Probably common knowledge for most, but a very important bit is "HOW" to shift into 4 low, which is usually stopped and in neutral to avoid destroying the unicorns and leprechuans that run the transmission and transfer case

TRUE! And/but...also how to change gear when in low box, I recommend slow and deliberate to save syncros.

Canadian here. If you are winter wheeling and in deep snow, use 4H to keep your momentum and maintain "track speed" until you get stuck. Then shift your girl into 4L to back out.

It's great that you are getting into the hobby! Check out the owners manual for how to shift your transfer case. And look for local Jeep and offroading clubs too. I've found most of them to be super helpful people who will encourage you to get into the sport.

3rd low is my favorite gear if its not boggy, i use it to take off and if see a dune I'll drop it and put my right foot to the floor!! Low range is good for your driveline components you're not killing everything. Great vid mate

Another reason I use 4L is it brings the ratios together. So for my 2.8L Patrol it let's me choose a gear to keep it on boost. Quite often I want a gear in between 1st and 2nd or 2nd and 3rd. As in high range it falls off boost. Switching to low range gives me that gear and the torque to get on boost when required. Great vids.

I use 4LOW when in deep sand and when in mountains. For the most part when I'm wheeling, I'm in 4HI. But unlike in your video, when I am on a dirt road with no variations I drive in 2HI. If I need to slow my speed due to lack of traction, then I shift into 4HI. Great video regardless.

Thanks for the video. Very useful tips. I am new in driving 4x4 vehicle. While climbing on a stiff hills (consider moderate road conditions with lots of sharp bends ) which mode is more appropriate ? 4H or 4L or 2H? Please suggest. The vehicle I am talking about has part time 4x4 system with 2H,4H & 4L. with integrated mechanical locking differential. I noticed extra torque is required in this situation. At the same time, steering feedback is also important to prevent under steer or over steer

Hi Ronny, thanks for the video. Quick quesion, is it bad for your vehicle if you drive in low range for extended periods or long distances at once. For example, we did the Holland track the other day and I was in low range for most of the time and was wondering if you would recommend avoiding this type of driving. I drive a 2010 Mitsubishi Challenger manual.Thanks again for your videos, very helpful and enjoyable.Werner

One more reason, if your 4x4 has an automatic gearbox, using low range will result in less torque converter slippage and less heat build up in the auto trans fluid. Even if you have a large fluid cooler the use of low range will keep trans temps lower.

if you have to push start a vehicle on or off road, 4 low not only gives you better pushing force and traction, but as soon as the vehicle starts it will pull away from you, reducing the risk of rear-ending it

May sound stupid, but low range is also cool for parking in very tight places. To get to my garage I have to drive reverse between a fence and a building for about 20 m having sth around 5 cm distance from my mirrors on either side. I always do that on low range to avoid driving the clutch too much.

+Joe if only 2012 shouldn't have any dramas at all even if not used. Sometimes the cogs don't line up so rolling back of forward can help. Also make sure you lift the gear lever as you pass neutral otherwise it won't move.

Please somebody explain what is this range stuff? I mean if you are in 4 L you camt shift a manual to 5th gear? Or something and some cars have L2 And H2 and then 4H wtf isbthat?
@olliehopnoodle4628
@olliehopnoodle4628 4 жыл бұрын
It's hard to do in a comment section, I see you posted a year ago so you may already have found an answer. Even in 4L you can shift a manual into 5th gear. Low range is just another gear that provides a mechanical advantage. You get more torque in low range to the wheels BUT you also limit your available speed. Regarding L2 and H2 and 4H and such. There are a lot of different transfer cases. MOST 4wd trucks will be in 4wd when in low range (there are exceptions). Generally you can split TC's and 4wd into two categories. 'full time' and 'part time'. A transfer case with 'full time' option can be driven on the street with no damage done to the transfer case. A transfer case with a 'part time' option can only be driven in the dirt, sand and other situations where the traction at the tires allows for some slipping.

There are definitely too many people on KZfaq who presume to explain something that they don't really understand. At about the :48 mark it was apparent that Ronny doesn't really have a good understanding of what he is talking about. When talking specifically about transmissions, if you talk about torque but do not make it entirely clear whether you mean engine torque or wheel torque, you are talking gibberish. A lower gear range does obviously allow for greater wheel torque, given that the ratio of wheel torque to engine torque is the same as the ratio of engine speed to wheel speed. However this perspective, that the purpose per se for low range is to give greater wheel torque, has already gone off the rails. The true reason for using low range is so that you won't have to abuse the clutch when you want to have the engine's full power at a vehicle speed that, were you using the normal (high) range, would be too low for the engine to operate within its power band. In a nutshell that is it, and any other way you say it or look at it is only going to give an inferior understanding. When the vehicle speed is going to be too low to permit the engine to operate within its power band when using the normal range, you use the low range instead. People who are only willing to think in terms of torque, and who are never willing to embrace the concept of power, are handicapped in their understanding of this. If you don't give yourself that handicap, it is terribly simple. Twice more, before reaching the 1:11 mark, Ronny repeated that the reason for using low range is to obtain more torque. This was even pasted in text up on the screen, and while it might not be out-and-out wrong to say this, it isn't a coherent rationale for using low range. To say it more directly, this perspective is nonsense. The first example he uses is soft sand. He says that extra torque is needed in soft sand. How would this make any sense at all? He's obviously talking about wheel torque, and as such he ought to say "wheel torque", but it doesn't matter because it does not make a whit of sense to think that you need extra wheel torque in loose sand. The loss of traction in loose sand implies that a lower amount of wheel torque is possible, so how would it make sense to say that you need greater wheel torque in loose sand compared to a normal road surface? It does not make any sense whatsoever. His 4th reason, concerned with "riding the clutch", is correct but this reason is not a separate reason and it is ridiculous to identify this is a separate reason. His 5th reason is using engine compression to slow the vehicle down. This becomes a good reason when you are descending a very long very steep hill where the amount of air flow over the brakes might not be enough to keep the brake from overheating. But when descending itty bitty hills like the ones shown in this video, the only reason for preferring to use engine braking instead of the brakes would be if you wanted for the braking to be applied at the drive wheels, and if the truck is placed in four wheel drive when it is placed in low range, the distribution of braking won't be significantly different from what it is when using the brake, and it will almost certainly be easier to modulate the braking force using the brake instead of the engine. Note also that engine braking is not due to compression per se but rather is due to engine friction. The work a piston performs to compress air on the compression stroke is recovered by the piston on the next stroke, except for the amount that is converted irreversibly to heat through either direct heat dissipation or else the engine friction that accompanies the motion of the piston. The engine braking effect implies that the potential energy of the vehicle at the top of a hill is converted to heat energy on the descent, and by and large this requires friction. At 2:50 I gave up. There's nothing here that is the least bit worth watching.

1995 Toyota 4 runner, 3.0L all stock, and powerless hahahah......when i tow my snowmobiles up any steep hill i have to stop and shift to 4lo then i drive like normal until i max out the speed and get to the highest rpm i could care for. i typically do 4lo in 5th gear at 35mph at around 3500-4000rpms. in 4 hi im constantly changing between 3rd and 2nd gear and don't go faster than 25mpgh and ontop of this when i get to the top of the hill and start to unload the sleds everyone can smell my clutch burning lol. from now on i will only tow heavy equipment up a steep hill in 4lo!
