New project! Long time coming, lots of work just in planning.
I talk a big game, all "continuous duty" and whatnot... truth is this is my first build on this scale and anything can go wrong at any time :D
I know the audio isn't great... will be better on the next round.

Looks like something that is going to evolutionize linear amplifiers, so that this continuous operation can be achieved by us all in the future. I am wondering how the phasing of the power supplies are going to have to be changed for continuous duty as well to be able to keep up with the voltages this is going to require them to have as well.

most broadcast transmitters use some kind of water Cooling. glad you point out that thermal compound is for testing only .not only does it go bad over time . i does migrate un into pill leads and transformers coils and tuning caps. That thermal compound is re active to RF and de tune the circuit over time. I had a few amps come threw that had gray thermal compound for CPU put under 2879 Etc. and the amp failed over time just because of thermal compound migrated and de tuned circuit . don't forget outher copoints around the pill will heat up as well and the combiners also. 73's

Grate video! Got a question. Are you got to restic the out going flow of the heat sink a little to help with heat transfer... just thinking of my younger day of racing and pulling the thromostat out and having the engine over heat had to install a restricteor to slow the coolant throw the engine and ran much cooler...🤷‍♂️

Wow, even though I got a good reputation distroying LDMOSes , I never tried more than one pill. Used BLF189 in my last touch screen project and is far more resilient than 188. Good luck and waiting next movies. Gabriel yo8rxp

Sharky I wonder if you could use a hot plate and just keep the copper right on that ..

Not sure how much its going to matter but a better way to flow the water through the block is to center feed it and have the outlets on the sides. It balances the temperature across the heat source.

Sharky, with your water cooled design, I think you could use aluminum for the lower half with almost no change in efficiency. Those fins are great. Deep slots in copper, very impressed.

No, you shouldn't mix aluminum and copper together, this induces galvanic corrosion.

Gate thershold voltage or Vgsth is temperature dependant, about -5mV/°C at such a low current, so the only way to know whether the threshold voltage has changed or not, is by keeping the device temperature exactly the same before and after. The LDMOS might have been a bit hotter after soldering, hence lower Vgsth, which does not mean the soldering altered it. Nice watercooler block, however the 1st half will always run colder than the second half, not sure by how much.

Good catch. I realized this a bit after making the video. As for the waterblock, temp diff from one end of the device is negligible. At 1gpm the difference is only a degree or two. I spent a lot of time on CFD simulations to get that water block working so well.

@@MudDuckSharkyso you designed the cooling blocks ??? Good job !!!!!! I would also recommend moving to plastic package, as the thermal resistance is lower, and it is cheaper also. Mrfx1k80n are 20 to 40 dollars cheaper than mrfx1k80h. Regarding the feed choke, what difference do you notice compared to feeding directly through the mid point of the primary coil of the output transformer ??? Good luck on your project.

Invest in a temperature controlled hot plate to install the devices. Heck, even an electric griddle would be better than a blow torch.

i run my amp with 2290's at about 75% output with a overkill cooling fan and for 15 minutes or better. been using same amp for over 10 years. i am a firm believer in running my amps at 75 % or less. think of your car. it can probably run over 100 mph but for how long? if its a radio drive 4 watt amp try running it with 2 watt deadkey but not going over 4 watts. same with multi pill amps that you drive with a smaller amp.

It appears you're not using a grounded workstation or taking any anti-static precautions at all. You can injure those devices... and you're asking for premature failures.

Hi, first let me say then you are doing a great job. Me and one of my friend are looking to built a ldmos amplifier but we need your help with the cooling so Is it possible for you to sale us few waterblock for our cooling system. We are amateur radio operator in Quebec and ready to pay for this waterblock. Thanks! André VA2WR

Ask your builder if your amp is legal or if you might lose your home paying fines or in some country go to prison.
