Balantiocheilos Melanopterus...also known as the Bala Shark or the Tri Color Shark is a fish that needs no introduction. We've seen this fish at all of our local fish stores as it is a very popular fish in the aquarium trade. Bala Shark's look incredible and have the potential to become very entertaining and interactive pets, they only ask for a few things in return. In this video I share my experience with my 5 Bala Sharks and what I learned about them over the course of 1 year...they really are amazing fish!

I love your approach to this. Instead of saying what most ppl say "don't get bala sharks, you're not cool just cuz you have bala sharks, they're way harder to take care of" you just say basically, these fish's name is misleading, but it's a cool fish if you can take care of it the right way and do your research. They look beautiful!

10 years ago when I was a child I got a Bala shark with a pleco and angle and blue gourami in a 10gal because the pet store didn’t tell us how big they got. They were all tiny at the time (as small as you can get in the store). As I grew up I learnt they needed bigger tanks and now they are all buddies in a 75gal. The pleco is funnily enough the most aggressive out of everyone. The Bala shark is super chill and will eat out of my hands. He’s not shy but not mean either. Although I do get they like their own kind I have found he’s grown up well with the others since they’ve been together their whole life. He’s super healthy and only problem I ever had was him getting stuck in an ornament (luckily we saw him in time).

I definitely think that 350 is overstocked and filled with tension. Not enough plants or other coverage for the various fish to get away from each other. Not to mention the bioload must be awful. I would really only keep the Balas and a few smaller fish in that tank. With more plant cover and landscape.

Love those 2 huge tanks! Did you say you don’t heat your 2 big tanks? Can I ask how do the tanks stay at 70+ degrees?
@dwsdarius
@dwsdarius 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, yes I don't heat them. The basement temperature stays at 74°F, so the tank stays there as well. The thermostat for my furnace is not in the basement so sometimes the basement temperature drops below the 74°F (my desired temperature setting), and that's why I can't unplug the heaters on my smaller tanks because in the brief time that it takes for the cool temps to reach the thermostat... the small tanks cool down quickly...my 2 larger tanks however have so much water that when the furnace is off for 1 or 2 hours it maintains a constant temperature.

Yes it will essentially help maintain equilibrium with the atmosphere. The one major situation when you should not use one is if you are dosing extra CO2, cuz then you will be gassing off an wasting it lol. Another big benefit of the airstone is to add circulation to any dead spots.

The tank is 96 inches x 36 inches x 24 inches. Long term, this tank would be too small considering the potential full size of these fish. This is not the permanent stocking, eventually the tinfoil barbs will be removed and maybe even the bala sharks to another tank and this tank will be a veija community

@@dwsdarius thanks for replying! Yeah? I was also thinking long term in the sense that the fish you mentioned, do grow considerably in size 😊 good to hear you're already thinking about long term options for their welfare 🙋‍♂️

@@dwsdarius dude. Even right now that tank is way overstocked and causing unnessecary stress on all the fish from the aggression, and lack of cover. You know for a fact that this shouldn't of even been a temporary stocking. It should've just been the Bala, maybe a couple smaller fish, and way more plants and hardscape.

How big is your tank!

I would say 125 is way to small. In sweden the general "smallest considered" is 200 gallons and I agree with that. 90 is way to small, even if the aquarium was wider than standard a fullgrown shark would not be able to turn easily.

do you really look at the amazing water flow on top for hours like you said you could?

Well not hours, but I do stair a lot especially on my 880g because its lower and easier to get comfortable while looking from above. The longest I've stared was about 45min

Hey I want bala sharks, when I buy them they die the same day I acclimate them to the water, they are fine the the bucket and seem happy, but then they go in they stay in the same spot then die, anyone know anything on why

You can keep 3 in a 75g for a few years but as adults they'd need something bigger because they can reach about 12 inches
