Daley, I would like to expand on your statements about the Warsaw uprising and provide further clarification and explanations behind certain decisions. First off, the Soviets were coming to the tail end of Operation Bagration, a series of massive encirclements with the purpose of eliminating the operational strength of Army Group Centre. This was a massive success, but they were not far away from their logistics lines and a localised German counter-attack succeeded in pushing them back away from Warsaw. The Soviets also feared that a joint attack from Army Groups North and South/Don could remove all of their progress and encircle the Soviet forces if they got bogged down in street to street fighting, similar to what the Red Army just did to the 6th Army at Stalingrad, and what happened in the Polish-Soviet war 20 years earlier. Second, since the Warsaw uprising's goal was to expel the Germans from the city and establish a Democratic government before the Soviets got there and established a Socialist one, the Polish Home Army did not coordinate, or even inform the Soviets, about the planned uprising. Stalin was not informed about the uprising personally until the 2nd of August, the day after it started. Why would a dictator risk everything to support a democratic uprising, especially when the democratic leaders don't ask him for help in the first place? Third, you mentioned that the Soviets were opposed to the Allies airdropping weapons, supplies and ammunition, which was true. But their are two reasons for this, 1. If the uprising failed, what would happen to those American and British weapons? They would be captured by the Germans and subsequently used against the Soviets, as happened historically. 2. If the uprising succeeded, then now there is an armed regime in Warsaw that has demonstrated that it does not want to cooperate with the Soviets to defeat a common enemy, the Germans, and the possibility that hostilities could break out which would divert forces away from defeating the Germans. Happy to discuss any of my points, and provide evidence. But I will not get involved in any political arguments over this.
