I really enjoyed this video! My fishkeeping started 17 years ago with goldfish. All were purchased as feeders from Walmart and put into a newly installed 200G Pond, kind of as a joke (we had no intention of feeding them to anything). I brought them inside every winter. At one point I had 13 in a 55G - too many. So we started leaving them out year-round and putting a livestock heater into the pond to maintain open water. Today, I have 8 of those original fish and they’re anywhere from 6” to 13” depending on the variety. Three are huge, stunning veil tails. Point being - I’ve had these fish for 17 years, they’re my pets, they know me, and people have to stop thinking of goldfish as disposable. These days I have a couple of reef tanks and this has become my absolute passion. But I still take really good care of those goldfish....❣️

So the common misconceptions I seem to get working in the industry is 1. Fish are low maintenance pets & 2. Fish are useless pets. Now yes they are easy to keep if you know what you're doing.. but a lot of people come to me saying well I don't want the responsibility of taking care of a bird or a reptile so they assume fish are as easy as throwing them into a tank of water & that's it. On another personal level #2 gets to me cause I service a lot of Aquariums in hospitals, elderly homes, children centers & there are a ton of therapeutic uses for having these tanks & being proud of maintaining a little ecosystem. & of course I've heard all the ones you mentioned. Drives me bonked when someone wants to defend their stance on why keeping a goldfish in a bowl is ok.

Not low maintenance, especially not on first set up, but they are easy to care for, if you know what you're doing. I found my 40 gallon fresh water tank much less stressful then I did most of my other pets when I was growing up and I get much more enjoyment out of them, just watching them swim about and do their thing. Sure, you're not interacting with them as much as you would training a budgie or cuddling a pet rat, but it's a different kind of content that comes with watching a tank thriving. Definitely nothing boring about them, as they all have their own personality :)

Thank you for standing up for bettas! I'm in an aquarium group on facebook where some people aggressively defend the 2,5 gallon tank for bettas, though the common recommendation out there today is at least 5 gallon... I don't understand why people won't do the best setup they can for their fish, it's not like the cost or the space needed is much different.

Actually thinking about starting a small 13,5 gallon saltwater tank (Fluval Evo XII), but was so scared about all the people out there saying it is so difficult and expensive. This video made me feel like I can do it! Unfortunately that specific aquarium kit is not available here in Switzerland, so I might have to order it overseas...and then ofcourse having this saltwater tank will become expensive🙄 but anyway great video, love your energy!

Thomas, I watch and subscribe to several fish tubers and even paying members to some. Some channels are more a social time for people who know each other on some way or another. Hardly any talk about fish keeping. I know some question become redundant but I give those people benefit of the doubt because they might be new to the hobby. I don’t mind hearing the same question over and over because I’m might pick up something new. I enjoy your Saturday live stream because you answer every question no matter how easy the answer is to some experienced hobbiest ! I wish more formats were like y’all! You've got the same way of thinking as I do. I'm being an aquarist ever since the 1970's. There are a lot of misconceptions within the aquaristic field. The commercial trade, commercial books and a large number of forums have made a lot of generalizations which ain't all true. And these generalizations have been copied so often that people (and especially novice aquarists) believe it as being true. A big hi from me...

Thank you for good information. I will just add that a 100% water change as an occasional thing, like getting rid of medication isn't more dangerous than a "plop and drop" acclimation as long as the temperature of the old and new water match, but of course, doing a "plop and drop" every week will eventually kill most fish! But I do "plop and drop" in most cases, the only exception is when I buy fish locally and bag it for less than an hour, then I drip acclimate, but I rarely loose any fish regardless of method, the fish is usually dead on arrival inside the bag, or it will survive.

However a fishbowl is appropriate for a fish so long as it’s only in there for a few minutes for temporary transport, like from one tank in the room to another. It’s gonna make them unhappy, like my betta who would make a big deal of not looking at me when I put her in a vase for 30 minutes while moving her tank or moving her between tanks

Im wondering if the filter intake will suck in my baby fish and shrimp and if i can do anything to prevent that. Maybe i could glue a sponge over the bottom and top intake? And the filtration that comes with the filter i got a feeling isn't good, do you know something about that?

It could be a case of you overfeeding your fish and therefore having too many nutrients in the water. You may want to get something like shrimp to help clean up the nutrient column, include more life plants, or if you don't want to do that, maybe try this trick: Leave the lights on for no more than a total of 6-8h a day and make sure to include an interruption in between (say after about two hours or so). Switch the light off for about 1h, then switch it back on again (a timer helps with that). Research has found that it takes algae about 45minutes to continue their photosynthesis cycle. Interrupting it like this reduces the amount of algae that can grow, while your regular tank plants can survive easily a blackout of 2h without intermiten light. Try it for a few weeks and see if it helps you.

Have you heard of the nano hobby? This info is very basic. Fancy goldfish also benefit extremely from almost 90% weekly water changes. This does not shock them unless you are dealing with well water or other circumstances where ph will fluctuate greatly. The acidification of water can be very detrimental to goldfish due to their higher bio load so weekly water changes are essential for good health.
