As many of my generation, I was raised to believe status and material possessions reflected a person's value and ability. The big house, expensive car, designer clothes, etc...proved your success in life as did career progress. It took me decades to shed that false thinking. Now I spend on what I need and want, not what others care about. I am my own affirmation.

OMG! The part about submission is so true! We are saving up to finish our basement and my daughter wanted to go to a local museum that is kind of spendy. I reminded her of our goal and she said, "oh wait! Let's save that money and go another time!" We can afford to go to the museum but it was the lesson of submission and delayed gratification that was so important to learn. Wise words!

I love Rachel’s show because she does not preach to us but provides common sense information we all can relate to. She speaks to me on an emotional level which is perfect because “emotional spending” has been my problem all along. It’s the “need” versus “ want” conversation.

Some years ago I sat down and made a list, clothing, tools, household goods, cars, furniture, watches, experiences, personal development, everything. I then reviewed it every 3 months over a year and red inked the unnecessary and low personal ROI items. Over the years since I have only spent money (bought) anything on the list, if it's not on the list it's not coming home. No brand criteria, everything on basis of quality and timelessness. I now have nothing left on my list and simply stopped spending or buying anything except petrol and food. I already know I need nothing more.

I've been impulse buying thinking I'll get better when it gets here...my husband got me Very sick & it's incurable. So so hard to cope with & have to live with him. A huge mess. But I know the things won't fix me, I'm trying to figure out what to do. Meanwhile I'm slowing down spending & have been decluttering & blessing others with my stuff. I just pray I get better to get part of my life back.

THIS PROGRAM SPOKE TO ME: For me it is PEACE OF MIND to know I am going to be able to retire, keep my condo and be safe into my senior years. My goal is to pay off our condo mortgage and not having Cable TV is not a threat to me because this monthly sacrifice allows me to put extra money onto my mortgage PRINCIPAL instead every month. Putting every stimulus check, every income tax refund and any found money onto our principal is satisfying because it is helping me reach my main goal. Having enough cash to live for a year is my second goal to be able to make it through any kind of economic downturn.

These people are some of the only people that actually give useful self help advice. In the end it all comes down to finances. They helped me get out of debt and I’m not building an emergency fund. It’s done wonders for my mental health. It can be boring content like listening to money advice isn’t really fun or stimulating but ita so helpful. There are a lot of self help books and all that out there. But they talk of whimsical things it doesn’t actually help like the DR crew. EDIT: oh and his friend Joshua Fields Milburn has a team called the Minimalists. They were the leading factor to me getting my life on track. I now wear a uniform, all black everything, own next to nothing all my possessions fit in a backpack and a duffel bag, yes it’s like 50 total possessions excluding kitchenware). Having the mindset of “I don’t need anything but the bare minimum.” You don’t end up wasting money on junk. And trust me when I say it’s all junk. I own a laptop, cellphone, tablet, some more computer stuff and a few musical instruments, and my clothes. It’s hard to get things down to that few, but it’s another level of freedom. If everything went sour (lost my job) tomorrow I could get in my car and run away to another city. I also rent so its easier to run away than if you own but the ultimate goal is freedom. Debt and possessions become things that own YOU instead you owning them. It’s these things that create anxiety and worry because we’re holding onto our possessions like life or death. Then you get your money on track and save big time because you don’t waste money, leading to more freedom. If it wasn’t for The Minimalists and the DR crew, my depression would have probably ended up consuming me to the brink and past that place depression can take someone. When you just can’t stand to be around anymore. Thank you.

I know this isn’t exactly in your wheelhouse per se, but it would be helpful to have some ‘wise’ guidance on ‘giving’. My concern is that I am going to be giving to ‘charities’ or institutions that are actually scamming people at worst or just not good stewards with where they spend/ give it at best. Also, if giving to people more in person that can get tricky too…how to give and not become another persons ‘cash cow’ where they take advantage and keep expecting or coming back as though you’re a bank and then it complicates the relationship. So it’s wonderful to say give ‘radically’ but I want to give ‘wisely’ as well.

