* Chapter 5 Lesson 25 *
* Simple electrical circuit *
Life in the 21st century would be unimaginable without electricity. Whether we are talking about the phone, laptop, tablet, refrigerator, washing machine, microwave or think about the light bulb that shines in the dark, they would all be useless without electricity.
But what is electricity?
heat, electricity is a form of energy. This energy can be used to run electrical appliances.
Electricity can be produced in several ways:
• in hydropower plants, using the extraordinary power of water to set electric generators in motion;
• by burning underground resources - coal, oil, natural gas;
• using the power of the wind, in wind power plants;
• with the help of photovoltaic panels, which use solar energy.
Once produced, the electricity is then transported to our homes or schools, to our parents' workplaces and to all the places where it is used, with the help of electrical wires. It can also be stored in electric batteries.
Electric current can flow along a circuit that has no interruptions. Any electrical circuit must have a source of electrical power. This can be the mains or a battery, called an electric generator. In order for the circuit to be complete, conductors and a consumer are needed.
The simple electrical circuit consists of a battery, wires and light bulb. To work, the conductive wires will be connected to the two terminals of the battery and to the terminals of the bulb.
Did you know that in 1800 an Italian named Alessandro Volta invented the first electric battery, called the electric battery? Volta's battery was a simple source of electric current that allowed scientists to better study electricity and develop new technologies powered by electricity. In 1879, the American Thomas Alva Edison invented the filament bulb, which burned for 40 hours.
Imagine a day in the life of children, 100 years ago, when they had no access to electricity. What activities could they do?
