on the infamous Mt Frederick track.
Now, this track was no joke. It is a solid grade 5+ and after driving just 100 meters, my buddy Kurt and I decided it was a bit much. So, we turned around and began the search for a perfect campsite to rest and relax.
And that's how our wild adventure came to a close, folks! If you're ever feeling adventurous, hop in your trusty 4WD and head out to the Iron Bridge to Denniston track. Who knows what epic tales you'll come back with!
I've created posts with more information on the tracks (including downloadable gpx files), general information (permission, history and any interesting facts) to help you with planning your next adventure.

Went through last week. Came back same way. Took the same line as ol mate did on my quad bike, the muffler was bubbling away under the water though!! A big tree fallen half over the track a little way past the crossing, but could squeeze the quad past ok. Other than that, the track is good.

That last ford you drove across with the logs in its base (the one totally consistent thing on that track! 😂) used to have a hut behind it on the shoulder clearing for people that got stuck between flooded creeks/rivers, but DOC in their infinite wisdom……..

Also, it is coal you’re driving past. We used to pick axe a bit out of the cuttings for the camp fire when we were staying in there 😊

G’day mate, I’ve been driving these tracks for 30 years. Be good to have a yarn 🙂 Shot my very first Stag up the Mackley in 1996. Feel free to make contact mate, my knowledge of the tracks (like always cross above the big rock in the Mackley, and if you can’t see the big rock, don’t cross!) was handed down by friends family that have been driving the tracks since they were first formed 😊 NZ heritage brother. Great clip 🤜🏻🤛🏻 ❤🇳🇿🇿🇦❤️
