4yo daughter struggling in wheelchair at Gianetti Park in Carbondale CO May 2015

This is my 4-year-old daughter struggling in her wheelchair to maneuver wood bark chips at Gianetti Park in Carbondale, Colorado in May 2015. I was told this park was ADA and wheelchair accessible. Only one very small area in the park is accessible where there is a mat that leads to a sand digger along with a tic-tack-toe board and broken cog and wheel board. The rest of the park is inaccessible unless you count exhaustive pushing of the wheelchair by an adult (and having to be removed from the chair and placed into a toddler swing).

Just seeing her almost fall out of her chair makes me angry. They need to make all parks wheelchair accessible

"I never seen a wheelchair like that before. Most wheelchairs nearly ALL wheelchairs have at least 2 handles to push. The seatbelt there looks more unsafe than a seatbelt in a car."

Chicken and Ducky Its quite common for paediatric chairs to have just a single handle and it doesn’t affect handling or safety in anyway. A child of this age will require a lot of help from an adult to manoeuvre their chair in unfamiliar and challenging conditions such as this. This little girl is managing remarkably well in the circumstances. She will no doubt learn to do even more as she gets older.

A car type belt would restrict her movement, and the smaller wheelchair often only have one handle, because they are so small and one handle is lighter than to, making it easier for the child to move the chair inderpendantly. I am a full time wheelchair user, and my chair has a super low backrest and no handles, or anti tippers or seatbelt, so its lighter, and easier to move myself. I never ever have someone push me.
