you can actually see a short look of sadness in emet after alisaie talks about their world and how he's destorying it. because he knows how it feels to lose his world but even then he's willing to be the villain of others to bring back his world.

The fact that Emet's mocking words actually makes you feel emotions, is proof of just how well he was developed. That you actually cared for him and now his words stung. Just another proof as to how well written the story is.

Because unlike Lahabrea who’s hostility stems from a sense of superiority over the sundered, and Elidibus’s who’s hostility stems from a sense of duty and righteousness, Emet Selch’s hostility stems from thousands of years of disappointment that festered into bitterness. Like a parental figure who wants their child to succeed, but can’t help but feel saddened and disappointed when that child makes the same mistakes over and over again.

@@J-manli It's not just that, regarding Emet I think. Or at least not for me. What I found compelling about Emet, is the implications when you talk to that shade of the First World with Ardbert next to you. I forget the name of the city, but the first city that Emet replicated at the bottom of the ocean. All of the residents there are just on a recorded loop really, EXCEPT for that one shade that seems way more self-aware than the others. And while I forget the precise words he says, the impression I got, is that he is US, the original being that the WoL, and Ardbert, are fractured pieces of. Which is why Emet had so much hope for you, because in you, he found a piece of his literal best friend. The shade even mentions this is why he suspects Emet gave him more self-awareness than the others. And I suspect the reason is that seeing you, the WoL over so much of the game, made him unconsciously be thinking about his best friend more intently. But here is the neat thing. The echo of his best friend, after hinting that he is you, proceeds to give you insight into Emet, in a way that would help you stop him. And since all of that is a mere reflection of Emet's mind, it's entirely feasible that deep down, Emet really wants to fail. That he no longer really believes in the Rejoining, or think it will actually work. But he can't bring himself to admit it, because he misses his people so much. But that unconscious desire to be stopped, manifests in his best friend (You), telling yourself how to beat him. And thus striking the final nail in the coffin on Emet's plans. Because in the end, when he dies, he doesn't really seem angry. He seems at piece. He is no longer hunched over, under the weight of millennia of scheming. He's free. He just simply asks you to remember them, to remember that their world existed.

One thing to take into consideration - Emet's plan seems horrific to us, sacrificing our reality to replace it with his own. However, that's effectively what we already did - the group that sent the tower and G'raha to the past, and our actions as a result unwrote their own history. They sacrificed not only themselves but everything in their reality in order to replace it with a "better" one, or at least a "better" one from our viewpoint.
@AStrangeWindmill
@AStrangeWindmill 2 жыл бұрын
It's actually the complete opposite of what Emet is trying to do. alpha timeline Cid and the other folks who sent Graha back sacrificed _themselves_ and their reality so that other people in another reality could live. Emet on the other hand is sacrificing another reality so that his can live.
@Reldan
@Reldan 2 жыл бұрын
@@AStrangeWindmill I don't think that absolutely every sentient being in the timeline G'raha came back from was onboard with that plan and were cool with sacrificing themselves. Cid and the others believed that if successful, a version of themselves would continue on in their stead, but a lot of those alive would not even be born in a reality without the calamity happening. In this case G'raha is the one in Emet's role, changing reality to keep his friends alive rather than those who would have lived if he hadn't rewritten history.

Tbf, Emet at that moment was already on the edge of sorrow and sanity. He was truly hoping WoL would success in containing the light (since it was super easy for Azem to do it). So when WoL failed, Emet completely lost all little hopes and little faiths he had and went to do what an ascian do.

Emet was slouched the entire the time in the story as if carrying a great burden. His eyes were also always sad. But at the end, when he was dying his back was straight for the first time since we've seen him and then when he smiled you could also see his eyes seemed to light up. I don't know if it was hope or relief. It was great writing with great attention to detail. "Remember....Remember us....Remember...that we once lived...." What if there's more to this? What if Emet wants us to remember the Aumarot days. I think a major part of EW is about learning about who we were as Azem. The reason he smiled is because Emet knew that you had a rejoining and there was still hope for you. A return of a friend he had lost 12,000 years ago. And guess who's narrating EW.

