Hi David, you have changed my whole outlook on painting...what an inspiration you are. I have thrown away all my detailed art, photos...cheap paints...now I paint with bigger brushes, put on the music...let rip and let it all happen ........a bit scary at first .....where i took weeks of overworking etc etc.....now I have painted the last three paintings and had such wonderful responses..... thanks so much and bless you heaps. Craig

carla Neeleman-Stuifzand there is nothing wrong with using a photo as a reference to create a design composition and value study. My beef is copying photos. There is never a reason for any artist to directly copy a photograph. I’m sure there will be many very hateful comments from “ artists” regarding this point, there always are. Too many people who teach encourage students to copy rather than design. Its very sad.

Very true - and these 5 very basic points are important points to come to a live painting. Each of the points can make a Big difference for the quality and the aliveness of a painting. Another point that I find very important is paint from your heart, be present in the painting process in the way you would honour each living now of a meeting of importance.

Dear David! Thank you for this very helpful video again! I appreciate it a lot! I have a question about mistake #5. I have already heard another opinion on that. A wonderful,amazing Artist got that question about over working an acrylic painting. She said,that she sees no case to over work an acrylic painting. Oils and some other mediums you can over work it,but with acrylics NO! She paints in all the mediums of what I haven't heard of some before and she paints photorealism and surrealism paintings beautifully! Her work is just stunning! And she said, if you are not satisfied with the outcome of your acrylic painting,then it's not finished yet; you need to work at it until you are; cause in acrylics you can glaze and glaze over the parts you are not happy with til you are! Now I am a little confused,dear David! You probably can understand why! What do you think about her opinion on over working an acrylic painting? Or were you just talking about abstrakts in mistake #5? Already thank you,dear David! Be blessed and take care! Lots of Love from me, Manuela, to you dearest David!

Manuela Herr here is what I see happening over and over. Students don’t take the time to really look at a painting to see what it needs, they just paint without seeing. My process is to paint until I think it is almost complete. Then I take time to fully look at, and analyze the painting using my 5 critical design fundamentals of shape, value, color, edges and center of interest. I make a list of corrections needed, then proceed with making the corrections. Most I see just continue to painting with no regard for what is happening on the canvas. They don’t take the time to really look at what they are doing. I do not agree with the other artists views. I believe her view is a classic example of artists overworking their paintings.

Thank you David... great information in this and all of your other videos. I did a painting on watercolor paper and would like to mount it on some type of backing so that I can give it as a gift. Any suggestions?
@davidm.kesslerfineart1717
@davidm.kesslerfineart1717 3 жыл бұрын
You’re welcome Beverly. Cradled wood panels are a good option for mounting paper paintings, however you need to determine that often before you paint bcUse the panels come in standard sizes and the paper size may not match up. Another option is to take it to a framer (not an art store that does framing) and get it mounted on foam ore board, the framed with a simple frame.

Pretty sure artists like Franz Klein, Jackson Pollock typically used house paint on their canvasses. Even Picasso was known to use it. I suppose it depends on what you're trying to achieve. From my own experience cheap paints are definitely a false economy for all the reasons you mentioned. 👍

Lots of Abstract Expressionists used house paint because that’s what was available. They also mixed in kerosene, motor oil and other toxic materials. We have better products today than they did.

I do not understand why you say that I cannot create a painting from a photograph and be so passionate about it. I am disabled, I cannot go out and paint plein air, not possible. I have no other choice but to paint by photograph. And by the way, I am constantly being praised for my artwork. Everyone that I have shown my artwork says that they love my art. All of my artwork is based on photographs that I either took when I was a young man and more mobile or photos from Pixabay or other free sites. I am not an acrylic painter, I use dry media only mostly soft pastels. So explain to me one more time why you are so passionate about no-photo artwork! Please!

Photographs are not paintings, and are not composed as paintings are composed. Anyone can copy of photograph, there is no art to it, simply copying. If you use the photo only as a reference to develop a painting composition (value study) using design fundamentals including shape, line, value, form, etc. then you can develop a painting from the value study. The photo is for reference ONLY in developing a painting design, not for copying. I
