Use the winch at fast idle speed only, and don't feed your control line back under the fairlead!

Great video again. I do have a soft spot for the Patrols having owned 2 before upgrading to my Land Rover’s. I will go and check out sidetracked again as I have seen it before but I wasn’t interested in a bloody Jeep.

There a great underated bit of kit the Patrols, a bit like the Landy. Well all I can say is Jeep's need love too haha. There a great couple of blokes Mark and Nick, we are keen to do a follow up trip down the track. Cheers Geoff

Constant velosity carb won't work with the oil bath

well the 2.6 liter has constant velocity carby and same air filter, so they must work not too bad. Cheers Geoff

Great to see the series 3 in action. I hope that it will continue to run well for you in the future. Please keep the landy action coming. Was this the first time that the capstan had been officially used in anger?

Cheers, sadly the Series 3 is back in pieces and burning oil once more, on it's thrid engine rebuild now. Yes, it was the first time the capstan has been used in anger, a few further refinements are required. Cheers, Geoff

@@seriouslyseriesaustralia I think Geoff theres supposed to be a specific type of rope thats required for the Capstan winch to work to its best potential. I THINK there was some mention somewhere of yachting type rope

Wet rope slipped and your engine stopped running because of water. What would you say are the disadvantages of such a winch over electric ones? Your preference is obviously clear however if you could go into details on what you would do in order to improve on using rope in wet conditions and the reliance of a running engine to power the winch.

Hi Jim. In short you are stuffed either way, if thew motor stops it therefore stops generating electricity and you only have a limited amount of power to play with. I think what is the real lesson hear is always travel with more than one vehicle , that way you always have a back up plan. A video will be coming out shortly, touching on this subject and situation. Then I look forward to that. The mechanical method of winching is as old as the Land Rovers themselves. It's a interesting topic and so is PTO aspects introduced by Land Rover. My interest on this is profound because my series III needs to be more than just a vehicle I drive about but one that will be geared to power equipment as and when needed.

What's with the capstan winch? Is it damaged, poor technique or or not work well with wet rope?

Several things, a very, I mean very completed bogged Series 3 and No.5 trailer, wet rope, wet drum and possible technique, though I have use the same technique many times. Further investigation required Matt, keep you posted. Kind regards, Geoff

Yes, though it dried out over night and starter first pop the next day. Gotta love a Landy. Cheers Geoff

I think Geoff should be standing on the passenger side of the car with the rope completing the last turn on the drum especially when the rope and drum were wet?

Hi Matt. It is all hard to say, wet drum, wet rope, Series 3 so bogged it graded the bog hole and with the trailer on the back, further refinements required I think. Kind regards, Geoff
