AN: Ville Valo is now VV, for two and a half years he worked on his solo album, on which he himself played all the instruments. The album is released. In a week and a half he will go on tour in Europe and the United States. (Ville entering the building: Good evening) The metal band HIM lit up the world for twenty years after they broke up, but now Ville will start a world tour. Welcome Ville Valo. Ville: A rare and beautiful evening. Good evening. A really long time, it’s been 17 years since you last came here. Ville: just like that, didn’t visit for a moment. Still same patterns, nothing changes, just the hairstyle. Well, certainly more has happened to you in your life than to others. Ville: oh don’t say that. Ups and downs, it's all part of this. That's how it is. You have made a new album. Or let's say, if I claim that Corona was a blessing in this case. Ville: It's up to the listeners to decide, because the corona has been a turn in the sense that he has given me a chance. There was no one around, so I had to learn tricks: I played drums, bass and guitar. Of course, I am also cheap and reliable. (Everyone laughs) It worked that way, but... You mean that for three years people have done like this, and even that, it could have been an impulse at that time that encouraged you to make songs. Ville: Well yes, but I've always been a composer. It doesn't have to be a pandemic, but it certainly changed the way things are done. And yes, then it's up to all of us, they would be absurd black circles. There are other things from other times too, and it's not all that difficult, so yes, something probably comes out of there through melancholy, but I didn't say that I needed a pandemic to make the record. No, that's not what we meant, I just meant that suddenly you have the blessed time to do it. Ville: You have to make time if you don't have it otherwise. Yeah, it was still a conscious decision, so when the bandmate can't do it, you have to play it all yourself. Ville: In a way I'm a fan of Prince and the old Steve Wonder stuff, as well as Andrew from Sisters of Mercy, who is kind of a dictator. This and nothing else, that's what I wanted. I didn’t say it publicly before, but I wanted to check if I'm able to do it. And here is now the evidence. I can't say by myself if it would be better or not… if there was Keppa Kettunen playing the drums. But the end result was that you charted all over the world, number 4 in Germany, in Finland straight to number one on the official album chart and also on billboard genre charts. What does it mean in 2023 for a seasoned musician when you bring up those numbers and lists? Ville: I don't know how to read lists, it was when the stream started, so after that I completely fell off. Earlier we talked about album sales. Ticket sales are important to me. When you see that there are a lot of concerts and the fact that a lot of concerts are sold out. However, I should be rather humble boy, not like it goes without saying (snaps his fingers) that tickets would sell like that fast, and after many years of hiatus that people are interested. They had better things to do than google about me and what’s happening. Well, that's probably true, but was there any pressure to release the album? It has received pretty commendable reviews so far. Ville: There was pressure to bleed the heart, in a way that it really hurts and you feel it. I think it's the only way to do something, not to do it for charts or tours; because maybe it is transmitted through the heart, blood and pain and tears and the spiritual, which is then transmitted through something to the listeners, through which they then want to experience this pain live (laughs) Let's get a little taste of the new pain and melancholy (music videos by VV) With what kind of decision and ideas did you start making this album? VV: Well, maybe because each song is a bit like a solo, I had to find a reason for myself and a justification to exist. Because HIM was a big deal, I grew up or have grown up with these guys since I was a kid and there was much more than music and band, it was my life, after that it felt like starting something immediately would have been very suspicious, so I had to think of something or take a break. Agents fit there very well, doing a one-eighty degree turn and learning the dynamic through Esa and the others, which then pushed Neon Noir as well. This is what I had to ask, what was the impact of Agents when you are the leader of the band? Like the main character, Esa probably plays the guitar a bit differently than it was played in HIM. Ville: You have to remember that Esa is the leader of the Agents. I was “kiltti poju” (well-behaving boy) in the band. So what stayed with you from the Agents? VV: Sensitivity. Esa is big producer, he was recording analog way. Maybe I got from him sort of “kick in the butt”, to dare to do this by myself. It’s that term.. leap to the unknown. You need adrenaline, excitement and even to create more challenges for yourself, otherwise it can be boring.