Listen to Tony Marin. Take that funeral off your worry list. If you have the other things on the "Baby Steps" in order; the funeral will be covered. Your emergency fund can handle it, or your estate personal representative could sell the car you won't be driving, or whatever. One less thing to worry about is a good thing.

@@cherilynclements3188 I don't know exactly what Dave Ramsey teaches about funeral insurance, but I know this much: I was my mother's Personal Representative (sometimes called a Conservator). She had bought funeral insurance. It was fine that it was paid for, but the money she had given them did not appreciate in value, where as it could have been accumulating increased value if it was invested or even in a savings account. The family would have had more flexibility if it had been savings instead of insurance. That's why I mentioned your emergency fund. Dying sounds like an emergency to me. If you want to direct those funds to burial expenses, I'm thinking that is what a Will is for. My apologies, as I am looking at the first part of your comment, you did not say funeral insurance. That was what the other commenter said. I hope I am being helpful, and good luck. Your heart is clearly in a good place.

Start decluttering all the stuff you don’t use or wear. That should help in not buying more. Set a giving budget. Tithes comes first. Then give regularly to other ministries. And, tipping does help even if the service wasn’t great. Bless others. Hope this helps. These are the steps I took along with budgeting bills, gas and groceries. It brings such peace. Cooking at home, even though it is not my favorite activity, has saved us a bundle. Those drive-thrus add up. Also, we get a personal allowance to spend or save each month. It can increase or decrease as income fluctuates. Just start…you can do it!

We have our checks automatically deposited. Each month we have a set amount that is transferred to our saving’s automatically. We know how much we want to donate each year to certain organizations. We divide that by 12 and each month we automatically transfer that amount to them. That way they know they have that money coming in. At the end of the year if we have extra then we send them more for an added gift.

Rachel and John, this video was so good. I liked hearing the mental, emotional and physical effects of debt, spending, etc. I am 75, raised 3 daughters and one grandson as a single, working mother with no help or child support. 50 years of $ struggle, one child had a TBI at age 5, my grandson had multiple disabilities. So challenges were plentiful and income was modest. Today, I live in a subsidized senior apartment and receive EBT for groceries. My car is paid for, but recently needed $650 in repairs, received medical bills for $300, all in the same week. To top it off, my Amazon account was hacked, for $200. My Discover card is only used for Amazon for cat food, litter and my vitamins. I pay it off every month. I have a second credit card that I use for everything else, gas, non-food items, medical co-pays, etc. I pay this off every month. My SS is deposited into my checking account from which my other bills are auto paid. I also have a modest savings account and overdraft account that I need to draw from occasionally. With these unexpected bills and the fraud bills, I still think I can get through January, but it takes everything. I am frugal, minimal-ish, and careful with my $, I simply don’t shop. I give what I can at my church and volunteer. In addition, the fraud charges were forgiven by Discover and my bank, but Amazon wants me to pay for the fraudulent purchases, they have suspended my Amazon account! You are absolutely right that it causes anxiety, I can’t remember life without anxiety. I watch several KZfaq channels about managing money. At 75 and not in good health, a part time job is not an option. Occasionally I am able to sell some artwork, cash that is not much but helps when I need it. What kind of advice can you give a person like me.

I think you need someone to troubleshoot for you with Amazon. One of your kids or someone from church. We're not meant to do life alone. It's hard to ask for help, but it's valuable. Also, I'd recommend that you switch out your credit cards for debit cards. You might need some help first to get ahead with your cat food and necessities. It would be great if you didn't have to use Amazon. Especially if you pay for prime. That's $140 per year you could keep in your pocket. God bless you!!

No. It is way more expensive. The goal is to have no debt and have money saved for final expenses (called being self insured). When you are younger, have more debt, kids at home you need more insurance. Term fits the bill and doesn’t break the budget. Whole life during that season of life would be like a large car payment and probably not sustainable through the seasons of child rearing, job loses, etc… Commissions are great but not always best for the client.
