5 Alabama Rig Gear Tips for Increased Success

From state record bass to countless "personal bests," the Alabama Rig is an undeniable big fish producer. Wired2fish contributor Cody Hahner shares some crucial and often overlooked tackle and gear considerations for optimizing your A-rig for the conditions, be it depth, water clarity, weather, or predominant forage.
TACKLE USED
• ROD - St. Croix Victory Casting Rod, 7'10" Heavy: wired2.fish/VictoryCast
• REEL - Abu Garcia REVO STX Gen 4 Casting Reel, 6.6:1 (Replaces Older Gen): wired2.fish/REVO-STX
• LINE - Seaguar Tatsu Fluorocarbon 15- or 20-pound: wired2.fish/SeaguarTatsuFluoro
• SUNGLASSES - Costa Del Mar Fantail Pro: wired2.fish/FantailPRO
Hahner's 5 A-rig pointers to improve success:
1. Use a beefed-up rod setup. The A-rig is a big, heavy bait with a ton of hardware, so you need to match your rod setup accordingly. Hahner stresses the need for a lengthy heavy-power rod equipped with a long handle. Length and power provide the required strength and leverage for all-day lobbing. Similarly, upsize to a bigger, lower gear ratio reel. A larger spool supports improved casting distance, while a lower gear ratio makes reeling easier.
2. Change line size based on depth and water clarity. Hahner uses lines anywhere between 15- and 20-pound tests. Go lighter when fishing deep or clear water -- the reduced diameter amounts to reduced drag and less visibility for line-shy bass. Go heavier when you can.
3. Choose full bling baits in dirty water or when it's overcast and windy, and go bladeless when things get tough. The extra flash and vibration of willow leaf blades get the nod when there's some churn or color to the water. Sunny, calm, and clear -- Hahner opts for bladeless umbrella rigs.
4. Vary jig head weight based on depth. The A-rig produces best for Hahner when crawling it through the water. As such, he ops for heads lighter than one might expect. His go-to setup for 20 feet of water or deeper is a 1/4-ounce in the middle with two 1/8th ounce heads on the bottom. He fishes 1/8th ounce heads exclusively in less than 20 feet of water.
5. Always rig the biggest and most appealing swimbait in the middle. This center mass strategy helps the bass home in on the center of the bait, which produces the best hooking percentages.

@@Wired2Fish living on the edge throwing it on fluorocarbon unless your throwing it in all open clean clear water with no lay downs or snags around. If not you definitely want that braid to pull an straighten out a hook or two to get your rig back.. but to each is own!! Not hating... If it works, it works!!. Stay safe and tight lines.

Bought an A-rig last year and it hasn't seen the water yet. Maybe bring it along this weekend. There's no easy way to store it without having to bend it back straight every time so I never think to bring it with.

Instead of a 1/4, I use 3/16 and 1/8th's!! In Alabama we can use all 5 hooks I put 3/16 on the bottom 2 and then 1/8 on the top 2 and the middle wire.. been throwing it that way for YEARS. It's a staple down here year round but especially from the middle of the fall into all winter up into pre-spawn! But I've even flipped a-rigs between docks on those stretches of old wooden docks that are all close together. Literally throw it up into the dirt n pop the rod getting it up and the blades spinning fast an then slow rolling it back to the boat. I caught my P.B on my home lake ,(Logan Martin) doin this. Found this technique by accident. The wind was blowing so bad that day and we were going down a stetch of docks, we would pass them, turn the boat an let the wind push us down back last the docks an that's when we flipped the A-rig between the docks getting reaction bits by throwing it up super super shallow an then snapping it up, it was usually on the jerk getting it off the bottom and getting the blades turning when we would get the bites. I caught an 8:14 that day and for Any lake that's a monster but for my lake in particular that's a mega monster. Especially since that lake is over ran with coosa spots. There are plenty of large mouth in the lake but the spots thrive in any weather conditions so it's not that common catching a big head in that cold cold march weather. Cloudy, windy, cold as a witches titty and I discovered a technique that I've never seen any other anglers do except myself and my cousin who was with me that day. We had over 20 pounds that day! Very very special day. Love when that memory comes across my Instagram feed.. 🎣🎣🎣💪💪 stay safe tight lines

What is the advantage of using fluorocarbon line over mono or a co-polymer line?

Why wouldn't you want the two heavier ones on bottom? Seems like that would keep the rig balanced better.

Why do you take the blades off the A-rig. It would be much easier to just buy a second one without blades on it and use it if needed.