AN: Have you had HIM's shadow on your neck? Were you thinking, does the album sound too HIM or not? Ville: You mean does it sound too much like me? Should remember that I wrote HIM songs for a long time. I have learned a lot from HIM musicians from the way they played their instruments and without witnessing them recording (our) albums, I would not be able to create this album. No, it is not a shadow. It’s a wonderful thing. I can say I'm pretty proud of years with HIM, it’s good we made decisions without getting at each other’s necks. Let's go back to HIM days VV: ajaj (head down) (HIM music videos) How do you feel watching those old clips? I feel good things. I miss that guy. I’ve been in touch with Mige over the years, the bassist of the band. Lots of love. HIM ended in 2017 and the riders information office says former manager Seppo Vesterinen, now deceased, would have told you to part ways now. Ville: No, Seppo said not to go on tour anymore. Remember we did a farewell tour. I thought it would be a great way to close this opus. He said: “no one wants to see that”. I remember that, it feels like there he had actually some reasons and I really had to fight to challenge Seppo and it all worked out fine. Then he admitted "Well, it turned out pretty good" (imitating Seppo's voice). He had great way of communication. I miss him a lot. Do you still remember what kind of thoughts you had back then in the early nineties, before the record deal, something like let's go and start something? or what kind of thoughts did you have? Ville: Always one step at a time and then we follow like the steps of the idols. There's good and bad and there's a concert and a song and a riff and a hairstyle. It's like the sum of many things and suddenly you realize that 10 years have passed. Oh, that's how it happened. I didn't have enough imagination. Now when you go on tour, it starts in Poland. Ville: That's right, from Warsaw on Valentine's Day. What kind of expectations is the most obvious, well, you've hit hard in sales, what do you feel when you go on tour and it's been a long time since you last showed your face, at least with Agents you didn't go to Europe. Ville: Yes, there was talk of going somewhere, but that's another story. I don’t want to brag in advance. It is true that people have been very interested. There have been a lot of tickets sold, that doesn’t mean they will show up though! We played songs from this solo album on first 3 concerts in Tavastia just a few weeks ago. I was the one who thought of traveling back in time by playing old HIM songs and then these new ones of my own and then there will be new faces in the audience, but there are also often members of the same family from multiple generations. Like a mother and daughter from Ukraine and all kind of fans. Let's add something interesting because I'm sure some of your fans have grown up with you. But then, it says here that those who know how to use ATK can use it and exactly there is hashtag on tiktok for Ville Valo with 45 million views and therefore new fans, apparently with their income. How do you treat social media activities? Ville: The only correct answer to this is; I thought Tiktak was a band. *side eye, everyone laughing * (this is a joke, there was actually Finnish band called Tiktak) That is completely strange way of communication to me. The text message sort of, emojis? hopeless. I made so many errors (with emojis) I refuse to use them. It is the duty of the record company to communicate and publicize and maintain the information of where to be and when and where to buy and what. I don't think it falls within my tasks. I have to be the suffering artist in my coal cellar (hiilikelari). AN: the musician who is rarely seen. Villa: Exactly. AN: to keep that mystery alive. Of course HIM has been as big as it has been. It has been there and you have been there, as a leader. So it's out of the question that you'll perform as HIM again? Ville: Not at all, but not now! There's something good here, good vibes, new angles. The (new) band is wonderful, people are excited. Now it’s not time to dwell on the past, not at all. … We’ll see.. maybe someday; guys are good musicians and why not. Good songs - even if I say so myself (laughs). Yeah.. What kind of work were you doing and therefore what kind of work are you doing with the new band when you rehearsed for the Tavastia concerts? Was there the same procedures as before? That is, the boys get together once a week to rehearse. Ville: Where did you hear those stories? The big boys say. Ville: Okay okay, that's right. I was so stressed about work, for about 2 years at least, I would set everything up and think about what old and new songs would be played, how to put them together and how it would look and there was a lot of work. But this time the bottles were closed and I focused on making music very professionally I tried a lot of different things. We rehearsed intensively for months with production “team”, there were mixers, lighting people among others. Having fun, which is the only real way to slow it down, but I really hope the result comes through then. At least it was refleced in the reviews. There was praise for Tavastia. Now begins a cycle that starts on the 14th and ends at the beginning of May on the east coast of the US. Ville: Approximately What is required of a person and of artists to ride the bus, night after night? Ville: What did it take? Sense of humor. I’m sad I didn’t learn from my dad so called “Churchill power naps”, that’s one minus, something I would love to learn, maybe now it would work. There is very little sleep, that is a bad side. But I don’t want to complain. I didn’t travel for a long time, it's wonderful with new friends and the same old jokes as always. It's fantastic, heaven on earth. AN:We wish you all the luck on your journey and success. VV: Big thanks.

He was just nervous af here. Watch his interviews in english, as calm and relaxed as usual.
