Great vid! All beginners should watch this, it was very well presented. I've seen my fair share of mistakes out there including not locking the centre diff (overheated). I wish it was around when I owned my MK SWB SD33T Patrol (in late 90s). Well done.

Great info video. The only thing that I would add is, for very low power vehicles like my 86 kw io pajero, 4wd low range is always a must in power sucking soft sand and always select a low gear and keep it in the torque band

Another valuable tip is when going down a steep dune trying to go slow and your truck starts to get sideways do to limiting your speed is to give it some gas scary or not and your truck will get straight. Fighting it getting sideways limiting your speed will get worse and you will roll your truck in the sand sideways on the steep sand. To make it up dunes you need to start up the dune with speed and floor it. With lockers your tires aired down some and a good engine that pushes you into the seat hitting the gas you might make it. When you are reaching the top do not let off the gas peddle or you will almost make it or high center on a sharp peak. Keeping some speed up and not stopping where you are not facing a downward direction is the best. Starting from a stop on a uphill direction is rolling the dice. Don't go for any steeper stuff until you know what your truck can do and get some experience. Sand can surprise you quick and harshly.

Next time you are bogged in the sand like you showed on the beach if you have a bucket get water from the ocean pore it on your tyre tracks and walk along them to compact them don’t forget the sand next to your tyres it doesn’t take much water then just drive out .simple. You don’t need to let your tyres down and you will not need to be pulled out. All you need is access to water . Once you have compacted the tyre tracks you don’t need 4d4 so long as you don’t spin your tyres it doesn’t matter how dry or deep the sand you don’t need as much water as you thing then just walk up and down your tracks . Try it

Hi Brenno looks like you and 4WD Supercentre should get it own TV show. would be like the old days when the shows used to teach people good stuff, after over 50 years of 4WDing I like to help young ones onto the right path and you are doing a good job here mate. I have had all number of 4WD vehicles over the years all the good ones, I am now 75 and have downsize to a 2012 Nissan X Trail 4WD it is a great little vehicle, not many sensible places it won't go, have set up a dual battery behind drivers seat all with Super Centre gear, and we are back into camping. I have never been a fan of letting tires down to much and have never been bogged due to sensible driving and looking before you commit no matter what the track. Everything you said was great info for young beginners and all those rich people with LANDROVER and Autobahn tires who think they can do Fraser :-) Just one really good tip you missed was keep your thumbs out on the rim of the wheel when driving avoids possible breakages to them. Also if your bogged at the back wheels and have no diff lock a small amount of handbrake will get you out most times even two wheel drive ute on a muddy building site Old bloke over and out.

Crazy how much the sand changes location to location or even season to season. I live in the north west USA and used to do beach recoveries for fun in a stock silverado. It was easy, 4hi and dont think we had a front locker. No digging or anything just hook up and pull. It was hard to even get that truck to bog down in 2wd. Drove my lowered open diff rwd bmw out a few times and only got stuck once, got out without help. Driver was the difference, my buddies in awd SUVs needed help.

Often wondered about leaving the gearbox in drive vs manually selecting the gear, which is better for the longevity of the transmission when travelling on soft sand?
@johnwoodrow8769
@johnwoodrow8769 2 жыл бұрын
I can only speak for my old 4 gear automatic Prado. I NEVER drive on the beach in 'D'. Always in 2nd, with just occasionally knocking it into 3rd at dead low tide and the beach wide and flat like a motorway. There is absolutely nothing wrong with manually selecting an appropriate gear in an automatic gearbox and just leaving it there. It's exactly why the function is there, to be used.

Good stuff, two things I would like to add. After you've stopped in sand, back up about a meter. This gives you packed track in front of your vehicle to get started again. My second point is doing a snatch recovery using only one strap, make sure the vehicle being recovered is in a lower gear than the tow vehicle. Can save a lot of damage with inexperienced people. O and one more thing don't do snatch recovery driving backwards. (Look out cv joints).