It's funny, when first hearing Emet-Selch argue his side before the dungeon, most find it pretty hard to argue with his points (I did myself). But after having revisted this cutscene so many times when watching others react to it, I've had so much time to think about it, and it kind of makes me upset that no one brings up the point to Emet-Selch that his people sacrificed their lives SPECIFICALLY to let new life (aka us) arise. For he and his fellow Ascians to then turn around and sacrifice OUR lives to bring them back... does not he not think that's spitting on their sacrifice? That they wouldn't be furious with them? Hell, if I was them, I'd probably turn around and offer THEM up as unwilling sacrifices to bring back those THEY killed. How's that for some poetic fucking justice?
@RoyalKnightish
@RoyalKnightish 2 жыл бұрын
But they didn't specifically sacrifice themselves for new lives (us). They sacrificed themselves to save half of them (and sacrificed half of them again since the world was unlivable for the surviving amaurotians). They intended to harvest the new lives for the offering of Zodiark so he could revive those who have been sacrificed, but some of them like Venat refused hence Hydaelyn. The points is the ancients never sacrificed themselves for us. So, Emet never betrayed their expectations (ironically Venat did)
@KyrialArthian
@KyrialArthian 2 жыл бұрын
@@RoyalKnightish I'll admit, I was thinking of the 2nd sacrifice, and forgetting the first one, so that's my bad. But I always interpreted that second sacrifice as them trying to bring life back to the world, rather than trying to make the world liveable for their remaining brethren. Something like "we survived, we're fine, but everything else is dead or dying... what is the point?" Maybe I'm just seeing them as even more noble than they were, but I saw that as them bringing back nature, not sentient life. And so I also saw their plan to "nurture it and then eventually sacrifice a portion of its vitality to bring back those that were sacrificed" as not involving people, just a portion of nature. Like, plants, animals, etc. Not people. I figured they were treating it similar to how conjurers use their magic. They borrow power from nature to perform magic, but are always careful not to abuse it, to maintain harmony and not upset the balance. I remember them specifically saying they only intended to sacrifice "a portion of its vitality," which to me said they didn't intend to kill anyone or anything, simply borrow some of its power. But again, that's all up to interpretation. Like I said, I could just be seeing them as more noble than they were.
@petriew2018
@petriew2018 2 жыл бұрын
i think that all ties back into a big theme of Shadowbringers, that unquestioning belief in your own cause robs it of it's nobility. Ardbert was a hero, no question. He and his companions championed tirelessly to fight 'darkness', and in the end they technically even won. But they never questioned their cause, never stopped to consider what 'winning' would mean... and it almost destroyed their world Emet's the same kind of misguided hero. He has a cause, one that you could argue is inherently noble, but he's blinded by his own righteousness and it's turned that cause into something ugly and destructive one of the major themes i took away from Shadowbringers is that intentions aren't enough

Emet Selch goes on and on about the great sacrifices made by the ancients...and then conveniently glosses over the fact that he's spent millennia since committing every kind of atrocity possible in service of the singular goal of undoing that sacrifice. Like, it's not noble if you spend the rest of eternity screaming that you want a take-backsies

It is much more grayer than that The comparison of Emet with other sentients in the source or all reflection is like comparing us with our lesser cousins like Chimps and Gorilla. As Emet willingly killed an untold proportion of people in the source and reflections for the sake of his own people, then we would willingly kill chimpz and gorillas for our own loved ones. Is killing a chimpz and gorillas a bad thing?? Yes, since they are closer to us in term of intelligence and altruistic sense. But, would it be really bad to kill them to save our own people ? Most people would assume no.

After accepting his demise, Emet finally acknowledged our worth to some degree. He knew Elidibus wouldn’t be able to continue their great work on his own and that we wouldn’t want to continue the great rejoining either. So as the final wish of a dying man, Emet Selch asked us the remember him because while his loved have physically died, so long as someone remembers them, they’ll continue to live on in some way. To quote Macklemore of all people “…you die twice, the first time is when you’re buried in your grave, and the second time is the last time somebody mentions your name,”
